¹⁷ But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid, struck the Philistine, and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, ‘You must never again go out with us to battle. You must not extinguish the lamp of Israel.’^(A)

¹⁴ ‘You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden.^{(A) 15} No one lights a lamp^(B) and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house.^(C)

Ready for the Master’s Return

³⁵ ‘Be ready for service^[a] and have your lamps lit.^(A)

¹⁹ We also have the prophetic word strongly confirmed, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place,^(A) until the day dawns^(B) and the morning star^(C) rises in your hearts.

²³ The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates it, and its lamp is the Lamb.^(A)
