La caída de Jerusalén
39 En el mes décimo del año noveno del reinado de Sedequías rey de Judá, llegó Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y todo su ejército vinieron a Jerusalén y la sitiaron. 2 El día nueve del cuarto mes del año undécimo del reinado de Sedequías, abrieron una brecha en el muro de la ciudad 3 por la que entraron todos los oficiales del rey de Babilonia hasta instalarse en la puerta central de la ciudad: Nergal Sarézer de Samgar, Nebo Sarsequín, un oficial principal, Nergal Sarézer, también un alto funcionario, y todos los otros oficiales del rey de Babilonia.
4 Al verlos, Sedequías rey de Judá y todos sus soldados huyeron de la ciudad. Salieron de noche por el jardín real, por la puerta que está entre los dos muros, tomando el camino del Arabá. 5 Pero el ejército de los babilonios persiguió al rey y le dio alcance a Sedequías en la llanura de Jericó y lo llevaron ante Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, en Riblá, territorio de Jamat, donde dictó sentencia contra Sedequías. 6 Ante los ojos de Sedequías, el rey de Babilonia mandó degollar a los hijos de Sedequías en Riblá e hizo lo mismo con todos los nobles de Judá. 7 Luego hizo que le sacaran los ojos a Sedequías, lo encadenaron y se lo llevaron prisionero a Babilonia.
8 Los babilonios incendiaron el palacio del rey y las casas del pueblo, y derribaron las murallas de Jerusalén. 9 Nabuzaradán, comandante de la guardia, llevó cautivos a Babilonia a todos los que quedaban en la ciudad y a los que habían desertado. 10 Sólo dejó en el territorio de Judá a alguna gente de la más pobre y le dio campos y viñedos.
11 En cuanto a Jeremías, el rey Nabucodonosor le dio la siguiente orden a Nabuzaradán, comandante de la guardia: 12 «Toma a Jeremías bajo tu cuidado, no le hagas ningún daño y satisface todas sus peticiones». 13 Entonces Nabuzaradán, comandante de la guardia, Nebusazbán, un alto oficial del ejército, Nergal Sarézer, un alto funcionario, y todos los demás oficiales del rey de Babilonia, 14 ordenaron sacar a Jeremías del patio de la prisión y lo pusieron en manos de Guedalías[a] hijo de Ajicán, nieto de Safán, para que lo llevara de nuevo a su casa. Así que Jeremías vivió en medio del pueblo.
Mensaje del Señor para Ebedmélec
15 Cuando todavía estaba preso Jeremías en el patio de la prisión, la palabra del SEÑOR vino a él, diciendo: 16 «Ve y dile a Ebedmélec[b], el etíope, que el SEÑOR Todopoderoso, Dios de Israel, dice: “Voy a cumplir el mensaje que anuncié contra esta ciudad, para mal y no para bien. El día que esto suceda, tú serás testigo de ello. 17 Pero en aquel día yo te protegeré, dice el SEÑOR, para que no caigas en manos de esa gente a la que temes”. 18 Puedes tener la seguridad de que yo te libraré, dice el SEÑOR, tu vida será tu botín de guerra por haber confiado en mí».
Jeremías es puesto en libertad
40 Este es el mensaje que el SEÑOR le dio a Jeremías después de que Nabuzaradán, comandante de la guardia lo liberó en Ramá. Allí Nabuzaradán lo había encontrado preso y encadenado entre todos los prisioneros de Jerusalén y de Judá, que iban deportados a Babilonia. 2 El comandante de la guardia tomó aparte a Jeremías y le dijo: «El SEÑOR tu Dios advirtió sobre este desastre contra este lugar. 3 El SEÑOR ahora ha cumplido su amenaza. Todo esto ha ocurrido porque ustedes pecaron contra el SEÑOR y no lo obedecieron. 4 Sin embargo, hoy te libero de las cadenas que te atan las manos. Si quieres venir conmigo a Babilonia, ven, que yo te cuidaré. Pero si no quieres venir, no vengas. Tienes todo el país para ir a donde mejor te parezca. 5 Esta es tu última oportunidad, vuelve junto a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán, nieto de Safán, a quien el rey de Babilonia ha nombrado gobernador de las ciudades de Judá, y quédate con él y con tu pueblo. O ve a donde mejor te parezca».
