BOOK 4

God’s Eternity and Man’s Transitoriness.

A Prayer of [a]Moses, the man of God.

90 Lord, You have been our [b](A)dwelling place in all generations.
Before (B)the mountains were born
[c]Or You (C)gave birth to the earth and the world,
Even (D)from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

You (E)turn man back into dust
And say, “Return, O children of men.”
For (F)a thousand years in Your sight
Are like (G)yesterday when it passes by,
[d]Or as a (H)watch in the night.
You (I)have [e]swept them away like a flood, they [f](J)fall asleep;
In the morning they are like (K)grass which [g]sprouts anew.
In the morning it (L)flourishes and [h]sprouts anew;
Toward evening it (M)fades and (N)withers away.

For we have been (O)consumed by Your anger
And by Your wrath we have been [i]dismayed.
You have (P)placed our iniquities before You,
Our (Q)secret sins in the light of Your presence.
For (R)all our days have declined in Your fury;
We have finished our years like a [j]sigh.
10 As for the days of our [k]life, [l]they contain seventy years,
Or if due to strength, (S)eighty years,
Yet their pride is but (T)labor and sorrow;
For soon it is gone and we (U)fly away.
11 Who [m]understands the (V)power of Your anger
And Your fury, according to the (W)fear [n]that is due You?
12 So (X)teach us to number our days,
That we may [o](Y)present to You a heart of wisdom.

13 Do (Z)return, O Lord; (AA)how long will it be?
And [p]be (AB)sorry for Your servants.
14 O (AC)satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness,
That we may (AD)sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15 (AE)Make us glad [q]according to the days You have afflicted us,
And the (AF)years we have seen [r]evil.
16 Let Your (AG)work appear to Your servants
And Your (AH)majesty [s]to their children.
17 Let the (AI)favor of the Lord our God be upon us;
And [t](AJ)confirm for us the work of our hands;
Yes, [u]confirm the work of our hands.

Security of the One Who Trusts in the Lord.

91 He who dwells in the (AK)shelter of the Most High
Will abide in the (AL)shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My (AM)refuge and my (AN)fortress,
My God, in whom I (AO)trust!”
For it is He who delivers you from the (AP)snare of the trapper
And from the deadly (AQ)pestilence.
He will (AR)cover you with His pinions,
And (AS)under His wings you may seek refuge;
His (AT)faithfulness is a (AU)shield and bulwark.

You (AV)will not be afraid of the (AW)terror by night,
Or of the (AX)arrow that flies by day;
Of the (AY)pestilence that [v]stalks in darkness,
Or of the (AZ)destruction that lays waste at noon.
A thousand may fall at your side
And ten thousand at your right hand,
But (BA)it shall not approach you.
You will only look on with your eyes
And (BB)see the recompense of the wicked.
[w]For you have made the Lord, (BC)my refuge,
Even the Most High, (BD)your dwelling place.
10 (BE)No evil will befall you,
Nor will any plague come near your [x]tent.

11 For He will give (BF)His angels charge concerning you,
To guard you in all your ways.
12 They will (BG)bear you up in their hands,
That you do not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will (BH)tread upon the lion and cobra,
The young lion and the [y]serpent you will trample down.

14 (BI)Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will (BJ)set him securely on high, because he has (BK)known My name.
15 “He will (BL)call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in [z]trouble;
I will rescue him and (BM)honor him.
16 “With [aa]a (BN)long life I will satisfy him
And [ab](BO)let him see My salvation.”

Praise for the Lord’s Goodness.

A Psalm, a Song for the Sabbath day.

92 It is (BP)good to give thanks to the Lord
And to (BQ)sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
To (BR)declare Your lovingkindness in the morning
And Your (BS)faithfulness [ac]by night,
[ad]With the (BT)ten-stringed lute and [ae]with the (BU)harp,
[af]With resounding music [ag]upon the (BV)lyre.
For You, O Lord, have made me glad by [ah]what You (BW)have done,
I will (BX)sing for joy at the (BY)works of Your hands.

