⁶ ‘Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the forced labour of the Egyptians and rescue you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm^(A) and great acts of judgement.

⁷ ‘When a man sells his daughter as a concubine,^[a] she is not to leave as the male slaves do.^{(A) 8} If she is displeasing to her master, who chose her for himself, then he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners because he has acted treacherously towards her. ⁹ Or if he chooses her for his son, he must deal with her according to the customary treatment of daughters. ¹⁰ If he takes an additional wife, he must not reduce the food, clothing, or marital rights of the first wife.^{(B) 11} And if he does not do these three things for her, she may leave free of charge, without any payment.^[b]

²⁹ No person who has been set apart for destruction is to be ransomed; he must be put to death.^(A)

²³ If there is a young woman who is a virgin engaged to a man, and another man encounters her in the city and sleeps with her, ²⁴ take the two of them out to the gate of that city and stone them to death – the young woman because she did not cry out in the city and the man because he has violated his neighbour’s fiancée. You must purge the evil from you. ²⁵ But if the man encounters an engaged woman in the open country, and he seizes and rapes her, only the man who raped her must die. ²⁶ Do nothing to the young woman, because she is not guilty of an offence deserving death. This case is just like one in which a man attacks his neighbour and murders him. ²⁷ When he found her in the field, the engaged woman cried out, but there was no one to rescue her.
