¹³ Then the Lord said to Abram,^(A) ‘Know this for certain: your offspring will be resident foreigners^(B) for four hundred years^(C) in a land that does not belong to them and will be enslaved and oppressed.^[a]

Moses in Midian

¹¹ Years later,^[a] after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people^[b] and observed their forced labour.^(A) He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his people.

⁷ Then the Lord said, ‘I have observed the misery of my people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out^(A) because of their oppressors. I know about their sufferings,

⁴ The king of Egypt said to them, ‘Moses and Aaron, why are you causing the people to neglect their work? Get to your labour! ’ ⁵ Pharaoh also said, ‘Look, the people of the land are so numerous, and you would stop them from their labour.’^(A)

⁶ ‘Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the forced labour of the Egyptians and rescue you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm^(A) and great acts of judgement.

⁶ But the Egyptians mistreated and oppressed us, and forced us to do hard labour.
