The Message
1 I, James, am a slave of God and the Master Jesus, writing to the twelve tribes scattered to Kingdom Come: Hello!
Faith Under Pressure
2-4 Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.
5-8 If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.
9-11 When down-and-outers get a break, cheer! And when the arrogant rich are brought down to size, cheer! Prosperity is as short-lived as a wildflower, so don’t ever count on it. You know that as soon as the sun rises, pouring down its scorching heat, the flower withers. Its petals wilt and, before you know it, that beautiful face is a barren stem. Well, that’s a picture of the “prosperous life.” At the very moment everyone is looking on in admiration, it fades away to nothing.
12 Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life.
13-15 Don’t let anyone under pressure to give in to evil say, “God is trying to trip me up.” God is impervious to evil, and puts evil in no one’s way. The temptation to give in to evil comes from us and only us. We have no one to blame but the leering, seducing flare-up of our own lust. Lust gets pregnant, and has a baby: sin! Sin grows up to adulthood, and becomes a real killer.
16-18 So, my very dear friends, don’t get thrown off course. Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. He brought us to life using the true Word, showing us off as the crown of all his creatures.
Act on What You Hear
19-21 Post this at all the intersections, dear friends: Lead with your ears, follow up with your tongue, and let anger straggle along in the rear. God’s righteousness doesn’t grow from human anger. So throw all spoiled virtue and cancerous evil in the garbage. In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life.
22-24 Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.
25 But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!—even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action.
26-27 Anyone who sets himself up as “religious” by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.

1 Ya’akov, eved (servant) of Hashem and of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Adoneinu Yehoshua; To the Shneym Asar HaShevatim (Twelve Tribes) in the Golus, Shalom! [DEVARIM 32:26]
2 Consider it all simcha, my Achim b’Moshiach, whenever you fall into various nisayonos (tests, trials),
3 Because you have da’as that the emunah you have, when it is tested, produces savlanut (patient endurance).
4 And let savlanut be shleimah in its po’al (work) in order that you may be mevugarim (mature, grown up) and complete, lacking in nothing.
5 But if any one of you is lacking chochmah (wisdom), let him direct tefillah (prayer) and techinot (petitions) to Hashem, the One whose matanot (gifts) are given generously and without grudging, and chochmah will be given to him. [MELACHIM ALEF 3:9,10; MISHLE 2:3-6; TEHILLIM 51:6; DANIEL 1:17; 2:21]
6 But let the tefillah be offered with much bitachon in emunah (faith), in no way doubting. For the doubtful man, wavering in emunah, is like a wave of the yam (sea) being tossed by the wind. [MELACHIM ALEF 18:21]
7 Let not such a one presume that he will receive anything from Adoneinu.
8 He is an ish (man) of double mind, in all his drakhim (ways), mesupak (uncertain, having doubts) and unstable. [TEHILLIM 119:113]
9 But let the Ach b’Moshiach of shiflut (lowliness) glory in the da’as that Hashem will exalt him.
10 And let the Ach b’Moshiach who has osher (riches) glory in his bizyoinos (humiliation), in the da’as that Hashem will bring him low, because KOL HABASAR KHATZIR ("All flesh is grass," YESHAYAH 40:6,7) and so he likewise will vanish. [IYOV 14:2; TEHILLIM 103:15,16]
11 For the shemesh (sun) rises with its burning heat and dried the grass and its TZITZ NAVEL ("flower blossom falls" YESHAYAH 40:6-8) And the beauty of its appearance perished, so also the “oisher” (rich man) in his goings will fade away. [TEHILLIM 102:4,11]
12 Ashrey is the one who stands up under nisayon (trial), because, having become approved, that one will be given the Ateret HaChayyim (Crown of Life), which Hashem gave as a havtachah (promise) to those having Ahavas Hashem.
13 However, let no one say, when he is tempted, "From Hashem I am being tempted,” for Hashem cannot be tempted to crave ra’ah (evil), and He Himself trips up no one with nisayon (temptation).
14 But each one is tempted by his own ta’avah (lust, yetzer hara), being dragged off by it and being allured. [MISHLE 19:3]
15 Then after her conception Ta’avah gives birth to Averah (Transgression) and Averah, once she has fully developed, gives birth to Mavet. [BERESHIS 3:6; IYOV 15:35; TEHILLIM 7:14; YESHAYAH 59:4]
16 Do not fall under a delusion, my beloved Achim b’Moshiach.
17 Every good endowment and every matanah shleimah (complete gift) is from above, coming down from Avi HaOhrot (the Father of Lights) with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. [TEHILLIM 85:12; BERESHIS 1:16; TEHILLIM 136:7; DANIEL 2:22; BAMIDBAR 23:19; TEHILLIM 102:27; MALACHI 3:6]
18 Birtzon Hashem (by the will of G-d), he gave birth to us by the Dvar HaEmes, that we might be a kind of bikkurim (firstfruits) of all he created. [YIRMEYAH 2:3]
19 Have da’as of this, my beloved Achim b’Moshiach. Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to ka’as (anger). [MISHLE 10:19]
20 For the ka’as of Bnei Adam does not accomplish the Tzikat Hashem.
21 Therefore, having put away all filthiness and what remains of resha (wickedness) in shiflut (lowliness) and meekness receive the implanted Dvar Hashem which is able to save your nefashot.[Rev 3:20]
22 Now be Shomrei HaDvar Hashem and not Shomei HaDvar only, thereby causing yourselves to fall under remiyah (deceit, deception).
23 Because if anyone is Shomei HaDavar and not Shomrei HaDavar, this one is like a man looking at his ponum in a mirror,
24 For he observed himself and has gone away and immediately forgot what he looked like.
25 But the one having peered into the Torah HaShleimah (the Perfect Torah), the Torah HaCherut (the Torah of Freedom), and there remaining, not as a forgetful listener but one who is shomer mitzvot and goes into action, this one will have a bracha on his head in all his acts. [TEHILLIM 19:7]
26 If anyone considers himself to be one of the Charedim (Orthodox, G-dfearing Jewish religious ones), yet has lashon hora and does not bridle his tongue but instead causes his lev to fall under remiyah (deceit), this one’s chasidus (piety) is worthless. [TEHILLIM 34:13; 39:1; 141:3]
27 Avodas Kodesh that is tehorah (pure) and tamimah (unblemished) before Elohim HaAv is this: to visit yetomim (orphans) and almanot (widows) in their tzoros and to be shomer against the defilement of the Olam Hazeh. [DEVARIM 14:29; IYOV 31:16,17,21; TEHILLIM 146:9; YESHAYAH 1:17,23]