How (BZ)great are Your works, O Lord!
Your [ai](CA)thoughts are very (CB)deep.
A (CC)senseless man has no knowledge,
Nor does a (CD)stupid man understand this:
That when the wicked (CE)sprouted up like grass
And all (CF)who did iniquity flourished,
It was only that they might be (CG)destroyed forevermore.
But You, O Lord, are (CH)on high forever.
For, behold, Your enemies, O Lord,
For, behold, (CI)Your enemies will perish;
All who do iniquity will be (CJ)scattered.

10 But You have exalted my (CK)horn like that of the wild ox;
I have [aj]been (CL)anointed with fresh oil.
11 And my eye has (CM)looked exultantly upon [ak]my foes,
My ears hear of the evildoers who rise up against me.
12 The (CN)righteous man will [al]flourish like the palm tree,
He will grow like a (CO)cedar in Lebanon.
13 (CP)Planted in the house of the Lord,
They will flourish (CQ)in the courts of our God.
14 They will still [am](CR)yield fruit in old age;
They shall be [an]full of sap and very green,
15 To [ao]declare that (CS)the Lord is upright;
He is my (CT)rock, and there is (CU)no unrighteousness in Him.

The Majesty of the Lord.

93 (CV)The Lord [ap]reigns, He is (CW)clothed with majesty;
The Lord has (CX)clothed and girded Himself with strength;
Indeed, the (CY)world is firmly established, it will not be moved.
Your (CZ)throne is established from of old;
You (DA)are from everlasting.

The (DB)floods have lifted up, O Lord,
The floods have lifted up their voice,
The floods lift up their pounding waves.
More than the sounds of many waters,
Than the mighty breakers of the sea,
The Lord (DC)on high is mighty.
Your (DD)testimonies are fully confirmed;
(DE)Holiness befits Your house,
O Lord, [aq]forevermore.

The Lord Implored to Avenge His People.

94 O Lord, God of [ar](DF)vengeance,
God of [as]vengeance, [at](DG)shine forth!
(DH)Rise up, O (DI)Judge of the earth,
Render recompense (DJ)to the proud.
How long shall the wicked, O Lord,
How long shall the (DK)wicked exult?
They pour forth words, they (DL)speak arrogantly;
All who do wickedness (DM)vaunt themselves.
They (DN)crush Your people, O Lord,
And (DO)afflict Your heritage.
They (DP)slay the widow and the [au]stranger
And murder the orphans.
(DQ)They have said, “[av]The Lord does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob pay heed.”

Pay heed, you (DR)senseless among the people;
And when will you understand, (DS)stupid ones?
He who (DT)planted the ear, [aw]does He not hear?
He who formed the eye, [ax]does He not see?
10 He who [ay](DU)chastens the nations, will He not rebuke,
Even He who (DV)teaches man knowledge?
11 The Lord (DW)knows the thoughts of man,
[az]That they are a mere breath.

12 Blessed is the man whom (DX)You chasten, O [ba]Lord,
And (DY)whom You teach out of Your law;
13 That You may grant him (DZ)relief from the (EA)days of adversity,
Until (EB)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For (EC)the Lord will not abandon His people,
Nor will He (ED)forsake His inheritance.
15 For [bb](EE)judgment [bc]will again be righteous,
And all the upright in heart [bd]will follow it.
16 Who will (EF)stand up for me against evildoers?
Who will take his stand for me (EG)against those who do wickedness?

17 If (EH)the Lord had not been my help,
My soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.
18 If I should say, “(EI)My foot has slipped,”
Your lovingkindness, O Lord, will hold me up.
19 When my anxious thoughts [be]multiply within me,
Your (EJ)consolations delight my soul.
20 Can a [bf](EK)throne of destruction be allied with You,
One (EL)which devises [bg]mischief by decree?
21 They (EM)band themselves together against the [bh]life of the righteous
And (EN)condemn [bi]the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord has been my (EO)stronghold,
And my God the (EP)rock of my refuge.
23 He has (EQ)brought back their wickedness upon them
And will [bj](ER)destroy them in their evil;
The Lord our God will [bk]destroy them.

Praise to the Lord, and Warning against Unbelief.

