³ that we would each eat the flesh of our sons and the flesh of our daughters.^{(A) 4} He made them subject to all the kingdoms around us, to be an object of scorn and a desolation among all the surrounding peoples, where the Lord has scattered them.^{(B) 5} They were brought down and not raised up, because we sinned against the Lord our God and did not listen to his voice.^(C)
