Colossians 2
Disciples’ Literal New Testament

I Am Struggling Greatly For an Increase In Your Assurance And Knowledge of Christ

2 For I want you to know how great a struggle I am having for your sake and the ones in Laodicea, and all-who have not seen my face in the flesh, 2 in order that their hearts might be encouraged— they having been brought-together[a] in love and for[b] all the riches of the full-assurance of understanding, for[c] the full-knowledge of the mystery of God— Christ, 3 in Whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, hidden-away[d]. 4 I am saying this[e] in order that no one may be deluding you with persuasive-argument. 5 For even though I am absent in the flesh, nevertheless I am with you in the spirit, rejoicing and seeing your order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

So Be Walking In Christ And Established In The Faith You Were Taught

6 As then you received Christ Jesus the[f] Lord, be walking in Him— 7 having been rooted, and being built-up in Him, and being established in the[g] faith just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Don’t Be Taken Captive By Human Thinking, Because All God’s Fullness Is In Christ

8 Be watching-out that there will not be anyone taking you captive through philosophy and empty deception according-to[h] the tradition of humans, according to the elemental things[i] of the world, and not according to Christ, 9 because in Him dwells all the fullness of the Deity[j] bodily[k].

You Are Complete In Christ, With Whom You Have Been Buried And Raised Up

10 And in Him you are complete[l], Who is the head of all rule[m] and authority, 11 in Whom you also were circumcised with a circumcision not-done-by-human-hands, in[n] the taking-off [o] of the body[p] of the flesh in the circumcision of [q] Christ— 12 having been buried-with Him in baptism, in which[r] you also were raised-with Him through faith in the working of God, the One having raised Him from the dead.

Indeed, God Made Us Alive With Christ, Having Forgiven All Our Trespasses

13 Indeed, you being dead in the trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh— He made you alive-together with Him, having forgiven us all the trespasses, 14 having wiped-out[s] the written-document[t] against us with[u] its decrees, which was opposed to us. Indeed, He has taken it out of the middle, having nailed it to the cross! 15 Having stripped[v] the rulers and the authorities, He exposed them in public, having celebrated-a-triumph-over[w] them in Him[x]!

Let No One Judge Your Behavior By False Standards

16 Therefore let no one judge you in eating and in drinking, or in respect to a feast or new-moon or Sabbath, 17 which are a shadow of the coming things, but the body[y] is Christ’s. 18 Let no one decide-against you while delighting[z] in humility[aa] and worship of [ab] angels, dwelling-upon[ac] things which he has seen, being puffed-up in-vain by the mind of [ad] his flesh, 19 and not holding-on-to[ae] the head— from Whom the whole body, being supplied[af] and held-together by the joints and ligaments, is growing the growth of [ag] God.

Since You Died With Christ, Do Not Submit To Human Decrees

20 If you died with Christ from[ah] the elemental[ai] things of the world, why, as-though living in the world, do you submit-to-decrees (21 “Do not handle, nor taste, nor touch”; 22 Things which[aj] are all for[ak] perishing[al] in the use[am]!) according-to the commandments and teachings of humans?— 23 which are indeed having the talk[an] of wisdom in-connection-with will-worship[ao] and humility[ap] and harsh-treatment[aq] of the body, not[ar] in-connection-with any [real] value against the indulgence of the flesh.

Christus is God zelf, en de gelovigen zijn één met Hem

2 Ik wil graag dat jullie weten dat ik vurig voor jullie bid. En niet alleen voor jullie, maar ook voor de gelovigen in Laodicea en voor alle andere mensen die mij nooit ontmoet hebben. 2 Want ik wil dat ze bemoedigd zullen worden. En ik wil graag dat ze één zullen zijn door van elkaar te houden. Alleen dán zullen ze ten volle kunnen genieten van het kennen van Christus. Christus is het verborgen plan van God. 3 Alle schatten van wijsheid en kennis zijn in Hem verborgen. 4 Ik zeg jullie dit, zodat jullie je door niemand met mooie praatjes en leugens laten bedriegen.

5 Ik ben zelf wel niet bij jullie, maar mijn geest is wél bij jullie. En ik zie met plezier hoe het bij jullie toegaat. Want jullie zijn ordelijk, jullie zijn één in jullie geloof en jullie hebben een sterk geloof in Christus. 6 Nu jullie Jezus Christus als Heer hebben aangenomen, moeten jullie ook in Hem leven. 7 Net zoals een boom met zijn wortels stevig in de grond staat, zo moeten jullie stevig in Hem geworteld staan. Dan zullen jullie in Hem opgebouwd worden. En jullie zullen stevig blijven staan in het geloof dat we jullie geleerd hebben. Wees ook dankbaar.

8 Let er op dat jullie je niet laten bedriegen door de zogenaamde wijsheid en mooie praatjes van andere mensen. Want hun ideeën zijn menselijke ideeën. Het zijn de gedachten van deze wereld. Niet die van Christus. 9 In de mens Jezus woont God Zelf. 10 En als jullie één zijn met Christus, woont God Zelf ook in júllie. Christus is het Hoofd van alles wat heerst en macht heeft.