95 O come, let us (ES)sing for joy to the Lord,
Let us shout joyfully to (ET)the rock of our salvation.
Let us (EU)come before His presence (EV)with [bl]thanksgiving,
Let us shout joyfully to Him (EW)with [bm]psalms.
For the Lord is a (EX)great God
And a great King (EY)above all gods,
In whose hand are the (EZ)depths of the earth,
The peaks of the mountains are His also.
[bn]The sea is His, for it was He (FA)who made it,
And His hands formed the dry land.

Come, let us (FB)worship and bow down,
Let us (FC)kneel before the Lord our (FD)Maker.
For He is our God,
And (FE)we are the people of His [bo](FF)pasture and the sheep of His hand.
(FG)Today, [bp]if you would hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts, as at [bq](FH)Meribah,
As in the day of [br](FI)Massah in the wilderness,
“When your fathers (FJ)tested Me,
They tried Me, though they had seen My work.
10 “For (FK)forty years I loathed that generation,
And said they are a people who err in their heart,
And they do not know My ways.
11 “Therefore I (FL)swore in My anger,
Truly they shall not enter into My (FM)rest.”

A Call to Worship the Lord the Righteous Judge.

96 (FN)Sing to the Lord a (FO)new song;
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
(FP)Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.
Tell of (FQ)His glory among the nations,
His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.
For (FR)great is the Lord and (FS)greatly to be praised;
He is to be (FT)feared (FU)above all gods.
For (FV)all the gods of the peoples are [bs]idols,
But (FW)the Lord made the heavens.
(FX)Splendor and majesty are before Him,
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.

[bt]Ascribe to the Lord, O (FY)families of the peoples,
[bu](FZ)Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
[bv]Ascribe to the Lord the (GA)glory of His name;
Bring an [bw](GB)offering and come into His courts.
(GC)Worship the Lord in [bx]holy attire;
(GD)Tremble before Him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “(GE)The Lord reigns;
Indeed, the (GF)world is firmly established, it will not be moved;
He will (GG)judge the peoples with [by]equity.”

11 Let the (GH)heavens be glad, and let the (GI)earth rejoice;
Let (GJ)the sea [bz]roar, and [ca]all it contains;
12 Let the (GK)field exult, and all that is in it.
Then all the (GL)trees of the forest will sing for joy
13 Before the Lord, (GM)for He is coming,
For He is coming to judge the earth.
(GN)He will judge the world in righteousness
And the peoples in His faithfulness.

The Lord’s Power and Dominion.

97 (GO)The Lord [cb]reigns, let the (GP)earth rejoice;
Let the many [cc](GQ)islands be glad.
(GR)Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;
(GS)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
(GT)Fire goes before Him
And (GU)burns up His adversaries round about.
His (GV)lightnings lit up the world;
The earth saw and (GW)trembled.
The mountains (GX)melted like wax at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the (GY)Lord of the whole earth.
The (GZ)heavens declare His righteousness,
And (HA)all the peoples have seen His glory.

Let all those be ashamed who serve (HB)graven images,
Who boast themselves of (HC)idols;
[cd](HD)Worship Him, all you [ce]gods.
Zion [cf]heard this and (HE)was glad,
And the daughters of Judah have rejoiced
Because of Your judgments, O Lord.
For You are the Lord (HF)Most High over all the earth;
You are exalted far (HG)above all [cg]gods.

10 (HH)Hate evil, you who love the Lord,
Who (HI)preserves the souls of His godly ones;
He (HJ)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 (HK)Light is sown like seed for the righteous
And (HL)gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Be (HM)glad in the Lord, you righteous ones,
And (HN)give thanks [ch]to His holy name.

A Call to Praise the Lord for His Righteousness.

A Psalm.

98 O sing to the Lord a (HO)new song,
For He has done (HP)wonderful things,
His (HQ)right hand and His (HR)holy arm have [ci]gained the victory for Him.
(HS)The Lord has made known His salvation;
He has (HT)revealed His [cj]righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has (HU)remembered His lovingkindness and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
(HV)All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

(HW)Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
(HX)Break forth and sing for joy and sing praises.
Sing praises to the Lord with the (HY)lyre,
With the lyre and the [ck](HZ)sound of melody.
With (IA)trumpets and the sound of the horn
(IB)Shout joyfully before (IC)the King, the Lord.

