The Temptation of Jesus

4 Then^(A) Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.^(B)

¹⁰ Then Jesus told him, ‘Go away,^[a] Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’^[b](A)

⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil,^(A) and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer^(B) from the beginning^(C) and does not stand in the truth,^(D) because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature,^[a] because he is a liar and the father of lies.

¹⁰ and said, ‘You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery, you son of the devil^(A) and enemy of all that is right. Won’t you ever stop perverting the straight paths^(B) of the Lord?
