The Lord Will Punish the World

24 ·Look [T Behold]! The Lord will destroy the earth and ·leave it empty [lay it waste];
    he will ·ruin [mar; distort] the surface of the land and scatter its ·people [inhabitants].
·At that time the same thing will happen to everyone [L It will be]:
    ·to common people and priests [L like people, like priest],
    ·to slaves and masters [L like servant/slave, like master/lord],
    ·to women slaves and their women masters [L like maidservant, like mistress/queen],
    ·to sellers and buyers [L like seller, like buyer],
    ·to those who lend and those who borrow [L like lender, like borrower],
    ·to bankers and those who owe the bank [L like creditor, like debtor].
The earth will be ·completely empty [devastated; laid waste].
    The wealth ·will all be taken [plundered],
    because the Lord has ·commanded it [spoken this word].
The earth will ·dry up [or mourn] and ·die [wither];
    the world will ·grow weak [languish] and ·die [wither];
    the ·great leaders [or heavens; heights; L highest ones] ·in this land [or of the earth] will ·become weak [languish].
The people of the earth have ·ruined [defiled] it,
    because they ·do not follow [have violated/transgressed] ·God’s teachings [the laws/instruction; L Torah]
or obey ·God’s laws [statutes; regulations]
    or keep ·their agreement with God that was to last forever [the eternal covenant/treaty].
So a curse [Deut. 28] will ·destroy [consume; devour] the earth.
    The people of the world ·are guilty [must pay for their guilt],
so ·they [L the earth’s inhabitants] will be burned up;
    only a few will be left.
The new wine ·will be bad [dries up; or mourns], and the grapevines will ·die [wither; or languish].
    ·People who were happy [Revelers; Merrymakers] will ·be sad [groan; sigh].
The ·happy music [joy; mirth] of the tambourines will end.
    The happy sounds of ·wild parties [revelry] will stop.
    The joyful music from the harps will ·end [cease].
People will no longer sing while they drink their wine.
    The ·beer [T strong drink; C alcoholic beverage made from grain] will taste bitter to those who drink it.
10 The ruined city ·will be empty [is desolate/broken],
    ·and people will hide behind closed doors [L every house is shuttered to prevent entering].
11 People in the streets will ·ask [cry out; howl] for wine,
    but joy will have turned to ·sadness [gloom; darkness];
    all the ·happiness [gladness; rejoicing] ·will have left [is banished/exiled].
12 The city will be left in ruins,
    and its gates will be smashed to pieces.
13 This is what will happen all over the earth
    and to all the nations.
The earth will be like an olive tree ·after the harvest [L when it is beaten; 17:6]
    or like the ·few grapes left on a vine [L gleanings] after harvest.

14 The people raise their voices and shout for joy.
    From the ·west [L sea] they ·praise the greatness [shout/cry out for the majesty] of the Lord.
15 [L Therefore] People in the ·east [or morning light; dawn], ·praise [extol; give glory to] the Lord.
    People in the ·islands [or coastlands] of the sea,
    ·praise [extol; give glory to] the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.
16 We hear songs from ·every part [the ends/edge] of the earth
    ·praising God, [or “Glory to…”] the Righteous One.

But I said, “I am ·dying [wasting away]! I am ·dying [wasting away]!
    ·How terrible it will be for [Woe to] me!
·Traitors turn against people [L Betrayers betray; 21:2];
    ·with their dishonesty, they turn against people [L Betrayers betray with betrayal].”
17 There are terrors, ·holes [pits], and ·traps [snares]
    for the ·people [inhabitants] of the earth.
18 Anyone who tries to ·escape [flee] from the sound of terror
    will fall into a ·hole [pit].
Anyone who climbs out of the ·hole [pit]
    will be caught in a ·trap [snare].
The ·clouds in the sky will pour out rain [L the floodgates/windows of the heights are opened],
    and the foundations of the earth will shake.
19 The earth will be ·broken up [shattered];
    the earth will split open;
    the earth will shake violently.
20 The earth will ·stumble [stagger; reel] around like someone who is drunk;
    it will shake like a ·hut in a storm [L hut].
Its ·sin [transgression; rebellion] is ·like a heavy weight on its back [L heavy upon it];
    it will fall and never rise again.