Let the (ID)sea roar and [cl]all it contains,
The (IE)world and those who dwell in it.
Let the (IF)rivers clap their hands,
Let the (IG)mountains sing together for joy
Before the Lord, for He is coming to (IH)judge the earth;
He will judge the world with righteousness
And (II)the peoples with [cm]equity.

Praise to the Lord for His Fidelity to Israel.

99 (IJ)The Lord reigns, let the peoples tremble;
He [cn](IK)is enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake!
The Lord [co]is (IL)great in Zion,
And He is (IM)exalted above all the peoples.
Let them praise Your (IN)great and awesome name;
(IO)Holy is [cp]He.
The [cq]strength of the King (IP)loves [cr]justice;
You have established [cs](IQ)equity;
You have (IR)executed [ct]justice and righteousness in Jacob.
[cu](IS)Exalt the Lord our God
And (IT)worship at His footstool;
(IU)Holy is He.

(IV)Moses and Aaron were among His (IW)priests,
And (IX)Samuel was among those who (IY)called on His name;
They (IZ)called upon the Lord and He answered them.
He (JA)spoke to them in the pillar of cloud;
They (JB)kept His testimonies
And the statute that He gave them.
O Lord our God, You (JC)answered them;
You were a (JD)forgiving God to them,
And yet an (JE)avenger of their evil deeds.
Exalt the Lord our God
And worship at His holy hill,
For holy is the Lord our God.

All Men Exhorted to Praise God.

A Psalm for [cv]Thanksgiving.

100 (JF)Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.
(JG)Serve the Lord with gladness;
(JH)Come before Him with joyful singing.
Know that (JI)the Lord [cw]Himself is God;
It is He who has (JJ)made us, and [cx]not we ourselves;
We are (JK)His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter His gates (JL)with [cy]thanksgiving
And His courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him, (JM)bless His name.
For (JN)the Lord is good;
(JO)His lovingkindness is everlasting
And His (JP)faithfulness to all generations.

The Psalmist’s Profession of Uprightness.

A Psalm of David.

101 I will (JQ)sing of lovingkindness and [cz]justice,
To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.
I will [da](JR)give heed to the [db]blameless way.
When will You come to me?
I will walk within my house in the [dc](JS)integrity of my heart.
I will set no (JT)worthless thing before my eyes;
I hate the [dd]work of those who (JU)fall away;
It shall not fasten its grip on me.
A (JV)perverse heart shall depart from me;
I will know no evil.
Whoever secretly (JW)slanders his neighbor, him I will [de]destroy;
No one who has a (JX)haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.

My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me;
He who walks in a [df](JY)blameless way is the one who will minister to me.
He who (JZ)practices deceit shall not dwell within my house;
He who speaks falsehood (KA)shall not [dg]maintain his position before me.
(KB)Every morning I will [dh](KC)destroy all the wicked of the land,
So as to (KD)cut off from the (KE)city of the Lord all those who do iniquity.

Prayer of an Afflicted Man for Mercy on Himself and on Zion.

A Prayer of the Afflicted when he is faint and [di]pours out his complaint before the Lord.

102 (KF)Hear my prayer, O Lord!
And let my cry for help (KG)come to You.
(KH)Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my distress;
(KI)Incline Your ear to me;
In the day when I call (KJ)answer me quickly.
For my days (KK)have been [dj]consumed in smoke,
And my (KL)bones have been scorched like a hearth.
My heart (KM)has been smitten like [dk]grass and has (KN)withered away,
Indeed, I (KO)forget to eat my bread.
Because of the [dl]loudness of my groaning
My (KP)bones [dm]cling to my flesh.
I [dn]resemble a (KQ)pelican of the wilderness;
I have become like an owl of the waste places.
I (KR)lie awake,
I have become like a lonely bird on a housetop.

My enemies (KS)have reproached me all day long;
Those who [do](KT)deride me [dp]have used my name as a (KU)curse.
For I have eaten ashes like bread
And (KV)mingled my drink with weeping
10 (KW)Because of Your indignation and Your wrath,
For You have (KX)lifted me up and cast me away.
11 My days are like a [dq](KY)lengthened shadow,
And [dr]I (KZ)wither away like [ds]grass.

