⁴² Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the Scriptures:

¹⁰ Haven’t you read this Scripture:^(A)

²² saying,^(A) ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man^(B) suffer many things^(C) and be rejected^(D) by the elders, chief priests, and scribes,^(E) be killed, and be raised the third day.’^(F)

²⁵ But first it is necessary that he suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.^(A)

¹⁷ But he looked at them and said, ‘Then what is the meaning of this Scripture:^[a](A)

¹⁷ For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, even though he sought it with tears, because he didn’t find any opportunity for repentance.^(A)

⁴ As you come to him, a living stone – rejected by people but chosen and honoured by^[a] God – 

⁷ So honour will come to you who believe; but for the unbelieving,
