Everyone Dies
9 I thought about all these things. I realized that those who are wise and do what is right are under God’s control. What they do is also under his control. But no one knows whether they will be loved or hated. 2 Everyone will die someday. Death comes to godly and sinful people alike. It comes to good and bad people alike. It comes to “clean” and “unclean” people alike. Those who offer sacrifices and those who don’t offer them also die.
A good person dies,
and so does a sinner.
Those who make promises die.
So do those who are afraid to make them.
3 Here’s what is so bad about everything that happens on this earth. Death catches up with all of us. Also, the hearts of people are full of evil. They live in foolish pleasure. After that, they join those who have already died. 4 Anyone who is still living has hope. Even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!
5 People who are still alive know they’ll die.
But those who have died don’t know anything.
They don’t receive any more rewards.
And even their name is forgotten.
6 Their love, hate and jealousy disappear.
They will never share again
in anything that happens on earth.
7 Go and enjoy your food. Be joyful as you drink your wine. God has already approved what you do. 8 Always wear white clothes to show you are happy. Anoint your head with olive oil. 9 You love your wife. So enjoy life with her. Do it all the days of this meaningless life God has given you on earth. That’s what he made you for. That’s what you get for all your hard work on earth. 10 No matter what you do, work at it with all your might. Remember, you are going to the place of the dead. And there isn’t any work or planning or knowledge or wisdom there.
11 Here’s something else I’ve seen on this earth.
Races aren’t always won by those who run fast.
Battles aren’t always won by those who are strong.
Wise people don’t always have plenty of food.
Clever people aren’t always wealthy.
Those who have learned a lot aren’t always successful.
God controls the timing of every event.
He also controls how things turn out.
12 No one knows when trouble will come to them.
Fish are caught in nets.
Birds are taken in traps.
And people are trapped by hard times
that come when they don’t expect them.
Being Wise Is Better Than Being Foolish
13 Here’s something else I saw on this earth. I saw an example of wisdom that touched me deeply. 14 There was once a small city. Only a few people lived there. A powerful king attacked it. He brought in war machines all around it. 15 A certain man lived in that city. He was poor but wise. He used his wisdom to save the city. But no one remembered that poor man. 16 So I said, “It’s better to be wise than to be powerful.” But people look down on the poor man’s wisdom. No one pays any attention to what he says.
17 People should listen to the quiet words
of those who are wise.
That’s better than paying attention to the shouts
of a ruler of foolish people.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war.
But one sinner destroys a lot of good.

La sorte
9 Infatti ho riflettuto su tutto questo e ho compreso che i giusti e i saggi e le loro azioni sono nelle mani di Dio.
L'uomo non conosce né l'amore né l'odio; davanti a lui tutto è vanità.
2 Vi è una sorte unica per tutti,
per il giusto e l'empio,
per il puro e l'impuro,
per chi offre sacrifici e per chi non li offre,
per il buono e per il malvagio,
per chi giura e per chi teme di giurare.
3 Questo è il male in tutto ciò che avviene sotto il sole: una medesima sorte tocca a tutti e anche il cuore degli uomini è pieno di male e la stoltezza alberga nel loro cuore mentre sono in vita, poi se ne vanno fra i morti. 4 Certo, finché si resta uniti alla società dei viventi c'è speranza: meglio un cane vivo che un leone morto. 5 I vivi sanno che moriranno, ma i morti non sanno nulla; non c'è più salario per loro, perché il loro ricordo svanisce. 6 Il loro amore, il loro odio e la loro invidia, tutto è ormai finito, non avranno più alcuna parte in tutto ciò che accade sotto il sole.
7 Và, mangia con gioia il tuo pane,
bevi il tuo vino con cuore lieto,
perché Dio ha gia gradito le tue opere.
8 In ogni tempo le tue vesti siano bianche
e il profumo non manchi sul tuo capo.
9 Godi la vita con la sposa che ami per tutti i giorni della tua vita fugace, che Dio ti concede sotto il sole, perché questa è la tua sorte nella vita e nelle pene che soffri sotto il sole. 10 Tutto ciò che trovi da fare, fallo finché ne sei in grado, perché non ci sarà né attività, né ragione, né scienza, né sapienza giù negli inferi, dove stai per andare.
11 Ho visto anche sotto il sole che non è degli agili la corsa, né dei forti la guerra e neppure dei sapienti il pane e degli accorti la ricchezza e nemmeno degli intelligenti il favore, perché il tempo e il caso raggiungono tutti. 12 Infatti l'uomo non conosce neppure la sua ora: simile ai pesci che sono presi dalla rete fatale e agli uccelli presi al laccio, l'uomo è sorpreso dalla sventura che improvvisa si abbatte su di lui.
Saggezza e follia
13 Anche questo fatto ho visto sotto il sole e mi parve assai grave: 14 c'era una piccola città con pochi abitanti. Un gran re si mosse contro di essa, l'assediò e vi costruì contro grandi bastioni. 15 Si trovava però in essa un uomo povero ma saggio, il quale con la sua sapienza salvò la città; eppure nessuno si ricordò di quest'uomo povero. 16 E io dico:
E' meglio la sapienza della forza,
ma la sapienza del povero è disprezzata
e le sue parole non sono ascoltate.
17 Le parole calme dei saggi si ascoltano
più delle grida di chi domina fra i pazzi.
18 Meglio la sapienza che le armi da guerra,
ma uno sbaglio solo annienta un gran bene.

A Common Destiny for All
9 So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them.(A) 2 All share a common destiny—the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,[a] the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not.
As it is with the good,
so with the sinful;
as it is with those who take oaths,
so with those who are afraid to take them.(B)
3 This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all.(C) The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live,(D) and afterward they join the dead.(E) 4 Anyone who is among the living has hope[b]—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!
5 For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;(F)
they have no further reward,
and even their name(G) is forgotten.(H)
6 Their love, their hate
and their jealousy have long since vanished;
never again will they have a part
in anything that happens under the sun.(I)
7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine(J) with a joyful heart,(K) for God has already approved what you do. 8 Always be clothed in white,(L) and always anoint your head with oil. 9 Enjoy life with your wife,(M) whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot(N) in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever(O) your hand finds to do, do it with all your might,(P) for in the realm of the dead,(Q) where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.(R)
11 I have seen something else under the sun:
The race is not to the swift
or the battle to the strong,(S)
nor does food come to the wise(T)
or wealth to the brilliant
or favor to the learned;
but time and chance(U) happen to them all.(V)
12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:
As fish are caught in a cruel net,
or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times(W)
that fall unexpectedly upon them.(X)
Wisdom Better Than Folly
13 I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom(Y) that greatly impressed me: 14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man.(Z) 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.(AA)
17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded
than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
18 Wisdom(AB) is better than weapons of war,
but one sinner destroys much good.
