Othniel, the First Judge

⁷ The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord’s sight; they forgot the Lord their God^(A) and worshipped the Baals and the Asherahs.

³³ When Gideon died, the Israelites turned and prostituted^(A) themselves by worshipping the Baals and made Baal-berith^[a] their god.

¹⁰ Then they cried out to the Lord and said, “We have sinned, for we abandoned the Lord and worshipped the Baals and the Ashtoreths. Now rescue us from the power of our enemies,^(A) and we will serve you.”

¹⁶ They abandoned all the commands of the Lord their God. They made cast images^(A) for themselves, two calves, and an Asherah pole.^(B) They bowed in worship to all the stars in the sky^(C) and served Baal.^(D)

¹⁴ Instead, they followed the stubbornness of their hearts^(A) and followed the Baals as their ancestors taught them.’^(B)