21 ·At that time [L In that day] the Lord will punish
    the ·powers [armies; hosts] in the ·sky [or heavens; L heights] above
    and the ·rulers [kings] on earth below.
22 They will be gathered together
    like prisoners ·thrown into a dungeon [in a pit/cistern];
they will be shut up in prison.
    After ·much time [many days] they will be punished.
23 The moon will be ·embarrassed [confounded; dismayed; disgraced; or covered up],
    and the sun will be ·ashamed [or darkened; C these great lights will pale in comparison to the Lord’s glory],
because the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] will rule as king
    on Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
·Jerusalem’s leaders will see his greatness [L …and gloriously before its elders].

A Song of Praise to God

25 Lord, you are my God.
    I ·honor [exalt] you and praise ·you [L your name],
because you have done ·amazing [wonderful] things.
    ·You have done what you planned long ago [Your plans were made long ago];
    ·you have always done what you said you would do [they are faithful and trustworthy];
You have made the city a ·pile of rocks [L heap]
    ·and have destroyed her walls [L the fortified city into a ruin].
The ·city our enemies built with strong walls [or foreigners’ fortress] is gone;
    it will never be built again.
People from powerful nations will ·honor [glorify] you;
    ·cruel people from strong cities [L cities of cruel/ruthless people] will fear you.
You ·protect [L are a refuge/stronghold to] the poor;
    you protect the ·helpless [needy] when they are in ·danger [distress].
You are like a shelter from storms,
    like shade that protects them from the heat.
The ·cruel people attack [L breath of the cruel/ruthless]
    like a rainstorm beating against the wall,
    like the ·heat [or drought] in the desert.
But you, God, ·stop their violent attack [L subdue/silence the uproar of foreigners].
    As the shadow from a cloud cools a hot day,
you silence the songs of ·those who have no mercy [the ruthless].

God’s Banquet for His Servants

The Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] will prepare a feast
    on this mountain [C Mount Zion; 24:23] for all people.
It will be a feast with all the best food and wine,
    the ·finest [tenderest; full of marrow] meat and ·wine [well-aged/filtered wines].
On this mountain God will ·destroy [swallow]
    the ·veil [shroud; covering] that covers all nations,
the ·veil [sheet] that stretches over all peoples [C death];
    he will ·destroy [swallow up] death forever [1 Cor. 15:54].
The Lord God will wipe away every tear from every face [Rev. 7:17; 21:4].
    He will take away the ·shame [disgrace] of his people from the earth.
The Lord has spoken.

·At that time [L In that day] people will say,
    “·Our God is doing this [L Look/T Behold, this is our God]!
We have waited for him, and he has come to save us.
    This is the Lord. We waited for him,
·so we will [let us] rejoice and ·be happy [be glad; celebrate] ·when he saves us [L in his salvation].”
10 The ·Lord will protect Jerusalem [L hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain],
    ·but he will crush our enemy Moab [L Moab will be trampled under him]
like straw that is trampled down in the manure.
11 They [L He; C Moab] will spread their arms in it
    like a person who is swimming.
But God will bring down their pride,
    ·and all the clever things they have made will mean nothing [L together with the trickery of their hands].
12 He will ·destroy [bring down] ·Moab’s [L your] high, fortified walls,
    ·leveling them to the ground [laying them low].
He will throw them down to the ground,
    even to the dust.

A Song of Praise to God

26 ·At that time [L In that day] this song will be sung in Judah:

We have a strong city.
    ·God protects us with [L His salvation/deliverance is] its strong walls and defenses.
Open the gates,
    and the ·good people [righteous nation] will enter,
    those who ·follow God [remain faithful].
You, Lord, ·give [preserve/keep in] ·true peace [complete peace; L peace, peace]
    ·to those who depend on you [T whose mind is stayed on you; L whose purpose is firm],
    because they trust you.
So, trust the Lord always,
    because ·he [L in Yah, the Lord/Yahweh; C Yah is a shorter version of Yahweh] is our ·Rock forever [eternal rock].
He will ·destroy [humble; bring down] ·the people of that proud city [L those who dwell on a high place],
He will bring that ·high [lofty; arrogant] city down to the ground
    and throw it down into the dust.
·Then those who were hurt by the city will walk on its ruins [L The foot tramples it down, the feet of the oppressed];
    ·those who were made poor by the city will trample it under their feet [L the footsteps of the poor (will trample it)].

