⁷ But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him. Humans do not see what the Lord sees,^[a] for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.’^(A)

⁸ And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he also did to us.^(A)

²³ I will strike her children dead.^[a](A) Then all the churches will know that I am the one who examines minds and hearts,^(B) and I will give to each of you according to your works.^(C)
