³ ‘You must not go! ’^(A) the people pleaded. ‘If we have to flee, they will not pay any attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not pay any attention to us because you are worth^[a] ten thousand of us. Therefore, it is better if you support us from the city.’

³⁶ I will give one tribe^(A) to his son,^(B) so that my servant David will always have a lamp^[a] before me^(C) in Jerusalem, the city I chose for myself to put my name there.^(D)

⁴ But for the sake of David, the Lord his God gave him a lamp^[a] in Jerusalem by raising up his son after him and by preserving Jerusalem.^(A)

⁷ but for the sake of the covenant the Lord had made with David, he was unwilling to destroy the house of David since the Lord had promised^(A) to give a lamp^[a](B) to David and to his sons for ever.