Het nieuwe leven met Christus

11 In Hem zijn jullie ook besneden,[a] maar niet in je lichaam, door mensen. Nee, jullie zijn besneden doordat jullie je 'oude ik'[b] hebben uitgetrokken, dankzij Christus. 12 Dat gebeurde bij jullie doop. Toen zijn jullie samen met Christus gestorven en begraven. Maar jullie zijn ook samen met Hem weer als nieuwe mensen uit de dood opgestaan. Dat gebeurde doordat jullie geloven in de kracht van God. Zijn kracht heeft eerst Christus uit de dood teruggeroepen en weer levend gemaakt. En daarna jullie. 13 Eerst waren jullie geestelijk dood. Dat kwam doordat jullie ongehoorzaam aan God waren en niet bij zijn volk hoorden. Maar nu heeft Hij jullie samen met Christus geestelijk levend gemaakt, toen Hij al jullie schuld vergaf. 14 Hoe vergaf Hij onze schuld? Door het bewijsmateriaal uit te wissen! Hij heeft namelijk de wet van Mozes, die bewees dat we schuldig waren, aan het kruis gespijkerd. 15 We waren ongehoorzaam doordat het kwaad macht over ons had. Maar nu heeft Hij aan het kruis het kwaad ontwapend, overwonnen en voor iedereen te kijk gezet.

Geen regels, maar gehoorzaamheid aan Jezus

16 Laat je dus door niemand nog regels opleggen over wat jullie wel of niet mogen eten en drinken, of welke feestdagen jullie moeten vieren.[c] 17 Want die dingen zijn een afbeelding en een schaduw van de werkelijke dingen die nog zouden komen in Christus. 18 Er zijn mensen die vinden dat de engelen aanbeden moeten worden.[d] Ze zijn overdreven nederig en proberen van alles in de geestelijke wereld te zien. Ze zeggen dat jullie niet gered zijn als jullie niet hetzelfde doen als zij. Maar laat je niets wijsmaken! Want die mensen hebben gewoon een heleboel verbeelding en zijn trots. 19 Maar ze zijn helemaal niet gehoorzaam aan het Hoofd: Jezus. Maar het hoofd is juist het belangrijkste van elk lichaam. Want het lichaam wordt wel door pezen en banden ondersteund en bij elkaar gehouden, maar alleen dankzij het hoofd kan het groeien zoals God het wil.

20 Jullie zijn met Christus gestorven. Daarom heeft de wereldse manier van denken geen macht meer over jullie. Waarom laten jullie je dan toch nog allerlei regels opleggen? Jullie horen toch niet meer bij deze wereld? 21 De mensen komen met allerlei regels. "Dat mag je niet aanraken." "Dat mag je niet eten." "Daar mag je niet aankomen." 22 Maar al die regels zullen in de loop van de tijd weer verdwijnen. Zo gaat dat nu eenmaal met wetten en regels van mensen. 23 Het klinkt allemaal wel erg wijs en mooi, maar toch is het een zelfbedachte godsdienst. Het heeft helemaal geen zin om overdreven nederig te zijn en om hard te zijn voor je eigen lichaam.[e] Mensen die daarmee bezig zijn, willen alleen maar laten zien hoe geweldig godsdienstig ze zijn.

  1. Colossenzen 2:11 Lees Genesis 17:9-13. Alle Joodse mannen moesten hun geslachtsdeel laten besnijden. Dat was het teken van het verbond van God met het Joodse volk.
  2. Colossenzen 2:11 Met het 'oude ik' wordt onze eigen menselijke aard bedoeld. Het wordt in de meeste vertalingen 'vlees' genoemd. In onszelf, als mens, is niets goeds. Maar doordat Gods Geest in ons is komen wonen, is dat veranderd. We zijn opnieuw geboren (lees Johannes 1:12). We zijn nieuwe mensen geworden (lees Romeinen 6:4). Onze oude menselijke aard bestaat nog wel, maar is geen slaaf meer van het kwaad. We hebben de mogelijkheid gekregen om 'nee' te zeggen tegen het kwaad (lees Romeinen 6:6).
  3. Colossenzen 2:16 De Joodse christenen vonden dat de niet-Joodse christenen het niet goed deden. De Joodse christenen vonden dat de niet-Joodse christenen zich aan de Joodse regels moesten houden over wat ze wel en niet mochten eten, en dat ze de Joodse feesten moesten vieren. Ook andere mensen wilden graag allerlei regels maken voor de gelovigen. Maar Paulus legt hierna uit dat het niet gaat om regels, maar om gehoorzaamheid aan Jezus.
  4. Colossenzen 2:18 De vertaling "Het Leven" zegt hierover dat in die tijd sommige mensen dachten dat je alleen dan bij God kon komen.
  5. Colossenzen 2:23 Er waren bijvoorbeeld mensen die hun eigen rug stuksloegen met een zweep, omdat ze dachten dat alleen dán God hun vergeving zou willen geven.