Entonces el comandante de la guardia le dio provisiones y un regalo, y lo dejó en libertad. 6 Jeremías se fue a donde estaba Guedalías hijo de Ajicán, en Mizpa, y se quedó a vivir con él y con el pueblo que quedaba en el país.
Guedalías gobernador de Judá
(2 R 25:23-24)
7 Todos los oficiales del ejército y sus soldados que aun estaban en el campo se enteraron de que el rey de Babilonia había nombrado a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán gobernador del país y de que lo había puesto a cargo de hombres, mujeres y niños, al igual que de alguna gente pobre que no había sido deportada a Babilonia. 8 Los siguientes hombres fueron a Mizpa y se presentaron ante Guedalías: Ismael hijo de Netanías, Johanán y Jonatán hijos de Carea, Seraías hijo de Tanjumet, los hijos de Efay de Netofa, y Jezanías, hijo de un hombre de Macá, junto con sus soldados.
9 Guedalías hijo de Ajicán, nieto de Safán, les hizo esta promesa a ellos y a sus hombres: «No tengan temor de servir a los babilonios. Quédense aquí y sirvan al rey de Babilonia, y les irá bien. 10 Yo me voy a quedar en Mizpa para representarlos ante los babilonios que vengan aquí. Pero ustedes, almacenen vino, fruta y aceite de oliva, y vivan en las ciudades que han ocupado».
11 Todos los judíos que vivían en Moab, entre los amonitas, en Edom y en todos los otros países, se enteraron de que el rey de Babilonia había dejado un resto en Judá y de que había nombrado gobernador a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán, nieto de Safán. 12 Entonces estos judíos regresaron a la tierra de Judá de los lugares donde estaban dispersos y se presentaron en Mizpa, ante Guedalías. También empezaron a almacenar vino y fruta en abundancia.
13 Johanán hijo de Carea y todos los oficiales del ejército que estaban en el campo se presentaron ante Guedalías, en Mizpa, 14 y le dijeron:
—¿No sabes que Balís, rey de los amonitas, ha enviado a Ismael hijo de Netanías a matarte?
Pero Guedalías hijo de Ajicán no les creyó. 15 Entonces Johanán hijo de Carea le dijo en secreto a Guedalías, en Mizpa:
—Déjame matar a Ismael hijo de Netanías sin que nadie se entere de quién lo hizo. ¿Por qué vamos a permitir que él te mate? Eso causaría que se disperse el pueblo de Judá que se ha reunido ahora y que el resto de Judá sea destruido.
16 Guedalías hijo de Ajicán le dijo a Johanán hijo de Carea:
—No lo hagas, porque lo que dices sobre Ismael no es cierto.
El asesinato de Guedalías

41 En el mes séptimo, Ismael, hijo de Netanías y nieto de Elisama, que era de la familia real y uno de los oficiales del rey, fue con diez de sus hombres a Mizpa para presentarse ante Guedalías hijo de Ajicán. Ismael era miembro de la familia real y había sido uno de los oficiales del rey. Mientras comían juntos en Mizpa, 2 Ismael hijo de Netanías y los diez hombres que estaban con él, agarraron y asesinaron a espada a Guedalías, hijo de Ajicán y nieto de Safán. Así mataron a quien el rey de Babilonia había nombrado gobernador del país. 3 Ismael también mató a todos los judíos que estaban con Guedalías en Mizpa y a los soldados de Babilonia que se encontraban allí.
4 Al día siguiente del asesinato de Guedalías y cuando aun nadie se había dado cuenta de ello, 5 llegaron de Siquén, Siló y Samaria 80 hombres con la barba afeitada, la ropa rasgada y el cuerpo lleno de cortadas que ellos mismos se habían hecho. Traían ofrendas de cereal e incienso, para ofrecerlos al SEÑOR en el templo. 6 Ismael hijo de Netanías salió de Mizpa a saludarlos, llorando por el camino. Al llegar a ellos, les dijo:
—Vengan a ver a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán.
