¹³ Then the Lord said to Abram,^(A) ‘Know this for certain: your offspring will be resident foreigners^(B) for four hundred years^(C) in a land that does not belong to them and will be enslaved and oppressed.^{[a] 14} However, I will judge the nation they serve,^(D) and afterwards they will go out with many possessions.^{(E) 15} But you will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age.^{(F) 16} In the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.’^[b](G)

⁶ God spoke in this way: His descendants would be strangers in a foreign country, and they would enslave and oppress them for four hundred years.

¹⁷ My point is this: The law, which came 430 years later,^(A) does not invalidate a covenant previously established by God^[a] and thus cancel the promise.
