Numărătoarea poporului
21 Satana(A) s-a sculat împotriva lui Israel şi a aţâţat pe David să facă numărătoarea lui Israel. 2 Şi David a zis lui Ioab şi căpeteniilor poporului: „Duceţi-vă de faceţi numărătoarea lui Israel de la Beer-Şeba până la Dan şi spuneţi-mi, ca să ştiu la cât se ridică(B) numărul poporului.” 3 Ioab a răspuns: „Domnul să facă pe poporul Lui încă de o sută de ori pe atâta! Împărate, domnul meu, nu sunt ei toţi slujitori ai domnului meu? Dar pentru ce cere domnul meu lucrul acesta? Pentru ce să faci pe Israel să păcătuiască astfel?” 4 Împăratul a stăruit în porunca pe care o dădea lui Ioab. Şi Ioab a plecat şi a străbătut tot Israelul, apoi s-a întors la Ierusalim. 5 Ioab a dat lui David cartea numărătorii poporului: în tot Israelul erau o mie de mii şi o sută de mii de bărbaţi în stare să scoată sabia, iar în Iuda erau patru sute şaptezeci de mii de bărbaţi în stare să scoată sabia. 6 Între ei n-a numărat şi pe Levi şi Beniamin(C), căci porunca împăratului i se părea o urâciune.
Ciuma
7 Porunca aceasta n-a plăcut lui Dumnezeu, care a lovit pe Israel. 8 Şi David a zis lui Dumnezeu: „Am săvârşit un mare păcat(D) făcând lucrul acesta! Acum, iartă(E) fărădelegea robului Tău, căci am lucrat în totul ca un nebun!” 9 Domnul a vorbit astfel lui Gad, văzătorul(F) lui David: 10 „Du-te şi spune lui David: ‘Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Îţi pun înainte trei urgii; alege una din ele, şi te voi lovi cu ea».’ ” 11 Gad s-a dus la David şi i-a zis: „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ‘Primeşte 12 sau trei(G) ani de foamete, sau trei luni în timpul cărora să fii nimicit de potrivnicii tăi şi atins de sabia vrăjmaşilor tăi, sau trei zile în timpul cărora sabia Domnului şi ciuma să fie în ţară şi îngerul Domnului să ducă nimicirea în tot ţinutul lui Israel. Vezi acum ce trebuie să răspund Celui ce mă trimite’.” 13 David a răspuns lui Gad: „Sunt într-o mare strâmtorare! Să cad în mâinile Domnului, căci îndurările Lui sunt nemărginite, dar să nu cad în mâinile oamenilor!” 14 Domnul a trimis ciuma în Israel şi au căzut şaptezeci de mii de oameni din Israel. 15 Dumnezeu a trimis un înger(H) la Ierusalim ca să-l nimicească şi, pe când îl nimicea, Domnul S-a uitat şi I-a părut(I) rău de răul acesta, şi a zis îngerului care nimicea: „Destul! Acum, trage-ţi mâna înapoi!” Îngerul Domnului stătea lângă aria lui Ornan, Iebusitul. 16 David a ridicat ochii şi a văzut(J) pe îngerul Domnului stând între pământ şi cer şi ţinând în mână sabia scoasă şi întoarsă împotriva Ierusalimului. Atunci, David şi bătrânii, înveliţi cu saci, au căzut cu faţa la pământ. 17 Şi David a zis lui Dumnezeu: „Oare n-am poruncit eu numărătoarea poporului? Eu am păcătuit şi am făcut răul acesta, dar oile acestea ce au făcut oare? Doamne, Dumnezeul meu, mâna Ta să fie dar peste mine şi peste casa tatălui meu şi să nu piardă pe poporul Tău!” 18 Îngerul(K) Domnului a spus lui Gad să vorbească lui David, să se suie să ridice un altar Domnului în aria lui Ornan, Iebusitul. 19 David s-a suit, după cuvântul pe care-l spusese Gad în Numele Domnului. 20 Ornan s-a întors şi a văzut îngerul, şi cei patru fii ai lui s-au ascuns împreună cu el: treiera grâul atunci. 21 Când a ajuns David la Ornan, Ornan s-a uitat şi a zărit pe David, apoi a ieşit din arie şi s-a închinat înaintea lui David, cu faţa la pământ. 22 David a zis lui Ornan: „Dă-mi locul ariei să zidesc în el un altar Domnului; dă-mi-l pe preţul lui în argint, ca să se depărteze urgia de deasupra poporului.” 23 Ornan a răspuns lui David: „Ia-l şi să facă domnul meu împăratul ce va crede; iată eu dau boii pentru arderea-de-tot, carele în loc de lemne şi grâul pentru darul de mâncare, toate le dau.” 24 Dar împăratul David a zis lui Ornan: „Nu! Vreau să-l cumpăr pe preţul lui în argint, căci nu voi da Domnului ce este al tău şi nu voi aduce o ardere-de-tot care să nu mă coste nimic.” 25 Şi David a dat(L) lui Ornan şase sute de sicli de aur pentru locul ariei. 26 David a zidit acolo un altar Domnului şi a adus arderi-de-tot şi jertfe de mulţumire. A chemat pe Domnul şi Domnul i-a răspuns prin foc(M), care s-a pogorât din cer pe altarul arderii-de-tot. 27 Atunci, Domnul a vorbit îngerului, care şi-a vârât iarăşi sabia în teacă. 28 Pe vremea aceasta, David, văzând că Domnul îl ascultase în aria lui Ornan, Iebusitul, aducea jertfe acolo. 29 Dar locaşul(N) Domnului, făcut de Moise în pustie, şi altarul arderilor-de-tot erau atunci pe înălţimea Gabaonului. 30 David(O) nu putea să meargă înaintea acestui altar să caute pe Dumnezeu, pentru că îl înspăimântase sabia îngerului Domnului.