12 But You, O Lord, [dt](LA)abide forever,
And Your [du](LB)name to all generations.
13 You will (LC)arise and have (LD)compassion on Zion;
For (LE)it is time to be gracious to her,
For the (LF)appointed time has come.
14 Surely Your servants [dv]find pleasure in her stones
And feel pity for her dust.
15 [dw]So the [dx](LG)nations will fear the name of the Lord
And (LH)all the kings of the earth Your glory.
16 For the Lord has (LI)built up Zion;
He has (LJ)appeared in His glory.
17 He has (LK)regarded the prayer of the [dy]destitute
And has not despised their prayer.

18 [dz]This will be (LL)written for the (LM)generation to come,
[ea]That (LN)a people yet to be created [eb]may praise [ec]the Lord.
19 For He (LO)looked down from His holy height;
(LP)From heaven the Lord gazed [ed]upon the earth,
20 To hear the (LQ)groaning of the prisoner,
To (LR)set free [ee]those who were doomed to death,
21 That men may (LS)tell of the name of the Lord in Zion
And His praise in Jerusalem,
22 When (LT)the peoples are gathered together,
And the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.

23 He has weakened my strength in the way;
He has (LU)shortened my days.
24 I say, “O my God, (LV)do not take me away in the [ef]midst of my days,
Your (LW)years are throughout all generations.
25 “Of old You (LX)founded the earth,
And the (LY)heavens are the work of Your hands.
26 [eg]Even they will (LZ)perish, but You endure;
And all of them will wear out like a garment;
Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed.
27 “But You are [eh](MA)the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.
28 “The (MB)children of Your servants will continue,
And their [ei](MC)descendants will be established before You.”

Praise for the Lord’s Mercies.

A Psalm of David.

103 (MD)Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His (ME)holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And (MF)forget none of His benefits;
Who (MG)pardons all your iniquities,
Who (MH)heals all your diseases;
Who (MI)redeems your life from the pit,
Who (MJ)crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
Who (MK)satisfies your [ej]years with good things,
So that your youth is (ML)renewed like the eagle.

The Lord (MM)performs [ek]righteous deeds
And judgments for all who are (MN)oppressed.
He (MO)made known His ways to Moses,
His (MP)acts to the sons of Israel.
The Lord is (MQ)compassionate and gracious,
(MR)Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.
He (MS)will not always strive with us,
Nor will He (MT)keep His anger forever.
10 He has (MU)not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high (MV)as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who [el]fear Him.
12 As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He (MW)removed our transgressions from us.
13 Just (MX)as a father has compassion on his children,
So the Lord has compassion on those who [em]fear Him.
14 For (MY)He Himself knows [en]our frame;
He (MZ)is mindful that we are but (NA)dust.

15 As for man, his days are (NB)like grass;
As a (NC)flower of the field, so he flourishes.
16 When the (ND)wind has passed over it, it is no more,
And its (NE)place acknowledges it no longer.
17 But the (NF)lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who [eo]fear Him,
And His [ep]righteousness (NG)to children’s children,
18 To (NH)those who keep His covenant
And remember His precepts to do them.

19 The Lord has established His (NI)throne in the heavens,
And His [eq](NJ)sovereignty rules over [er]all.
20 Bless the Lord, you (NK)His angels,
(NL)Mighty in strength, who (NM)perform His word,
(NN)Obeying the voice of His word!
21 Bless the Lord, all you (NO)His hosts,
You (NP)who serve Him, doing His will.
22 Bless the Lord, (NQ)all you works of His,
In all places of His dominion;
Bless the Lord, O my soul!

The Lord’s Care over All His Works.

104 (NR)Bless the Lord, O my soul!
O Lord my God, You are very great;
You are (NS)clothed with splendor and majesty,
Covering Yourself with (NT)light as with a cloak,
(NU)Stretching out heaven like a tent curtain.
[es]He (NV)lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters;
[et]He makes the (NW)clouds His chariot;
[eu]He walks upon the (NX)wings of the wind;
[ev]He makes [ew](NY)the winds His messengers,
[ex]Flaming (NZ)fire His ministers.