7 Cuando los hombres entraron a la ciudad, Ismael hijo de Netanías y sus hombres los mataron y los echaron a un pozo. 8 Pero diez de esos 80 hombres dijeron:
—¡No nos maten! Tenemos trigo, cebada, aceite de oliva y miel escondidos en el campo.
Ismael se detuvo y no los mató como a sus compañeros. 9 El rey Asá había hecho un pozo cuando Basá, rey de Israel, lo atacó[c], y en ese pozo fue donde Ismael echó los cuerpos de los hombres que había matado cuando se hizo pasar por amigo de Guedalías. Ismael hijo de Netanías lo llenó con los cadáveres. 10 Luego capturó a las hijas del rey y al resto del pueblo que estaba en Mizpa, sobre quienes Nabuzaradán, comandante de la guardia, había nombrado a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán como gobernador. Ismael hijo de Netanías los capturó y huyó hacia donde estaban los amonitas.
11 Johanán hijo de Carea y todos los jefes militares que estaban con él se enteraron del crimen que había cometido Ismael hijo de Netanías, 12 reunieron a sus hombres y fueron a pelear contra él. Lo encontraron cerca del gran estanque que está en Gabaón. 13 Cuando el pueblo que Ismael tenía prisionero vio a Johanán hijo de Carea y a los oficiales de su ejército que estaban con él, se alegraron mucho. 14 Así que todo el pueblo que Ismael había capturado en Mizpa se dio vuelta y se fue con Johanán hijo de Carea. 15 Pero Ismael hijo de Netanías y ocho de sus hombres escaparon de Johanán y se fueron con los amonitas.
16 Entonces Johanán hijo de Carea y los oficiales de su ejército que estaban con él rescataron al pueblo que Ismael hijo de Netanías había capturado en Mizpa después de haber matado a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán. Entre los rescatados de Gabaón había hombres, soldados, mujeres, niños y altos funcionarios.
El escape a Egipto
17 Salieron y llegaron a Guerut Quimán, que está junto a Belén. Querían llegar hasta Egipto 18 por temor a los babilonios. Les tenían temor porque Ismael hijo de Netanías había matado a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán, a quien el rey de Babilonia había nombrado gobernador del país.

39 1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah(A) king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar(B) king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army and laid siege(C) to it. 2 And on the ninth day of the fourth(D) month of Zedekiah’s eleventh year, the city wall(E) was broken through.(F) 3 Then all the officials(G) of the king of Babylon came and took seats in the Middle Gate: Nergal-Sharezer of Samgar, Nebo-Sarsekim a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officials of the king of Babylon. 4 When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled; they left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls,(H) and headed toward the Arabah.[a](I)
5 But the Babylonian[b] army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah(J) in the plains of Jericho. They captured(K) him and took him to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah(L) in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced sentence on him. 6 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and also killed all the nobles(M) of Judah. 7 Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes(N) and bound him with bronze shackles to take him to Babylon.(O)
8 The Babylonians[c] set fire(P) to the royal palace and the houses of the people and broke down the walls(Q) of Jerusalem. 9 Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard carried into exile to Babylon the people who remained in the city, along with those who had gone over to him,(R) and the rest of the people.(S) 10 But Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people, who owned nothing; and at that time he gave them vineyards and fields.
11 Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given these orders about Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard: 12 “Take him and look after him; don’t harm(T) him but do for him whatever he asks.” 13 So Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard, Nebushazban a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officers(U) of the king of Babylon 14 sent and had Jeremiah taken out of the courtyard of the guard.(V) They turned him over to Gedaliah(W) son of Ahikam,(X) the son of Shaphan,(Y) to take him back to his home. So he remained among his own people.(Z)
15 While Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him: 16 “Go and tell Ebed-Melek(AA) the Cushite, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfill my words(AB) against this city—words concerning disaster,(AC) not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes. 17 But I will rescue(AD) you on that day, declares the Lord; you will not be given into the hands of those you fear. 18 I will save(AE) you; you will not fall by the sword(AF) but will escape with your life,(AG) because you trust(AH) in me, declares the Lord.’”