The ·path [way] of life is level for ·those who are right with God [the righteous];
    ·Lord [or Upright One], you make the way of life ·smooth [straight; level] for those people.
But, Lord, we are waiting
    ·for your [or in the] ·way of justice [or path/way of your judgments].
Our souls ·want to remember [or desire; or wish to see glorified]
    ·you [your renown; your remembrance] and your name.
My soul ·wants to be with [longs/yearns for] you at night,
    and my spirit ·wants to be with [seeks; longs for] you ·at the dawn of every day [in the morning].
When your ·way of justice [judgment] comes to the ·land [earth],
    ·people [the inhabitants] of the world will learn ·the right way of living [righteousness; justice].
10 Evil people will not learn ·to do good [righteousness; justice]
    even if you show them ·kindness [mercy; grace].
They will continue ·doing evil [acting unjustly], even if they live in a ·good world [land of uprightness];
    they never see the Lord’s ·greatness [majesty].
11 Lord, ·you are ready to punish those people [L your hand is lifted up; C ready to strike],
    but they do not see that.
·Show them your strong love for your people [L They will see your zeal for your people; or They will see your zealous judgment against mankind].
    ·Then those who are evil [L …and they] will be ashamed.
·Burn [Consume] them in the fire
    ·you have prepared for [L of] your ·enemies [adversaries].
12 Lord, all our ·success is [accomplishments/works are] because of what you have done,
    ·so give us peace [or and you give us peace/security].
13 Lord, our God, other masters besides you have ruled us,
    but we ·honor [praise; remember] only ·you [L your name].
14 ·Those masters are now dead [L They are dead, never to live];
    their ·ghosts [spirits] will not rise from death.
You punished and destroyed them
    and erased any memory of them.
15 Lord, you ·multiplied the number of your people [enlarged/made great the nation];
    you ·multiplied them [enlarged/made great the nation] and brought ·honor [glory] to yourself.
You ·widened [enlarged; extended] the borders of the land.
16 Lord, people ·remember [seek; come to] you when they are in trouble;
    they ·say quiet prayers to you [or utter incantations] when you punish them.
17 Lord, ·when we are with you [or because of you],
    we are like a woman giving birth to a baby;
    she cries and has pain from the birth.
18 ·In the same way [L We were pregnant/conceived], we ·had pain [writhed; strained].
    We gave birth, but only to wind.
We ·don’t bring [or can’t bring; haven’t brought] salvation to the ·land [earth]
    ·or given birth to new people for the world [L nor have the inhabitants of the earth fallen].
19 Your dead will live again;
    their bodies will rise from death.
You who ·lie in the ground [L dwell in the dust],
    wake up and ·be happy [shout joyfully]!
·The dew covering you [L Your dew] is ·like the dew of a new day [L a dew of lights];
    the ·ground [earth] will give birth to the dead.

Judgment: Reward or Punishment

20 My people, go into your ·rooms [chambers; inner rooms]
    and shut your doors behind you.
Hide in your rooms for a short time
    until God’s anger ·is finished [has passed by].
21 [L For look/T behold] The Lord ·will leave [is coming out of] his place
    to punish the ·people [inhabitants] of the world for their sins.
The earth will ·show [reveal; disclose] ·the blood of the people who have been killed [L its blood];
    it will not cover ·the dead [its slain] any longer.