He (OA)established the earth upon its foundations,
So that it will not [ey]totter forever and ever.
You (OB)covered it with the deep as with a garment;
The waters were standing above the mountains.
At Your (OC)rebuke they fled,
At the (OD)sound of Your thunder they hurried away.
The mountains rose; the valleys sank down
To the (OE)place which You established for them.
You set a (OF)boundary that they may not pass over,
So that they will not return to cover the earth.

10 [ez]He sends forth (OG)springs in the valleys;
They flow between the mountains;
11 They (OH)give drink to every beast of the field;
The (OI)wild donkeys quench their thirst.
12 [fa]Beside them the birds of the heavens (OJ)dwell;
They [fb]lift up their voices among the branches.
13 [fc]He (OK)waters the mountains from His upper chambers;
(OL)The earth is satisfied with the fruit of His works.

14 [fd]He causes the (OM)grass to grow for the [fe]cattle,
And (ON)vegetation for the [ff]labor of man,
So that [fg]he may bring forth [fh]food (OO)from the earth,
15 And (OP)wine which makes man’s heart glad,
(OQ)So that he may make his face glisten with oil,
And [fi]food which (OR)sustains man’s heart.
16 The trees of the Lord [fj]drink their fill,
The cedars of Lebanon which He planted,
17 Where the (OS)birds build their nests,
And the (OT)stork, whose home is the [fk]fir trees.

18 The high mountains are for the (OU)wild goats;
The (OV)cliffs are a refuge for the [fl](OW)shephanim.
19 He made the moon (OX)for the seasons;
The (OY)sun knows the place of its setting.
20 You (OZ)appoint darkness and it becomes night,
In which all the (PA)beasts of the forest [fm]prowl about.
21 The (PB)young lions roar after their prey
[fn]And (PC)seek their food from God.
22 When the sun rises they withdraw
And lie down in their (PD)dens.
23 Man goes forth to (PE)his work
And to his labor until evening.

24 O Lord, how (PF)many are Your works!
[fo]In (PG)wisdom You have made them all;
The (PH)earth is full of Your [fp]possessions.
25 [fq]There is the (PI)sea, great and [fr]broad,
In which are swarms without number,
Animals both small and great.
26 There the (PJ)ships move along,
And [fs](PK)Leviathan, which You have formed to sport in it.

27 They all (PL)wait for You
To (PM)give them their food in [ft]due season.
28 You give to them, they gather it up;
You (PN)open Your hand, they are satisfied with good.
29 You (PO)hide Your face, they are dismayed;
You (PP)take away their [fu]spirit, they expire
And (PQ)return to their dust.
30 You send forth Your [fv](PR)Spirit, they are created;
And You renew the face of the ground.

31 Let the (PS)glory of the Lord endure forever;
Let the Lord (PT)be glad in His works;
32 [fw]He (PU)looks at the earth, and it (PV)trembles;
He (PW)touches the mountains, and they smoke.
33 [fx]I will sing to the Lord [fy](PX)as long as I live;
[fz]I will (PY)sing praise to my God [ga]while I have my being.
34 Let my (PZ)meditation be pleasing to Him;
As for me, I shall (QA)be glad in the Lord.
35 Let sinners be (QB)consumed from the earth
And let the (QC)wicked be no more.
(QD)Bless the Lord, O my soul.
[gb](QE)Praise [gc]the Lord!

The Lord’s Wonderful Works in Behalf of Israel.

105 Oh (QF)give thanks to the Lord, (QG)call upon His name;
(QH)Make known His deeds among the peoples.
Sing to Him, (QI)sing praises to Him;
[gd](QJ)Speak of all His [ge]wonders.
[gf]Glory in His holy name;
Let the (QK)heart of those who seek the Lord be glad.
Seek the Lord and (QL)His strength;
(QM)Seek His face continually.
Remember His [gg](QN)wonders which He has done,
His marvels and the (QO)judgments [gh]uttered by His mouth,
O seed of (QP)Abraham, His servant,
O sons of (QQ)Jacob, His (QR)chosen ones!
He is the Lord our God;
His (QS)judgments are in all the earth.