40 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah.(AI) He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives(AJ) from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon. 2 When the commander(AK) of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, “The Lord your God decreed(AL) this disaster(AM) for this place.(AN) 3 And now the Lord has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned(AO) against the Lord and did not obey(AP) him. 4 But today I am freeing(AQ) you from the chains(AR) on your wrists. Come with me to Babylon, if you like, and I will look after you; but if you do not want to, then don’t come. Look, the whole country lies before you; go wherever you please.”(AS) 5 However, before Jeremiah turned to go,[d] Nebuzaradan added, “Go back to Gedaliah(AT) son of Ahikam,(AU) the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed(AV) over the towns(AW) of Judah, and live with him among the people, or go anywhere else you please.”(AX)
Then the commander gave him provisions and a present(AY) and let him go. 6 So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah(AZ) and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.
Gedaliah Assassinated(BA)
7 When all the army officers and their men who were still in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor(BB) over the land and had put him in charge of the men, women and children who were the poorest(BC) in the land and who had not been carried into exile to Babylon, 8 they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah(BD)—Ishmael(BE) son of Nethaniah, Johanan(BF) and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite,(BG) and Jaazaniah[e] the son of the Maakathite,(BH) and their men. 9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. “Do not be afraid to serve(BI) the Babylonians,[f](BJ)” he said. “Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.(BK) 10 I myself will stay at Mizpah(BL) to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine,(BM) summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars,(BN) and live in the towns you have taken over.”(BO)
11 When all the Jews in Moab,(BP) Ammon, Edom(BQ) and all the other countries(BR) heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them, 12 they all came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, from all the countries where they had been scattered.(BS) And they harvested an abundance of wine and summer fruit.
13 Johanan(BT) son of Kareah and all the army officers still in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah(BU) 14 and said to him, “Don’t you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites(BV) has sent Ishmael(BW) son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.
15 Then Johanan(BX) son of Kareah said privately to Gedaliah in Mizpah, “Let me go and kill(BY) Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life and cause all the Jews who are gathered around you to be scattered(BZ) and the remnant(CA) of Judah to perish?”
16 But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan(CB) son of Kareah, “Don’t do such a thing! What you are saying about Ishmael is not true.”
41 In the seventh month Ishmael(CC) son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood and had been one of the king’s officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there, 2 Ishmael(CD) son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword,(CE) killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed(CF) as governor over the land.(CG) 3 Ishmael also killed all the men of Judah who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Babylonian[g] soldiers who were there.
4 The day after Gedaliah’s assassination, before anyone knew about it, 5 eighty men who had shaved off their beards,(CH) torn their clothes(CI) and cut(CJ) themselves came from Shechem,(CK) Shiloh(CL) and Samaria,(CM) bringing grain offerings and incense(CN) with them to the house of the Lord.(CO) 6 Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping(CP) as he went. When he met them, he said, “Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.”(CQ) 7 When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.(CR) 8 But ten of them said to Ishmael, “Don’t kill us! We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey, hidden in a field.”(CS) So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others. 9 Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa(CT) had made as part of his defense(CU) against Baasha(CV) king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead.
10 Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people(CW) who were in Mizpah—the king’s daughters(CX) along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.(CY)
11 When Johanan(CZ) son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed, 12 they took all their men and went to fight(DA) Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the great pool(DB) in Gibeon. 13 When all the people(DC) Ishmael had with him saw Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers who were with him, they were glad. 14 All the people Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah(DD) turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped(DE) from Johanan and fled to the Ammonites.
Flight to Egypt
16 Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers(DF) who were with him led away all the people of Mizpah who had survived,(DG) whom Johanan had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam—the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had recovered from Gibeon. 17 And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham(DH) near Bethlehem(DI) on their way to Egypt(DJ) 18 to escape the Babylonians.[h] They were afraid(DK) of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah(DL) son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.
