婚姻關係的例子
7 弟兄姊妹，我現在對那些熟悉律法的人說：你們難道不知道律法只在人活著的時候管轄人嗎？ 2 比方說，一個婦人結了婚，只要丈夫還在世，她就受律法的約束要與丈夫在一起。如果丈夫死了，她就脫離了與丈夫的婚姻關係。 3 丈夫還活著的時候，她若與別的男人發生性關係，便算淫婦。丈夫若死了，她就脫離了與丈夫的婚姻關係，即使改嫁，也不是淫婦。
4 我的弟兄姊妹，同樣，你們藉著基督的身體向著律法也死了，使你們可以歸於那位從死裡復活的基督，好為上帝結果子。 5 從前我們受自己罪惡本性[a]的控制，因律法而激發的罪惡慾望在我們身上發作，以致結出死亡的果子。 6 但現在，我們既然向著一度捆綁我們的律法死了，就脫離了律法的控制，能夠以聖靈所賜的新樣式，而不是以拘守教條的舊樣式事奉上帝。
律法使人知罪
7 那麼，我們可以說律法本身是罪嗎？當然不是！沒有律法，我們就不知道什麼是罪。律法若不說「不可貪心」，我就不知道什麼是貪心。 8 然而，罪卻趁機利用誡命在我裡面生出各種貪念，因為沒有律法，罪是死的。 9 我沒認識律法之前是活的，但律法來了之後，罪就活了，而我卻死了。 10 我發現那本來要使人活的誡命反而叫我死， 11 因為罪利用誡命趁機引誘我，而且藉著誡命殺了我。
12 其實律法是聖潔的，誡命也是聖潔、公義、良善的。 13 既然如此，難道是良善的誡命叫我死嗎？當然不是！是罪藉著良善的誡命叫我死。這樣，罪藉著誡命叫我死就顯出它實在是邪惡至極！
善惡相爭
14 我們知道律法是屬靈的，我卻屬乎肉體，已經賣給罪做奴隸了。 15 我不明白自己的所作所為，因為我想做的，我做不到；而我憎恨的惡事，我偏偏去做！ 16 既然我不想做的，我反倒去做，我就得承認律法是好的。 17 其實那並不是我做的，而是住在我裡面的罪做的。 18 我也知道，在我的罪惡本性裡面毫無良善，我有行善的心願，卻沒有行善的力量。 19 我想行善，卻不能行；我不想作惡，反倒去作。 20 如果我不想做的，我反倒去做，這就不是我自己做的，而是住在我裡面的罪做的。
21 因此，我發現一個律：我想行善的時候，惡就不放過我。 22 按著我裡面的意思[b]，我喜愛上帝的律。 23 然而，我發覺在我身體內另有一個律和我心中的律作戰，將我俘虜，使我服從身體內犯罪的律。 24 我真是苦啊！誰能救我脫離這個被死亡控制的身體呢？ 25 感謝上帝，祂藉著我們的主耶穌基督救了我！這樣看來，我的內心服從上帝的律法，但我罪惡的本性卻服從犯罪的律。

Released From the Law, Bound to Christ
7 Do you not know, brothers and sisters(A)—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.(B) 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress.(C) But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law(D) through the body of Christ,(E) that you might belong to another,(F) to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For when we were in the realm of the flesh,[a](G) the sinful passions aroused by the law(H) were at work in us,(I) so that we bore fruit for death.(J) 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law(K) so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.(L)
The Law and Sin
7 What shall we say, then?(M) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!(N) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.(O) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”[b](P) 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(Q) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.(R) 9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life(S) actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(T) deceived me,(U) and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.(V)
13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good(W) to bring about my death,(X) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,(Y) sold(Z) as a slave to sin.(AA) 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.(AB) 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.(AC) 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.(AD) 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c](AE) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.(AF) 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.(AG)
21 So I find this law at work:(AH) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being(AI) I delight in God’s law;(AJ) 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war(AK) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin(AL) at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?(AM) 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!(AN)
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,(AO) but in my sinful nature[d] a slave to the law of sin.(AP)

7 Ne znate li, braćo - govorim poznavateljima Zakona - da je čovjek podložan zakonskim odredbama samo za života?
2 Da pojasnim: udanu ženu zakon veže za muža dok je on živ. Ali ako on umre, zakon o braku više se na nju ne odnosi.
3 Kad bi se udala za drugoga za muževa života, počinila bi preljub. Ali ako joj muž umre, taj ju zakon više ne obvezuje i ne čini preljub ako se uda.