David’s Military Census
21 Satan[a](A) rose up against Israel and incited David(B) to count the people of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count Israel from Beer-sheba to Dan and bring a report to me so I can know their number.”(C)
3 Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply the number of his people a hundred times over!(D) My lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
4 Yet the king’s order prevailed over Joab. So Joab left and traveled throughout Israel and then returned to Jerusalem. 5 Joab gave the total troop registration to David. In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand armed men[b] and in Judah itself four hundred seventy thousand armed men. 6 But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the count because the king’s command was detestable to him. 7 This command was also evil in God’s sight, so he afflicted Israel.
8 David said to God, “I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing. Now, please take away your servant’s guilt, for I’ve been very foolish.”(E)
David’s Punishment
9 Then(F) the Lord instructed Gad,(G) David’s seer,(H) 10 “Go and say to David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them for yourself, and I will do it to you.’”
11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice: 12 three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes with the sword of your enemy overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the Lord—a plague on the land, the angel of the Lord bringing destruction to the whole territory of Israel.’ Now decide what answer I should take back to the one who sent me.”
13 David answered Gad, “I’m in anguish. Please, let me fall into the Lord’s hands because his mercies are very great,(I) but don’t let me fall into human hands.”
14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelite men died. 15 Then God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but when the angel was about to destroy the city,[c] the Lord looked, relented concerning the destruction,(J) and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough, withdraw your hand now!” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Ornan[d] the Jebusite.
16 When David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven, with his drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem, David and the elders, covered in sackcloth,(K) fell facedown. 17 David said to God, “Wasn’t I the one who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has sinned and acted very wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Lord my God, please let your hand be against me and against my father’s family, but don’t let the plague be against your people.”
David’s Altar
18 So the angel of the Lord ordered Gad(L) to tell David to go and set up an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.(M) 19 David went up at Gad’s command spoken in the name of the Lord.
20 Ornan was threshing wheat when he turned and saw the angel. His four sons, who were with him, hid. 21 David came to Ornan, and when Ornan looked and saw David, he left the threshing floor and bowed to David with his face to the ground.
22 Then David said to Ornan, “Give me this threshing-floor plot so that I may build an altar to the Lord on it. Give it to me for the full price, so the plague on the people may be stopped.”
23 Ornan said to David, “Take it! My lord the king may do whatever he wants.[e] See, I give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering—I give it all.”
24 King David answered Ornan, “No, I insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the Lord what belongs to you or offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
25 So David gave Ornan fifteen pounds of gold[f] for the plot. 26 He built an altar to the Lord there and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and he answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.(N)
27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, David offered sacrifices there when he saw that the Lord answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at the high place in Gibeon,(O) 30 but David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was terrified of the sword of the Lord’s angel.
