애굽도 앗시리아처럼 망하리라
31 여호야긴 왕이 포로로 잡혀온 지 십일 년째 되는 해 삼월 일일[a]에 주의 말씀이 내게 내렸다. 2 “사람의 아들아, 이집트의 왕 파라오와 그를 따르는 무리들에게 말하여라.
‘너의 힘과 견줄만한 자가 누구겠느냐?
3 앗시리아?
한 때 레바논의 백향목이었던 앗시리아와 같다고 할 수 있을까?
그 아름다운 가지의 그림자는 온 숲을 덮었고
키는 어찌나 큰지 그 꼭대기가 구름을 찔렀었다.
4 강물들이 그를 먹였고
깊은 샘들이 그를 키 큰 나무로 키웠다.
샘에서 흘러나온 물은
시내를 이루어 그 뿌리 사이사이를 흘렀고
물길이 되어 들판에 있는 모든 나무를 돌았다.
5 이렇게 하여 그 나무는
들판의 다른 모든 나무 위로 우뚝 솟아오르고
물이 넉넉하니
굵은 가지들이 움쭉움쭉 늘어나고
잔가지들이 쭉쭉 뻗어 나갔다.
6 하늘의 온갖 새들이 그 굵은 가지에 둥지를 틀고
들판의 온갖 짐승이 그 잔가지 아래에서 새끼를 낳고
위대한 뭇 민족들이 그 그늘 밑에서 살았다.
7 뿌리를 깊이 박아 넉넉한 물길에 닿아 있으니
가지들이 드넓게 펼쳐진 그 나무의 아름다움은 참으로 장엄했다.
8 하나님의 동산에 있는 백향목들은 그 상대가 되지 않았으며
잣나무들도 그것의 굵은 가지들과 견줄 수 없었고
버즘나무들도 그 잔가지들만 못하였다.
하나님의 동산에 있는 어떤 나무도 그 아름다움과 겨룰 수 없었다.
9 나는 그 나무를 가지 많은 아름다운 나무로 만들어서
하나님의 동산 에덴에 있는 모든 나무의 부러움을 사게 하였다.
10 그러므로 나 주 하나님이 말한다. 그 나무는 훌쩍 큰 키로 숲의 모든 나무 위로 우뚝 솟아올랐다. 그 나무는 키가 크다고 교만해졌다. 11 그래서 나는 그 나무를 뭇 민족을 다스리는 자에게 넘겨주었다. 그것은 그 다스리는 자가 나무가 저지른 악한 짓에 따라 벌하게 하려는 것이었다. 나는 그 나무를 내버렸다. 12 그랬더니 뭇 민족 가운데서도 가장 무자비한 민족이 그것을 베어서 버렸다. 굵은 가지 잔가지 할 것 없이 모두 잘려나간 채, 산과 골짜기 여기저기에 너저분하게 나뒹굴었다. 그러자 이 세상의 모든 민족들이 그 그늘 밑에서 나와 나무를 버리고 떠났다. 13 하늘의 온갖 새들이 그 쓰러진 나무에 깃들이고 들판의 온갖 짐승이 그 잔가지들 속으로 기어들었다. 14 그러므로 물가에 사는 다른 어떤 나무도, 그 나무처럼 숲의 다른 나무들 위로 머리를 들고 자랑스럽게 우뚝 솟지 못하게 하여라. 넉넉한 물을 먹고 사는 다른 어떤 나무도, 그렇게 높이 자라지 못하게 하여라. 모두가 죽음의 손에 넘겨져, 이 세상의 모든 교만한 자들과 더불어 땅 속 깊은 구덩이로 들어가도록 정해져 있기 때문이다.
