¹⁷ But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid, struck the Philistine, and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, ‘You must never again go out with us to battle. You must not extinguish the lamp of Israel.’^(A)

³⁶ I will give one tribe^(A) to his son,^(B) so that my servant David will always have a lamp^[a] before me^(C) in Jerusalem, the city I chose for myself to put my name there.^(D)

⁷ but for the sake of the covenant the Lord had made with David, he was unwilling to destroy the house of David since the Lord had promised^(A) to give a lamp^[a](B) to David and to his sons for ever.