27 ·At that time [L In that day] the Lord will punish Leviathan [C a sea creature in ancient Near Eastern texts that represents chaos; Job 3:8; 41:1, 12; Ps. 74:14; 104:26], the ·gliding [or swift-moving; or fleeing] ·snake [serpent].
    He will punish Leviathan, the ·coiled [writhing; twisting] ·snake [serpent],
    with his great and hard and powerful sword.
He will kill the ·monster [dragon] in the sea.
·At that time [L In that day]
    sing about the ·pleasant [beautiful; or fruitful] vineyard [C God’s people; 5:1–7].
“I, the Lord, will ·care for [watch over] that vineyard;
    I will water it ·at the right time [regularly; continually].
No one will hurt it,
    because I will guard it day and night.
I am not ·angry [wrathful].
If ·anyone builds a wall of thornbushes in war [or only there were briers and thorns against me!],
    I will march ·to it [against it in battle] and burn it.
But if anyone comes to me for ·safety [refuge; protection]
    and wants to make peace with me,
    ·he should come and [let him] make peace with me.”
In the days to come, ·the people of Jacob [L Jacob] will ·be like a plant with good roots [take root];
    Israel will ·grow like a plant beginning to bloom [L blossom and bud].
·Then the world will be filled with their children [L …and fill all the world with fruit].

The Lord Will Send Israel Away

·The Lord has not hurt [L Has the Lord struck down…?] his people as he ·hurt their enemies [L struck down those who struck them];
    ·his people have not [L have they…?] been killed like those who tried to kill them.
He will ·settle his argument with Israel [or oppose her; contend with her] by sending her far away.
    ·Like a hot desert wind [L With his fierce breath in the day of the east wind; C the east wind came from the desert], he will drive her away.
This is how ·Israel’s [L Jacob’s] guilt will be forgiven;
    this is how its sins will be taken away:
·Israel [L He] will crush the rocks of the altar [C pagan altars] to dust,
    and no ·Asherah idols [L Asherahs; C sacred trees or poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah] or ·altars [incense altars] will be left standing.
10 ·At that time [L In that day] the ·strong, walled [fortified] city will be ·empty [desolate]
    an abandoned settlement, empty like a ·desert [wilderness; 17:9; 32:14, 19].
Calves will eat grass there.
    They will lie down there
    and ·eat leaves from [strip bare] the branches.
11 The limbs will become dry and break off,
    so women will use them for firewood.
The people ·refuse to understand [lack understanding/discernment],
    so ·their Creator [the one who made them] will not comfort them;
·their Maker [the one who formed them] will not ·be kind [show favor] to them.

12 ·At that time [L In that day] the Lord will begin gathering ·his people [L you, sons/children of Israel] one by one from the ·Euphrates River [L flowing River] to the brook of Egypt. He will ·separate them from others as grain is separated from chaff [thresh/L beat them out]. 13 ·At that time [In that day] a great trumpet will be blown. Then those who are ·lost [or perishing] in Assyria and those who ·have run away [were exiled/driven out] to Egypt will come and worship the Lord on that holy mountain in Jerusalem.

The Lord’s Devastation of the Earth

24 See, the Lord is going to lay waste the earth(A)
    and devastate(B) it;
he will ruin its face
    and scatter(C) its inhabitants—
it will be the same
    for priest as for people,(D)
    for the master as for his servant,
    for the mistress as for her servant,
    for seller as for buyer,(E)
    for borrower as for lender,
    for debtor as for creditor.(F)
The earth will be completely laid waste(G)
    and totally plundered.(H)
The Lord has spoken(I) this word.

The earth dries up(J) and withers,(K)
    the world languishes and withers,
    the heavens(L) languish with the earth.(M)
The earth is defiled(N) by its people;
    they have disobeyed(O) the laws,
violated the statutes
    and broken the everlasting covenant.(P)
Therefore a curse(Q) consumes the earth;
    its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,(R)
    and very few are left.
The new wine dries up(S) and the vine withers;(T)
    all the merrymakers groan.(U)
The joyful timbrels(V) are stilled,
    the noise(W) of the revelers(X) has stopped,
    the joyful harp(Y) is silent.(Z)
No longer do they drink wine(AA) with a song;
    the beer is bitter(AB) to its drinkers.
10 The ruined city(AC) lies desolate;(AD)
    the entrance to every house is barred.
11 In the streets they cry out(AE) for wine;(AF)
    all joy turns to gloom,(AG)
    all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.
12 The city is left in ruins,(AH)
    its gate(AI) is battered to pieces.
13 So will it be on the earth
    and among the nations,
as when an olive tree is beaten,(AJ)
    or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.(AK)

