主對約書亞的吩咐
1 耶和華的僕人摩西死了以後，耶和華對摩西的助手——嫩的兒子約書亞說： 2 「我的僕人摩西已經死了，現在你和全體以色列人要準備渡過約旦河，到我要賜給你們的地方去。 3 我已把你們腳掌將踏之地都賜給了你們，正如我對摩西的應許。 4 從南部的曠野直到北部的黎巴嫩，從東部的幼發拉底大河直到西部的地中海，包括赫人居住的全境，都將是你們的領土。 5 在你有生之年，沒有人能夠抵擋你。過去我怎樣與摩西同在，也必照樣與你同在，我必不離開你，也不丟棄你。 6 你要剛強勇敢，因為你要帶領這些人佔領我起誓賜給他們祖先的土地。 7 你只要剛強勇敢，謹遵我僕人摩西所吩咐你的一切律法，毫不偏離，就可以無往不利。 8 你要常常誦讀這律法書，晝夜不斷地思想，以便謹遵律法書上的一切指示。這樣，你必亨通、順利。 9 我再次吩咐你，要剛強勇敢！不要害怕，也不要灰心，因為你無論走到哪裡，你的上帝耶和華必與你同在。」
10 於是，約書亞吩咐民眾的首領說： 11 「你們要走遍全營，吩咐大家預備好食物。因為三天之內，你們就要過約旦河，去佔領你們的上帝耶和華賜給你們的土地。」
12 約書亞又對呂便支派、迦得支派和瑪拿西半個支派的人說： 13 「你們要牢記耶和華的僕人摩西吩咐你們的話，他說你們的上帝耶和華要把約旦河東面的土地賜給你們，讓你們安居。 14 你們的妻子兒女和牲畜可以留在約旦河東岸摩西分給你們的土地上，但你們當中所有的勇士要帶著兵器先過約旦河，幫助你們的弟兄。 15 要等到你們的上帝耶和華使你們的弟兄像你們一樣得到祂所賜的土地，安居以後，你們才可以回到約旦河東，在耶和華的僕人摩西分給你們的土地上定居。」 16 他們回答約書亞說：「凡你命令我們的，我們一定遵行。無論你派我們去哪裡，我們一定去。 17 我們在一切的事上怎樣服從摩西，也必照樣服從你，願你的上帝耶和華與你同在，像與摩西同在一樣。 18 任何人違抗你的命令，不照你的吩咐去做，都要被處死。你要剛強勇敢！」

I. Conquest of Canaan
Chapter 1
Divine Promise of Assistance. 1 After Moses, the servant of the Lord, had died, the Lord said to Moses’ aide Joshua, son of Nun: 2 [a]Moses my servant is dead. So now, you and the whole people with you, prepare to cross the Jordan to the land that I will give the Israelites. 3 (A)Every place where you set foot I have given you, as I promised Moses. 4 [b]All the land of the Hittites, from the wilderness and the Lebanon east to the great river Euphrates and west to the Great Sea, will be your territory.(B) 5 No one can withstand you as long as you live. As I was with Moses, I will be with you:(C) I will not leave you nor forsake you. 6 Be strong and steadfast, so that you may give this people possession of the land I swore to their ancestors that I would give them. 7 (D)Only be strong and steadfast, being careful to observe the entire law which Moses my servant enjoined on you. Do not swerve from it either to the right or to the left, that you may succeed wherever you go. 8 Do not let this book of the law depart from your lips. Recite it by day and by night,(E) that you may carefully observe all that is written in it; then you will attain your goal; then you will succeed. 9 I command you: be strong and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord, your God, is with you wherever you go.
10 (F)So Joshua commanded the officers of the people: 11 “Go through the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for three days from now you shall cross the Jordan here, to march in and possess the land the Lord, your God, is giving as your possession.’”
The Transjordan Tribes. 12 (G)Joshua addressed the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh: 13 “Remember what Moses, the servant of the Lord, commanded you when he said, ‘The Lord, your God, is about to give you rest; he will give you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your children, and your livestock may remain in the land Moses gave you here beyond the Jordan. But all the warriors among you must cross over armed, ahead of your kindred, and you must help them 15 until the Lord has settled your kindred, and they like you possess the land the Lord, your God, is giving them. Afterward you may return and possess your own land, which Moses, the servant of the Lord, has given you east of the Jordan.”(H) 16 They answered Joshua, “We will do all you have commanded us, and we will go wherever you send us. 17 As completely as we obeyed Moses, we will obey you. Only, may the Lord, your God, be with you as God was with Moses. 18 Anyone who rebels against your orders and does not obey all your commands shall be put to death. Only be strong and steadfast.”

- 1:2–9 The beginning of the Book of Joshua strongly emphasizes the credentials of Joshua as Moses’ worthy successor (vv. 2, 3, 4, 7; cf. v. 17; 3:7; 4:14; 5:15). The movement Joshua leads, whereby the Israelites take possession of the land of Canaan, is thus made continuous with the exodus from Egypt, even though (except for Joshua and Caleb) the generation that left Egypt under Moses’ leadership has died out (5:4, 6), and the people who will make the land of Canaan the land of Israel are a new generation. Thus the book is at pains to establish the continuity between exodus and conquest.
- 1:4 The frontiers are as follows: in the south the wilderness of Sinai, in the north the Lebanon range, in the east the Euphrates, and in the west the Great Sea, the Mediterranean. These boundaries are ideal rather than actual.