He has (QT)remembered His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded to a (QU)thousand generations,
The (QV)covenant which He made with Abraham,
And His (QW)oath to Isaac.
10 Then He (QX)confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,
To Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11 Saying, “(QY)To you I will give the land of Canaan
As the [gi](QZ)portion of your inheritance,”
12 When they were only a (RA)few men in number,
Very few, and (RB)strangers in it.
13 And they wandered about from nation to nation,
From one kingdom to another people.
14 He (RC)permitted no man to oppress them,
And He (RD)reproved kings for their sakes:
15 (RE)Do not touch My anointed ones,
And do My prophets no harm.”

16 And He (RF)called for a famine upon the land;
He (RG)broke the whole staff of bread.
17 He (RH)sent a man before them,
Joseph, who was (RI)sold as a slave.
18 They afflicted his (RJ)feet with fetters,
[gj]He himself was laid in irons;
19 Until the time that his (RK)word came to pass,
The word of the Lord [gk](RL)tested him.
20 The (RM)king sent and released him,
The ruler of peoples, and set him free.
21 He (RN)made him lord of his house
And ruler over all his possessions,
22 To [gl]imprison his princes [gm](RO)at will,
That he might teach his elders wisdom.
23 (RP)Israel also came into Egypt;
Thus Jacob (RQ)sojourned in the land of Ham.
24 And He (RR)caused His people to be very fruitful,
And made them stronger than their adversaries.

25 He (RS)turned their heart to hate His people,
To (RT)deal craftily with His servants.
26 He (RU)sent Moses His servant,
And (RV)Aaron, whom He had chosen.
27 They [gn](RW)performed His wondrous acts among them,
And miracles in the land of Ham.
28 He (RX)sent darkness and made it dark;
And they did not (RY)rebel against His words.
29 He (RZ)turned their waters into blood
And caused their fish to die.
30 Their land swarmed with (SA)frogs
Even in the (SB)chambers of their kings.
31 He spoke, and there came a (SC)swarm of flies
And (SD)gnats in all their territory.
32 He [go]gave them (SE)hail for rain,
And flaming fire in their land.
33 He (SF)struck down their vines also and their fig trees,
And shattered the trees of their territory.
34 He spoke, and (SG)locusts came,
And young locusts, even without number,
35 And ate up all vegetation in their land,
And ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 He also (SH)struck down all the firstborn in their land,
The (SI)first fruits of all their vigor.

37 Then He brought them out with (SJ)silver and gold,
And among His tribes there was not one who stumbled.
38 Egypt was (SK)glad when they departed,
For the (SL)dread of them had fallen upon them.
39 He spread a (SM)cloud for a [gp]covering,
And (SN)fire to illumine by night.
40 [gq]They (SO)asked, and He brought (SP)quail,
And satisfied them with the [gr](SQ)bread of heaven.
41 He opened the [gs]rock and (SR)water flowed out;
[gt]It ran in the dry places like a river.
42 For He (SS)remembered His holy word
With Abraham His servant;
43 And He brought forth His people with joy,
His chosen ones with a joyful (ST)shout.
44 He (SU)gave them also the lands of the [gu]nations,
That they (SV)might take possession of the fruit of the peoples’ labor,
45 So that they might (SW)keep His statutes
And observe His laws,
[gv]Praise [gw]the Lord!

Israel’s Rebelliousness and the Lord’s Deliverances.

106 [gx]Praise [gy]the Lord!
Oh (SX)give thanks to the Lord, for He (SY)is good;
For (SZ)His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Who can speak of the (TA)mighty deeds of the Lord,
Or can show forth all His praise?
How blessed are those who keep [gz]justice,
[ha]Who (TB)practice righteousness at all times!

Remember me, O Lord, in Your (TC)favor [hb]toward Your people;
Visit me with Your salvation,
That I may see the (TD)prosperity of Your chosen ones,
That I may (TE)rejoice in the gladness of Your nation,
That I may (TF)glory with Your [hc]inheritance.

