²⁵ ‘Yes,’ he said.

When he went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first,^[a] ‘What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect tariffs or taxes? From their sons or from strangers? ’^[b](A)

² They began to accuse him, saying, ‘We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes^(A) to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.’

⁶ And for this reason you pay taxes, since the authorities are God’s servants, continually attending to these tasks.^{[a] 7} Pay your obligations^(A) to everyone: taxes to those to whom you owe taxes,^(B) tolls to those to whom you owe tolls, respect to those to whom you owe respect,^(C) and honour to those to whom you owe honour.
