The Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ, According to Matthew

1 That Jesus is that Messiah, the Savior promised to the Fathers. 18 The nativity of Christ.

The (A)[a][b]book of the [c]generation of Jesus Christ the son of David, the [d]son of Abraham.

(B)Abraham begat Isaac. (C)And Isaac begat Jacob. And (D)Jacob begat Judah and his brethren.

(E)And Judah begat Perez, and Zerah of Tamar. And Perez begat Hezron. And Hezron begat Ram.

And Ram begat Amminadab. And Amminadab begat Nahshon. And Nahshon begat Salmon.

And Salmon begat (F)Boaz of Rahab. And Boaz begat Obed of Ruth. And Obed begat Jesse.

And (G)Jesse begat David the King. And David the King begat Solomon of her that was (H)the wife of Uriah.

And (I)Solomon begat Rehoboam. And Rehoboam begat Abijah. And Abijah begat Asa.

And Asa begat Jehoshaphat. And Jehoshaphat begat Joram. And Joram begat Uzziah.

And Uzziah begat Jotham. And Jotham begat Ahaz. And Ahaz begat Hezekiah.

10 And (J)Hezekiah begat Manasseh. And Manasseh begat Amon. And Amon begat Josiah.

11 And (K)Josiah begat Jakim. And Jakim [e]begat Jeconiah and his brethren about the time they were carried away to Babylon.

12 And after they were carried away into Babylon, (L)Jeconiah begat Shealtiel. And (M)Shealtiel be-gat Zerubbabel.

13 And Zerubbabel begat Abiud. And Abiud begat Eliakim. And Eliakim begat Azor.

14 And Azor begat Zadok. And Zadok begat Achim. And Achim begat Eliud.

15 And Eliud begat Eleazar. And Eleazar begat Matthan. And Matthan begat Jacob.

16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, that is called Christ.

17 So [f]all the generations from Abraham to David, are fourteen generations. And from David until they were carried away into Babylon, fourteen generations: and after they were carried away into Babylon until Christ, fourteen generations.

18 ¶ Now the birth of [g]Jesus Christ was thus, When as his mother Mary was (N)betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the holy Ghost.

19 Then Joseph her husband being a just man, and not willing to (O)make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.

20 But while he thought these things, behold, the Angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, the son of David, fear not to [h]take Mary thy [i]wife: for that which is [j]conceived in her, is of the holy Ghost.

21 And she shall bring [k]forth a son, and thou shalt (P)call his name JESUS: for he shall (Q)[l]save his people from their sins.

22 And all this was done that it might be fulfilled, which is spoken of the Lord by the Prophet, saying,

23 (R)Behold, a [m]virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is by interpretation, God with us.

24 ¶ Then Joseph being raised from sleep, did as the Angel of the Lord had enjoined him, and took his wife.

25 But he knew her not, [n]till she had brought forth her first born son, and he called his name JESUS.

The wise men, who are the firstfruits of the Gentiles, worship Christ. 14 Joseph fled into Egypt with Jesus and his mother. 16 Herod slayeth the children.

When (S)[o]Jesus then was born at Bethlehem in [p]Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came [q]Wise men from the East to Jerusalem,

Saying, Where is the King of the Jews that is born? for we have seen his star in the East, and are come to worship him.

When king Herod heard this, he was [r]troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

And gathering together all the [s]chief Priests and [t]Scribes of the people, he asked of them, where Christ should be born.

And they said unto him, At Bethlehem in Judea: for so it is written by the Prophet,

(T)And thou Bethlehem in the land of Judah, art not the [u]least among the Princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come the governor that [v]shall feed my people Israel.

Then Herod privily called the Wise men, and diligently inquired of them the time of the star that appeared,

And sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go, and search diligently for the babe: and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come also, and worship him.

¶ So when they had heard the king, they departed: and lo, the star which they had seen in the East, went before them, till it came and stood over the place where the babe was.

10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with an exceeding great joy,

11 And went into the house, and found the babe with Mary his mother, and [w]fell down, and worshipped him, and opened their [x]treasures, and presented unto him gifts, even gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

12 And after they were [y]warned of God in a dream, that they should not go again to Herod, they returned into their country another way.