(TG)We have sinned [hd](TH)like our fathers,
We have committed iniquity, we have behaved wickedly.
Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your [he]wonders;
They (TI)did not remember [hf]Your abundant kindnesses,
But (TJ)rebelled by the sea, at the [hg]Red Sea.
Nevertheless He saved them (TK)for the sake of His name,
That He might (TL)make His power known.
Thus He (TM)rebuked the [hh]Red Sea and it (TN)dried up,
And He (TO)led them through the deeps, as through the wilderness.
10 So He (TP)saved them from the [hi]hand of the one who hated them,
And (TQ)redeemed them from the [hj]hand of the enemy.
11 (TR)The waters covered their adversaries;
Not one of them was left.
12 Then they (TS)believed His words;
They (TT)sang His praise.

13 They quickly (TU)forgot His works;
They (TV)did not wait for His counsel,
14 But (TW)craved intensely in the wilderness,
And [hk](TX)tempted God in the desert.
15 So He (TY)gave them their request,
But (TZ)sent a [hl]wasting disease among them.

16 When they became (UA)envious of Moses in the camp,
And of Aaron, the holy one of the Lord,
17 The (UB)earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
And engulfed the [hm]company of Abiram.
18 And a (UC)fire blazed up in their [hn]company;
The flame consumed the wicked.

19 They (UD)made a calf in Horeb
And worshiped a molten image.
20 Thus they (UE)exchanged their glory
For the image of an ox that eats grass.
21 They (UF)forgot God their Savior,
Who had done (UG)great things in Egypt,
22 [ho](UH)Wonders in the land of Ham
And awesome things by the [hp]Red Sea.
23 Therefore (UI)He said that He would destroy them,
Had not (UJ)Moses His chosen one stood in the breach before Him,
To turn away His wrath from destroying them.
24 Then they (UK)despised the (UL)pleasant land;
They (UM)did not believe in His word,
25 But (UN)grumbled in their tents;
They did not listen to the voice of the Lord.
26 Therefore He [hq](UO)swore to them
That He would cast them down in the wilderness,
27 And that He would (UP)cast their seed among the nations
And (UQ)scatter them in the lands.

28 They (UR)joined themselves also to [hr]Baal-peor,
And ate (US)sacrifices offered to the dead.
29 Thus they (UT)provoked Him to anger with their deeds,
And the plague broke out among them.
30 Then Phinehas (UU)stood up and interposed,
And so the (UV)plague was stayed.
31 And it was (UW)reckoned to him for righteousness,
To all generations forever.

32 They also (UX)provoked Him to wrath at the waters of [hs]Meribah,
So that it (UY)went hard with Moses on their account;
33 Because they (UZ)were rebellious against [ht]His Spirit,
He spoke rashly with his lips.

34 They (VA)did not destroy the peoples,
As (VB)the Lord commanded them,
35 But (VC)they mingled with the nations
And learned their [hu]practices,
36 And (VD)served their idols,
(VE)Which became a snare to them.
37 They even (VF)sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the (VG)demons,
38 And shed (VH)innocent blood,
The blood of their (VI)sons and their daughters,
Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;
And the land was (VJ)polluted with the blood.
39 Thus they became (VK)unclean in their [hv]practices,
And (VL)played the harlot in their deeds.

40 Therefore the (VM)anger of the Lord was kindled against His people
And He (VN)abhorred His [hw](VO)inheritance.
41 Then (VP)He gave them into the hand of the [hx]nations,
And those who hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies also (VQ)oppressed them,
And they were subdued under their [hy]power.
43 Many times He would (VR)deliver them;
They, however, were rebellious in their (VS)counsel,
And so (VT)sank down in their iniquity.

44 Nevertheless He looked upon their distress
When He (VU)heard their cry;
45 And He (VV)remembered His covenant for their sake,
And [hz](VW)relented (VX)according to the greatness of His lovingkindness.
46 He also made them (VY)objects of compassion
In the presence of all their captors.

47 (VZ)Save us, O Lord our God,
And (WA)gather us from among the nations,
To give thanks to Your holy name
And [ia](WB)glory in Your praise.
48 (WC)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
From everlasting even to everlasting.
And let all the people say, “Amen.”
[ib]Praise [ic]the Lord!