4 Tako ni vas, draga braćo, Zakon više ne obvezuje jer ste umrli njegovoj vlasti kad ste s Kristom umrli na križu. Sada ste ujedinjeni s njim koji je uskrsnuo od mrtvih. Zato možete roditi dobrim rodom, to jest dobrim djelima za Boga.
5 Dok je nama još vladala naša stara narav, Zakon je u nama budio grešne želje koje su rodile zlim djelima i donosile smrt.
6 Ali sada smo oslobođeni Zakona jer smo umrli s Kristom i nismo više pod zakonskom stegom. Sada zaista možemo služiti Bogu - ne više na stari način, držeći se slova Zakona, nego na novi način - po Duhu.
Borba s grijehom
7 Znači li to da je Božji zakon grešan? Nipošto! Nije grešan, nego me je upozorio na moj grijeh. Nikada ne bih spoznao da je požuda zlo da Zakon nije rekao: 'Ne poželi!'
8 Ali grijeh je iskoristio priliku zbog Zakona i pobudio u meni svakovrsne zabranjene želje. A bez Zakona grijeh ne bi imao takvu moć.
9 Nekoć nisam razumio što Zakon zahtijeva. Ali kad sam spoznao istinu, shvatio sam da sam prekršio Zakon i da sam grešnik osuđen na smrt.
10 Tako me je dobar Zakon, koji mi je trebao pokazati put života, umjesto toga osudio na smrt.
11 Grijeh je iskoristio Zakon da me prevari; poslužio se dobrim Zakonom da me učini osuđenikom na smrt.
12 Pa ipak, Zakon je svet, pravedan i dobar.
13 Kako je to moguće? Zar me je dobri Zakon natjerao u smrt? Nipošto! Grijeh je iskoristio to što je dobro da na mene navuče smrtnu osudu. Grijeh je dakle najveće zlo: koristi dobre Božje zapovijedi u zle svrhe.
Borba protiv grijeha
14 Zakon je dakle dobar, duhovan. Problem nije u Zakonu, nego u meni jer robujem tjelesnim željama - prodan sam grijehu kao gospodaru.
15 Ne mogu sebe razumjeti: zaista želim činiti dobro, ali ne činim ga. Umjesto toga činim baš ono što mrzim.
16 A to što jako dobro znam da je ono što činim loše, samo pokazuje kako priznajem da je Zakon dobar.
17 Ali ne mogu sebi pomoći jer me grijeh u meni tjera da činim zlo.
18 Znam da nema dobra u meni, to jest u mojoj grešnoj ljudskoj naravi. Sposoban sam htjeti dobro, ali ne i činiti ga.
19 Dobro koje bih htio činiti ne činim, a zlo koje ne bih htio činiti ipak činim.
20 Ali ako činim ono što ne želim, onda to zapravo i ne činim ja, nego grijeh koji je u meni.
21 Zaključujem dakle da vrijedi pravilo: kad želim činiti dobro, nameće mi se zlo.
22 Svim svojim nutarnjim bićem uživam u poslušnosti Božjemu zakonu.
23 Ali još jedan zakon, koji se bori protiv mojega uma, djeluje u mojim udovima i zarobljuje me grijehom koji je još u njima.
24 Bijedna li mene! Tko će me osloboditi od ovoga smrtonosnog tijela, od života u vlasti grijeha?
25 Hvala Bogu! To čini Isus Krist, naš Gospodin. Umom dakle želim služiti Božjemu zakonu, ali zbog grešne naravi svojega tijela robujem grijehu.
