²⁴ The Lord commanded us to follow all these statutes and to fear the Lord our God for our prosperity always and for our preservation, as it is today.

²⁶ ‘What is written in the law? ’ he asked him. ‘How do you read it? ’

²⁷ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God^(A) with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’^(B) and ‘your neighbour as yourself.’^[a](C)

²⁸ ‘You’ve answered correctly,’ he told him. ‘Do this and you will live.’^(D)

¹⁰ and I died. The commandment that was meant for life^(A) resulted in death for me.
