¹² The Lord said to Moses, ‘Come up to me on the mountain and stay there so that I may give you the stone tablets^(A) with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.’

¹⁵ Then Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides – inscribed front and back. ¹⁶ The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was God’s writing, engraved on the tablets.^(A)

¹³ He declared his covenant^(A) to you. He commanded you to follow the Ten Commandments,^(B) which he wrote on two stone tablets.^(C)

The People’s Response

²² ‘The Lord spoke these commands in a loud voice to your entire assembly from the fire, cloud, and total darkness on the mountain; he added nothing more. He wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.

³ You show that you are Christ’s letter,^(A) delivered^[a] by us, not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God^(B) – not on tablets of stone^(C) but on tablets of human hearts.^[b](D)
