⁵ The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem^(A) were going out to him, and they were baptised by him in the River Jordan,^(B) confessing^(C) their sins.^{(D) 6} John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt round his waist and ate locusts^(E) and wild honey.^(F)

⁷ He proclaimed, ‘One who is more powerful^(G) than I am is coming after me.^(H) I am not worthy^(I) to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.^(J)