14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy;(AL)
    from the west(AM) they acclaim the Lord’s majesty.
15 Therefore in the east(AN) give glory(AO) to the Lord;
    exalt(AP) the name(AQ) of the Lord, the God of Israel,
    in the islands(AR) of the sea.
16 From the ends of the earth(AS) we hear singing:(AT)
    “Glory(AU) to the Righteous One.”(AV)

But I said, “I waste away, I waste away!(AW)
    Woe(AX) to me!
The treacherous(AY) betray!
    With treachery the treacherous betray!(AZ)
17 Terror(BA) and pit and snare(BB) await you,
    people of the earth.(BC)
18 Whoever flees(BD) at the sound of terror
    will fall into a pit;(BE)
whoever climbs out of the pit
    will be caught in a snare.(BF)

The floodgates of the heavens(BG) are opened,
    the foundations of the earth shake.(BH)
19 The earth is broken up,(BI)
    the earth is split asunder,(BJ)
    the earth is violently shaken.
20 The earth reels like a drunkard,(BK)
    it sways like a hut(BL) in the wind;
so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion(BM)
    that it falls(BN)—never to rise again.(BO)

21 In that day(BP) the Lord will punish(BQ)
    the powers(BR) in the heavens above
    and the kings(BS) on the earth below.
22 They will be herded together
    like prisoners(BT) bound in a dungeon;(BU)
they will be shut up in prison
    and be punished[a] after many days.(BV)
23 The moon will be dismayed,
    the sun(BW) ashamed;
for the Lord Almighty will reign(BX)
    on Mount Zion(BY) and in Jerusalem,
    and before its elders—with great glory.(BZ)

Praise to the Lord

25 Lord, you are my God;(CA)
    I will exalt you and praise your name,(CB)
for in perfect faithfulness(CC)
    you have done wonderful things,(CD)
    things planned(CE) long ago.
You have made the city a heap of rubble,(CF)
    the fortified(CG) town a ruin,(CH)
the foreigners’ stronghold(CI) a city no more;
    it will never be rebuilt.(CJ)
Therefore strong peoples will honor you;(CK)
    cities of ruthless(CL) nations will revere you.
You have been a refuge(CM) for the poor,(CN)
    a refuge for the needy(CO) in their distress,
a shelter from the storm(CP)
    and a shade from the heat.
For the breath of the ruthless(CQ)
    is like a storm driving against a wall
    and like the heat of the desert.
You silence(CR) the uproar of foreigners;(CS)
    as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud,
    so the song of the ruthless(CT) is stilled.

On this mountain(CU) the Lord Almighty will prepare
    a feast(CV) of rich food for all peoples,
a banquet of aged wine—
    the best of meats and the finest of wines.(CW)
On this mountain he will destroy
    the shroud(CX) that enfolds all peoples,(CY)
the sheet that covers all nations;
    he will swallow up death(CZ) forever.
The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears(DA)
    from all faces;
he will remove his people’s disgrace(DB)
    from all the earth.
The Lord has spoken.(DC)

In that day(DD) they will say,

“Surely this is our God;(DE)
    we trusted(DF) in him, and he saved(DG) us.
This is the Lord, we trusted in him;
    let us rejoice(DH) and be glad in his salvation.”(DI)

10 The hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain;(DJ)
    but Moab(DK) will be trampled in their land
    as straw is trampled down in the manure.
11 They will stretch out their hands in it,
    as swimmers stretch out their hands to swim.
God will bring down(DL) their pride(DM)
    despite the cleverness[b] of their hands.
12 He will bring down your high fortified walls(DN)
    and lay them low;(DO)
he will bring them down to the ground,
    to the very dust.

