⁵ Look, I am going to send you the prophet Elijah^(A) before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.^(B)

¹⁰ So the disciples asked him, ‘Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first? ’^(A)

¹¹ ‘Elijah is coming^[a] and will restore everything,’ he replied.^{[b](B) 12} ‘But I tell you: Elijah has already come, and they didn’t recognise him. On the contrary, they did whatever they pleased to him. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.’^{(C) 13} Then the disciples understood that he had spoken to them about John the Baptist.

¹¹ Then they asked him, ‘Why do the scribes^(A) say that Elijah must come first? ’^(B)

¹² ‘Elijah does come first and restores^(C) all things,’^(D) he replied. ‘Why then is it written^(E) that the Son of Man must suffer^(F) many things and be treated with contempt?^{(G) 13} But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written^(H) about him.’

¹⁷ And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children,^(A) and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.’^(B)

²¹ ‘What then? ’ they asked him. ‘Are you Elijah? ’^(A)

‘I am not,’ he said.

‘Are you the Prophet? ’^(B)

‘No,’ he answered.
