¹⁵ ‘Do not make a treaty with the inhabitants of the land, or else when they prostitute themselves with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices.^{(A) 16} Then you will take some of their daughters as brides for your sons. Their daughters will prostitute themselves with their gods and cause your sons to prostitute themselves with their gods.^(B)

⁸ Let us not commit sexual immorality^(A) as some of them did,^[a] and in a single day twenty-three thousand people died.^(B)

¹⁴ But I have a few things against you. You have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam,^(A) who taught Balak to place a stumbling block^[a] in front of the Israelites: to eat meat sacrificed to idols^(B) and to commit sexual immorality.^(C)
