The Song of Moses

15 Then Moses and the people of Israel ^(A)sang this song to the Lord, saying,

^(B)“I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
    the horse and his rider^[a] he has thrown into the sea.
²^(C)The Lord is my strength and my ^(D)song,
    and he has become ^(E)my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him,
    ^(F)my father's God, and ^(G)I will exalt him.
³The Lord is ^(H)a man of war;
    ^(I)the Lord is his name.

⁴^(J)“Pharaoh's chariots and his host he cast into the sea,
    and his chosen ^(K)officers were sunk in the Red Sea.
⁵The ^(L)floods covered them;
    they ^(M)went down into the depths like a stone.
⁶^(N)Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power,
    your right hand, O Lord, ^(O)shatters the enemy.
⁷In the ^(P)greatness of your majesty you overthrow your adversaries;
    you send out your fury; it ^(Q)consumes them like stubble.
⁸At the ^(R)blast of your nostrils the waters piled up;
    the ^(S)floods stood up in a heap;
    the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.
⁹The enemy said, ^(T)‘I will pursue, I will overtake,
    I ^(U)will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them.
    I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’
¹⁰You ^(V)blew with your wind; the ^(W)sea covered them;
    they sank like lead in the mighty waters.

¹¹^(X)“Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?
    Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
    awesome in ^(Y)glorious deeds, ^(Z)doing wonders?
¹²You stretched out ^(AA)your right hand;
    the earth swallowed them.

¹³“You have ^(AB)led in your steadfast love the people whom ^(AC)you have redeemed;
    you have ^(AD)guided them by your strength to your holy abode.
¹⁴^(AE)The peoples have heard; they tremble;
    pangs have seized the inhabitants of Philistia.
¹⁵Now are the chiefs of Edom ^(AF)dismayed;
    trembling seizes the leaders of ^(AG)Moab;
    ^(AH)all the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.
¹⁶Terror and ^(AI)dread fall upon them;
    because of the greatness of your arm, they are still ^(AJ)as a stone,
till your people, O Lord, pass by,
    till the people pass by whom ^(AK)you have purchased.
¹⁷You will bring them in and ^(AL)plant them on your own mountain,
    the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode,
    ^(AM)the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established.
¹⁸^(AN)The Lord will reign forever and ever.”

¹⁹For when ^(AO)the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, ^(AP)the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. ²⁰Then ^(AQ)Miriam ^(AR)the prophetess, the ^(AS)sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and ^(AT)all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. ²¹And Miriam sang to them:

^(AU)“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;

The Lord Is My Rock and My Fortress

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, ^(A)the servant of the Lord, ^(B)who addressed the words of this ^(C)song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:

18 I love you, O Lord, my strength.
²The Lord is my ^(D)rock and my ^(E)fortress and my deliverer,
    my God, my ^(F)rock, in ^(G)whom I take refuge,
    my ^(H)shield, and ^(I)the horn of my salvation, my ^(J)stronghold.
³I call upon the Lord, who is ^(K)worthy to be praised,
    and I am saved from my enemies.

⁴^(L)The cords of death encompassed me;
^(M)the torrents of destruction assailed me;^[a]
⁵^(N)the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.

⁶^(O)In my distress I called upon the Lord;
to my God I cried for help.
From his ^(P)temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.

⁷Then the earth ^(Q)reeled and rocked;
    the foundations also of the mountains trembled
    and quaked, because he was angry.
⁸Smoke went up from his nostrils,^[b]
    and devouring ^(R)fire from his mouth;
    glowing coals flamed forth from him.
⁹He ^(S)bowed the heavens and ^(T)came down;
    ^(U)thick darkness was under his feet.
¹⁰He rode on a cherub and flew;
    he came swiftly on ^(V)the wings of the wind.
¹¹He made darkness his covering, his ^(W)canopy around him,
    thick clouds ^(X)dark with water.
¹²Out of the brightness before him
    ^(Y)hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.

¹³The Lord also ^(Z)thundered in the heavens,
    and the Most High uttered his ^(AA)voice,
    hailstones and coals of fire.
¹⁴And he sent out his ^(AB)arrows and scattered them;
    he flashed forth lightnings and ^(AC)routed them.
¹⁵Then ^(AD)the channels of the sea were seen,
    and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your ^(AE)rebuke, O Lord,
    at the blast of ^(AF)the breath of your nostrils.

¹⁶He ^(AG)sent from on high, he took me;
    he ^(AH)drew me out of ^(AI)many waters.
¹⁷He rescued me from my strong enemy
    and from those who hated me,
    for they were ^(AJ)too mighty for me.
¹⁸They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
    but the Lord was my support.
¹⁹He brought me out into ^(AK)a broad place;
    he rescued me, because he ^(AL)delighted in me.