13 [z]After their departure, behold, the Angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the babe and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there till I bring thee word, for Herod will seek the babe to destroy him.

14 So he arose and took the babe and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt.

15 And was there unto the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled, which is spoken of the Lord by the (U)Prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

16 ¶ Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked of the Wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently searched out of the Wise men.

17 Then was that fulfilled which is spoken [aa]by the Prophet Jeremiah, saying,

18 (V)In Ramah was [ab]a voice heard, mourning, and weeping, and great howling: [ac]Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they were not.

19 [ad]And when Herod was dead, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20 Saying, Arise, and take the babe and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the babe’s life.

21 Then he arose up, and took the babe and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: yet after he was warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee.

23 And went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Prophets, which was, That he should be called a Nazarite.

1 John preacheth. 4 His apparel and meat. 5 He baptizeth. 8 The fruits of repentance. 10 The axe at the root of the trees. 12 The fan and the chaff. 13 Christ is baptized.

And (W)in [ae]those days, [af]John the Baptist came and preached in the [ag]wilderness of Judea,

And said, [ah]Repent: for the [ai]kingdom of heaven is at hand.

For this is he of whom it is spoken by the Prophet Isaiah, saying, (X)The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord: [aj]make his paths straight.

(Y)And this John had his garment of camel’s hair, and a girdle of a skin about his loins, his meat was also [ak]locusts and wild honey.

(Z)Then went out to him [al]Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan,

And they were baptized of him in Jordan, [am]confessing their sins.

[an]Now when he saw many of the Pharisees, and of the Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, (AA)O generation of vipers, who hath forewarned you to flee from the anger to come?

[ao]Bring forth therefore fruit worthy amendment of life,

[ap]And [aq]think not to say [ar]with yourselves, (AB)We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able even of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

10 And now also is the axe put to the root of the trees: (AC)therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

11 (AD)[as]Indeed I baptize you with water to [at]amendment of life, but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear, he will baptize you with the holy Ghost, and with fire.

12 [au]Which hath his fan in his hand, and will [av]make clean his floor, and gather his wheat into his garner, but will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

13 (AE)[aw]Then came Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him.

14 But John earnestly put him back, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

15 Then Jesus answering, said to him, Let be now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill [ax]all righteousness. So he suffered him.

16 And Jesus when he was baptized, came straight out of the water. And lo, the heavens were opened unto [ay]him, and John saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and [lighting] upon him.

17 [az]And lo, a voice came from heaven, saying, (AF)This is my beloved Son, in whom I am [ba]well pleased.

1 Christ is tempted. 4 He vanquisheth the devil with Scripture. 11 The Angels minister unto him. 12 He preacheth repentance, and that himself is come. 18 The calling of Peter, Andrew. 21 James and John. 24 He preacheth the Gospel, and healeth the diseased.

Then (AG)was [bb]Jesus led aside of the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted of the devil.

And when he had fasted [bc]forty days, and forty nights, he was afterward hungry.

Then came to him the tempter, and said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

But he answering, said, It is written, (AH)Man shall not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Then the devil took him up into the holy city, and set him on a [bd]pinnacle of the Temple.

And said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down, for it is written, (AI)that he will give his Angels charge over thee, and with their hands they shall lift thee up, lest at any time thou shouldest dash thy foot against a stone.

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, (AJ)Thou shalt not [be]tempt the Lord thy God.

Again the devil took him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them,

And said to him, All these will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down, and worship me.

10 Then said Jesus unto him, Avoid Satan: for it is written, (AK)Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

11 (AL)Then the devil left him: and behold, the Angels came, and ministered unto him.

12 (AM)[bf]And when Jesus had heard that John was committed to prison, he returned into Galilee,

13 And leaving Nazareth, went and dwelt in [bg]Capernaum, which is near the sea in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali,

14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the Prophet, saying,

15 (AN)The land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali by the way of the [bh]sea, beyond Jordan, [bi]Galilee of the Gentiles:

16 The people which sat in darkness, saw great light: and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death, light is risen up.
