⁷³ The priests, Levites, gatekeepers, temple singers, some of the people, temple servants, and all Israel settled in their towns.^(A)

Public Reading of the Law

When the seventh month^(B) came and the Israelites had settled in their towns, 8 ¹ all the people gathered together^(C) at the square in front of the Water Gate.^(D) They asked the scribe Ezra^(E) to bring the book of the law of Moses^(F) that the Lord had given to Israel. ² On the first day of the seventh month,^(G) the priest Ezra^(H) brought the law^(I) before the assembly of men, women, and all who could listen with understanding. ³ While he was facing the square in front of the Water Gate,^(J) he read out of it from daybreak until noon before the men, the women, and those who could understand. All the people listened attentively^[a] to the book of the law.^(K)
