³⁵ I will choose a faithful priest who shall do what I have in heart and mind. I will establish a lasting house for him and he shall serve in the presence of my anointed forever.

⁹ Samuel therefore took an unweaned lamb and offered it whole as a burnt offering to the Lord.^(A) He cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him.

¹⁰ While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near for battle with Israel. That day, however, the Lord thundered loudly against the Philistines, and threw them into such confusion that they were defeated by Israel.^(A)

⁸ He waited seven days, until the appointed time Samuel had set, but Samuel did not come, and the army deserted Saul.^{(A) 9} He then said, “Bring me the burnt offering and communion offerings!” Then he sacrificed the burnt offering.

King Saul Reproved. ¹⁰ As he finished sacrificing the burnt offering, there came Samuel! So Saul went out toward him in order to greet him.

¹⁶ But the Lord raised up judges to save them from the power of their plunderers;