15 나 주 하나님의 말이다. 그 나무가 무덤으로 들어가는 날, 나는 깊은 물로 그 무덤을 덮고 물줄기를 멈추게 하니, 넉넉하던 물이 말라버렸다. 내가 그 나무를 위하여 레바논을 슬픔으로 뒤덮으니, 들판의 모든 나무가 시들어버렸다. 16 나는 그를 그와 같이 교만한 자들과 더불어 무덤으로 내려보냈다. 그러자 그가 쓰러지는 소리에 뭇 민족이 무서워 떨었다. 그러자 에덴의 모든 나무들과 레바논에 있는 나무들 가운데서, 가장 좋고 가장 훌륭한 나무들과 넉넉한 물을 먹고 자란 나무들이 땅 밑에서 위로를 받았다. 17 그 나무의 그늘 아래 살던 뭇 민족과 그와 동맹을 맺었던 나라들이, 그와 함께 무덤으로 내려가서, 이미 칼에 맞아 죽어서 미리 와 있던 자들과 함께 있게 되었다.
18 에덴의 어떤 나무가 그 화려함과 크기를 너와 견줄 수 있겠느냐? 그러나 너 또한 에덴의 나무들과 함께 땅속으로 끌려 내려가서, 할례 받지 못한 자들과 칼에 찔려 죽은 자들과 함께 누울 것이다.
이 자들은 바로와 그의 모든 무리들이다. 나 주가 그렇게 말한다.’”

Pharaoh as a Felled Cedar of Lebanon
31 In the eleventh year,(A) in the third month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me:(B) 2 “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his hordes:
“‘Who can be compared with you in majesty?
3 Consider Assyria,(C) once a cedar in Lebanon,(D)
with beautiful branches overshadowing the forest;
it towered on high,
its top above the thick foliage.(E)
4 The waters(F) nourished it,
deep springs made it grow tall;
their streams flowed
all around its base
and sent their channels
to all the trees of the field.(G)
5 So it towered higher(H)
than all the trees of the field;
its boughs increased
and its branches grew long,
spreading because of abundant waters.(I)
6 All the birds of the sky
nested in its boughs,
all the animals of the wild
gave birth(J) under its branches;
all the great nations
lived in its shade.(K)
7 It was majestic in beauty,
with its spreading boughs,
for its roots went down
to abundant waters.(L)
8 The cedars(M) in the garden of God
could not rival it,
nor could the junipers
equal its boughs,
nor could the plane trees(N)
compare with its branches—
no tree in the garden of God
could match its beauty.(O)
9 I made it beautiful
with abundant branches,
the envy of all the trees of Eden(P)
in the garden of God.(Q)
10 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because the great cedar towered over the thick foliage, and because it was proud(R) of its height, 11 I gave it into the hands of the ruler of the nations, for him to deal with according to its wickedness. I cast it aside,(S) 12 and the most ruthless of foreign nations(T) cut it down and left it. Its boughs fell on the mountains and in all the valleys;(U) its branches lay broken in all the ravines of the land. All the nations of the earth came out from under its shade and left it.(V) 13 All the birds settled on the fallen tree, and all the wild animals lived among its branches.(W) 14 Therefore no other trees by the waters are ever to tower proudly on high, lifting their tops above the thick foliage. No other trees so well-watered are ever to reach such a height; they are all destined(X) for death,(Y) for the earth below, among mortals who go down to the realm of the dead.(Z)
15 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day it was brought down to the realm of the dead I covered the deep springs with mourning for it; I held back its streams, and its abundant waters were restrained. Because of it I clothed Lebanon with gloom, and all the trees of the field withered away.(AA) 16 I made the nations tremble(AB) at the sound of its fall when I brought it down to the realm of the dead to be with those who go down to the pit. Then all the trees(AC) of Eden,(AD) the choicest and best of Lebanon, the well-watered trees, were consoled(AE) in the earth below.(AF) 17 They too, like the great cedar, had gone down to the realm of the dead, to those killed by the sword,(AG) along with the armed men who lived in its shade among the nations.
18 “‘Which of the trees of Eden can be compared with you in splendor and majesty? Yet you, too, will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth below; you will lie among the uncircumcised,(AH) with those killed by the sword.
“‘This is Pharaoh and all his hordes, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”