A Song of Praise

26 In that day(DP) this song will be sung(DQ) in the land of Judah:

We have a strong city;(DR)
    God makes salvation
    its walls(DS) and ramparts.(DT)
Open the gates(DU)
    that the righteous(DV) nation may enter,
    the nation that keeps faith.
You will keep in perfect peace(DW)
    those whose minds are steadfast,
    because they trust(DX) in you.
Trust(DY) in the Lord forever,(DZ)
    for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock(EA) eternal.
He humbles those who dwell on high,
    he lays the lofty city low;
he levels it to the ground(EB)
    and casts it down to the dust.(EC)
Feet trample(ED) it down—
    the feet of the oppressed,(EE)
    the footsteps of the poor.(EF)

The path of the righteous is level;(EG)
    you, the Upright One,(EH) make the way of the righteous smooth.(EI)
Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws,[c](EJ)
    we wait(EK) for you;
your name(EL) and renown
    are the desire of our hearts.
My soul yearns for you in the night;(EM)
    in the morning my spirit longs(EN) for you.
When your judgments(EO) come upon the earth,
    the people of the world learn righteousness.(EP)
10 But when grace is shown to the wicked,(EQ)
    they do not learn righteousness;
even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil(ER)
    and do not regard(ES) the majesty of the Lord.
11 Lord, your hand is lifted high,(ET)
    but they do not see(EU) it.
Let them see your zeal(EV) for your people and be put to shame;(EW)
    let the fire(EX) reserved for your enemies consume them.

12 Lord, you establish peace(EY) for us;
    all that we have accomplished you have done(EZ) for us.
13 Lord our God, other lords(FA) besides you have ruled over us,
    but your name(FB) alone do we honor.(FC)
14 They are now dead,(FD) they live no more;
    their spirits(FE) do not rise.
You punished them and brought them to ruin;(FF)
    you wiped out all memory of them.(FG)
15 You have enlarged the nation, Lord;
    you have enlarged the nation.(FH)
You have gained glory for yourself;
    you have extended all the borders(FI) of the land.

16 Lord, they came to you in their distress;(FJ)
    when you disciplined(FK) them,
    they could barely whisper(FL) a prayer.[d]
17 As a pregnant woman about to give birth(FM)
    writhes and cries out in her pain,
    so were we in your presence, Lord.
18 We were with child, we writhed in labor,
    but we gave birth(FN) to wind.
We have not brought salvation(FO) to the earth,
    and the people of the world have not come to life.(FP)

19 But your dead(FQ) will live, Lord;
    their bodies will rise—
let those who dwell in the dust(FR)
    wake up and shout for joy—
your dew(FS) is like the dew of the morning;
    the earth will give birth to her dead.(FT)

20 Go, my people, enter your rooms
    and shut the doors(FU) behind you;
hide(FV) yourselves for a little while
    until his wrath(FW) has passed by.(FX)
21 See, the Lord is coming(FY) out of his dwelling(FZ)
    to punish(GA) the people of the earth for their sins.
The earth will disclose the blood(GB) shed on it;
    the earth will conceal its slain no longer.

Deliverance of Israel

27 In that day,(GC)

the Lord will punish with his sword(GD)
    his fierce, great and powerful sword—
Leviathan(GE) the gliding serpent,(GF)
    Leviathan the coiling serpent;
he will slay the monster(GG) of the sea.

In that day(GH)

“Sing(GI) about a fruitful vineyard:(GJ)
    I, the Lord, watch over it;
    I water(GK) it continually.
I guard(GL) it day and night
    so that no one may harm(GM) it.
    I am not angry.
If only there were briers and thorns confronting me!
    I would march against them in battle;
    I would set them all on fire.(GN)
Or else let them come to me for refuge;(GO)
    let them make peace(GP) with me,
    yes, let them make peace with me.”

In days to come Jacob will take root,(GQ)
    Israel will bud and blossom(GR)
    and fill all the world with fruit.(GS)

Has the Lord struck her
    as he struck(GT) down those who struck her?
Has she been killed