1 James,(A) a servant of God(B) and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes(C) scattered(D) among the nations:
Greetings.(E)
Trials and Temptations
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds,(F) 3 because you know that the testing of your faith(G) produces perseverance.(H) 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature(I) and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,(J) who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.(K) 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt,(L) because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded(M) and unstable(N) in all they do.
9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.(O) 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.(P) 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat(Q) and withers(R) the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed.(S) In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial(T) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life(U) that the Lord has promised to those who love him.(V)
13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own(W) evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;(X) and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.(Y)
16 Don’t be deceived,(Z) my dear brothers and sisters.(AA) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above,(AB) coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,(AC) who does not change(AD) like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth(AE) through the word of truth,(AF) that we might be a kind of firstfruits(AG) of all he created.
Listening and Doing
19 My dear brothers and sisters,(AH) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak(AI) and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger(AJ) does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of(AK) all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you,(AL) which can save you.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.(AM) 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom,(AN) and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.(AO)
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues(AP) deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after(AQ) orphans and widows(AR) in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.(AS)

Il beneficio delle prove
2 Considerate perfetta letizia, miei fratelli, quando subite ogni sorta di prove, 3 sapendo che la prova della vostra fede produce la pazienza. 4 E la pazienza completi l'opera sua in voi, perché siate perfetti e integri, senza mancare di nulla.
La domanda fiduciosa
5 Se qualcuno di voi manca di sapienza, la domandi a Dio, che dona a tutti generosamente e senza rinfacciare, e gli sarà data. 6 La domandi però con fede, senza esitare, perché chi esita somiglia all'onda del mare mossa e agitata dal vento; 7 e non pensi di ricevere qualcosa dal Signore 8 un uomo che ha l'animo oscillante e instabile in tutte le sue azioni.
La sorte del ricco
9 Il fratello di umili condizioni si rallegri della sua elevazione 10 e il ricco della sua umiliazione, perché passerà come fiore d'erba. 11 Si leva il sole col suo ardore e fa seccare l'erba e il suo fiore cade, e la bellezza del suo aspetto svanisce. Così anche il ricco appassirà nelle sue imprese.
La tentazione
12 Beato l'uomo che sopporta la tentazione, perché una volta superata la prova riceverà la corona della vita che il Signore ha promesso a quelli che lo amano.
13 Nessuno, quando è tentato, dica: «Sono tentato da Dio»; perché Dio non può essere tentato dal male e non tenta nessuno al male. 14 Ciascuno piuttosto è tentato dalla propria concupiscenza che lo attrae e lo seduce; 15 poi la concupiscenza concepisce e genera il peccato, e il peccato, quand'è consumato, produce la morte.
Ascoltare la parola e metterla in pratica
16 Non andate fuori strada, fratelli miei carissimi; 17 ogni buon regalo e ogni dono perfetto viene dall'alto e discende dal Padre della luce, nel quale non c'è variazione né ombra di cambiamento. 18 Di sua volontà egli ci ha generati con una parola di verità, perché noi fossimo come una primizia delle sue creature.
19 Lo sapete, fratelli miei carissimi: sia ognuno pronto ad ascoltare, lento a parlare, lento all'ira. 20 Perché l'ira dell'uomo non compie ciò che è giusto davanti a Dio. 21 Perciò, deposta ogni impurità e ogni resto di malizia, accogliete con docilità la parola che è stata seminata in voi e che può salvare le vostre anime. 22 Siate di quelli che mettono in pratica la parola e non soltanto ascoltatori, illudendo voi stessi. 23 Perché se uno ascolta soltanto e non mette in pratica la parola, somiglia a un uomo che osserva il proprio volto in uno specchio: 24 appena s'è osservato, se ne va, e subito dimentica com'era. 25 Chi invece fissa lo sguardo sulla legge perfetta, la legge della libertà, e le resta fedele, non come un ascoltatore smemorato ma come uno che la mette in pratica, questi troverà la sua felicità nel praticarla.
26 Se qualcuno pensa di essere religioso, ma non frena la lingua e inganna così il suo cuore, la sua religione è vana. 27 Una religione pura e senza macchia davanti a Dio nostro Padre è questa: soccorrere gli orfani e le vedove nelle loro afflizioni e conservarsi puri da questo mondo.