²⁰The Lord dealt with me ^(AM)according to my righteousness;
    according to ^(AN)the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
²¹For I have ^(AO)kept the ways of the Lord,
    and have not wickedly departed from my God.
²²For ^(AP)all his rules^[c] were before me,
    and his statutes I did not put away from me.
²³I was ^(AQ)blameless before him,
    and I kept myself from my guilt.
²⁴So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

²⁵With ^(AR)the merciful you show yourself merciful;
    with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
²⁶with the purified you show yourself pure;
    and with ^(AS)the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
²⁷For you save ^(AT)a humble people,
    but ^(AU)the haughty eyes you bring down.
²⁸For it is you who light my ^(AV)lamp;
    the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
²⁹For by you I can run against a troop,
    and by my God I can ^(AW)leap over ^(AX)a wall.
³⁰This God—his way is ^(AY)perfect;^[d]
    the word of the Lord ^(AZ)proves true;
    he is ^(BA)a shield for all those who ^(BB)take refuge in him.

³¹For ^(BC)who is God, but the Lord?
    And who is ^(BD)a rock, except our God?—
³²the God who ^(BE)equipped me with strength
    and made my way ^(BF)blameless.
³³He made my feet like the feet of a ^(BG)deer
    and set me secure on ^(BH)the heights.
³⁴He ^(BI)trains my hands for war,
    so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
³⁵You have given me the shield of your salvation,
    and your right hand ^(BJ)supported me,
    and your ^(BK)gentleness made me great.
³⁶You ^(BL)gave a wide place for my steps under me,
    and my feet did not slip.
³⁷I pursued my enemies and overtook them,
    and did not turn back till they were consumed.
³⁸I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise;
    they fell under my feet.
³⁹For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
    you made those who rise against me sink under me.
⁴⁰You made my enemies ^(BM)turn their backs to me,^[e]
    and those who hated me I destroyed.
⁴¹^(BN)They cried for help, but there was none to save;
    they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
⁴²I beat them fine as ^(BO)dust before the wind;

⁴³You delivered me from ^(BQ)strife with the people;
    you made me ^(BR)the head of the nations;
    ^(BS)people whom I had not known served me.
⁴⁴As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me;
    ^(BT)foreigners ^(BU)came cringing to me.
⁴⁵^(BV)Foreigners lost heart
    and ^(BW)came trembling out of their fortresses.

⁴⁶The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
    and exalted be the God of my salvation—
⁴⁷the God who gave me vengeance
    and ^(BX)subdued peoples under me,
⁴⁸who rescued me from my enemies;
    yes, you ^(BY)exalted me above those who rose against me;
    you delivered me from ^(BZ)the man of violence.

⁴⁹^(CA)For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
    and ^(CB)sing to your name.
⁵⁰Great ^(CC)salvation he brings to his king,
    and shows steadfast love to his ^(CD)anointed,
    to ^(CE)David and his offspring forever.

Mary's Song of Praise: The Magnificat

⁴⁶And Mary said,

^(A)“My ^(B)soul ^(C)magnifies the Lord,
⁴⁷    ^(D)and my ^(E)spirit rejoices in ^(F)God my Savior,
⁴⁸for ^(G)he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
    For behold, from now on all generations ^(H)will call me blessed;
⁴⁹for ^(I)he who is mighty ^(J)has done great things for me,
    and ^(K)holy is his name.
⁵⁰And ^(L)his mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.
⁵¹^(M)He has shown strength with his arm;
    ^(N)he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
⁵²^(O)he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
    ^(P)and exalted those of humble estate;

Paul and Silas in Prison

¹⁶As we were going to ^(A)the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had ^(B)a spirit of ^(C)divination and ^(D)brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. ¹⁷She followed Paul and us, ^(E)crying out, “These men are ^(F)servants of ^(G)the Most High God, who proclaim to you ^(H)the way of salvation.” ¹⁸And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, ^(I)“I command you ^(J)in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And ^(K)it came out that very hour.

¹⁹But ^(L)when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and ^(M)dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers. ²⁰And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city. ²¹They ^(N)advocate customs that are not lawful for us ^(O)as Romans to accept or practice.” ²²The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders ^(P)to beat them with rods. ²³And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. ²⁴Having received this order, he put them into the inner ^(Q)prison and fastened their feet in ^(R)the stocks.

The Philippian Jailer Converted

²⁵^(S)About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, ²⁶and suddenly ^(T)there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately ^(U)all the doors were opened, and ^(V)everyone's bonds were unfastened. ²⁷When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and ^(W)was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. ²⁸But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” ²⁹And the jailer^[a] called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he ^(X)fell down before Paul and Silas. ³⁰Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, ^(Y)what must I do to be ^(Z)saved?” ³¹And they said, ^(AA)“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you ^(AB)and your household.” ³²And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. ³³And he took them ^(AC)the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he ^(AD)was baptized at once, he and all his family. ³⁴Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he ^(AE)rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.

³⁵But when it was day, the magistrates sent the police, saying, “Let those men go.” ³⁶And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace.” ³⁷But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us publicly, ^(AF)uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.” ³⁸The police reported these words to the magistrates, and ^(AG)they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens. ³⁹So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and ^(AH)asked them to leave the city. ⁴⁰So they went out of the prison and visited ^(AI)Lydia. And when they had seen ^(AJ)the brothers, they encouraged them and departed.
