Genesis 24:28-60
Legacy Standard Bible
28 Then (A)the young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things. 29 Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was (B)Laban; and Laban ran outside to the man at the spring. 30 Now it happened, when he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s [a]wrists, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “[b]This is what the man said to me,” he came out to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 And he said, “(C)Come in, (D)blessed of Yahweh! Why do you stand outside since (E)I have prepared the house and a place for the camels?” 32 So the man came into the house. Then [c](F)Laban unloaded the camels, and he gave straw and feed to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Then food was set before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat until I have spoken my words.” And he said, “Speak!” 34 So he said, “I am (G)Abraham’s servant. 35 And Yahweh has greatly (H)blessed my master, so he has become great; and He has given him (I)flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and male slaves and female slaves, and camels and donkeys. 36 Now (J)Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master [d]in her old age, and (K)he has given him all that he has. 37 (L)And my master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I [e]live; 38 but you shall go to my father’s house and to my family, and take a wife for my son.’ 39 (M)Then I said to my master, ‘Suppose the woman does not follow me.’ 40 And he said to me, ‘(N)Yahweh, before whom I have (O)walked, will send (P)His angel with you and will make your journey successful, and you will take a wife for my son from my family and from my father’s house. 41 (Q)Then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my relatives. Now if they do not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’
42 “So (R)I came today to the spring and said, ‘O Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, if now You will make my journey on which I go (S)successful; 43 behold, (T)I am standing by the spring of water, and may it be that the [f]maiden who comes out to draw, and to whom I say, “(U)Please let me drink a little water from your jar”; 44 and she will say to me, “You drink, and I will draw for your camels also”; she is the woman whom Yahweh has decided upon for my master’s son.’
45 “Before I had finished (V)speaking in my heart, behold, (W)Rebekah was coming out with her jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew, and (X)I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’ 46 Then she hurried and lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘(Y)Drink, and I will also give water to your camels to drink’; so I drank, and she also gave water to the camels to drink. 47 (Z)Then I asked her and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him’; and I put the (AA)ring on her nose and the bracelets on her [g]wrists. 48 And I (AB)bowed low and worshiped Yahweh; and I blessed Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, (AC)who had guided me in the true way to take the daughter of my master’s [h]relative for his son. 49 So now if you are going to (AD)show lovingkindness and truth with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right or to the left.”
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “(AE)The matter comes from Yahweh; (AF)so we cannot speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as Yahweh has spoken.”
52 Now it happened that when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he (AG)bowed himself to the ground [i]before Yahweh. 53 The servant brought out (AH)articles of silver and articles of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother. 54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night. And then they arose in the morning, and he said, “(AI)Send me away to my master.” 55 But her brother and her mother said, “(AJ)Let the young woman stay with us a few days, or even ten; afterward she will go.” 56 And he said to them, “Do not delay me, since (AK)Yahweh has made my way successful. Send me away that I may go to my master.” 57 And they said, “We will call the young woman and ask about [j]her wishes.” 58 Then they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.” 59 Thus they sent away their sister Rebekah and (AL)her nurse with Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,
“May you, our sister,
(AM)Become thousands of ten thousands,
And may (AN)your seed possess
The gate of those who hate him.”
