22 Entonces Elifaz, el temanita respondió:
2 «¿Puede un hombre[a] ser útil a Dios(A),
O un sabio útil para sí mismo?
3 -»¿Es de algún beneficio al Todopoderoso[b] que tú seas justo,
O gana algo si haces perfectos tus caminos?
4 -»¿Es a causa de tu piedad[c] que Él te reprende,
Que entra en juicio contigo(B)?
5 -»¿No es grande tu maldad,
Y sin fin tus iniquidades(C)?
6 -»Porque sin razón tomabas prendas(D) de tus hermanos,
Y has despojado de sus ropas a los desnudos(E).
7 -»No dabas a beber agua al cansado,
Y le negabas(F) pan al hambriento(G).
8 -»Pero la tierra es del poderoso(H),
Y el privilegiado[d](I) mora en ella.
9 -»Despedías a las viudas(J) con las manos vacías
Y quebrabas los brazos[e] de los huérfanos(K).
10 -»Por eso te rodean lazos(L),
Y te aterra temor repentino(M),
11 O tinieblas(N), y no puedes ver,
Y abundancia de agua te cubre(O).
12 ¶»¿No está Dios en lo alto de los cielos(P)?
Mira también las más lejanas[f] estrellas, ¡cuán altas están!
13 -»Y tú dices: “¿Qué sabe Dios(Q)?
¿Puede Él juzgar a través de las densas tinieblas?
14 -”Las nubes lo ocultan(R), y no puede ver,
Y se pasea por la bóveda[g] del cielo”.
15 -»¿Seguirás en la senda antigua
En que anduvieron los hombres malvados(S),
16 Que fueron arrebatados antes de su tiempo(T),
Y cuyos cimientos fueron arrasados[h] por un río(U)?
17 -»Ellos dijeron a Dios: “Apártate de nosotros”
Y: “¿Qué puede hacernos[i] el Todopoderoso(V)?”.
18 -»Él había llenado de bienes sus casas(W),
Pero el consejo de los malos está lejos de mí(X).
19 -»Los justos ven y se alegran,
Y el inocente se burla de ellos(Y),
20 Diciendo: “Ciertamente nuestros adversarios han sido destruidos,
Y el fuego ha consumido(Z) su abundancia[j]”.
21 ¶»Cede[k] ahora y haz la paz con Él,
Así te vendrá el bien(AA).
22 -»Recibe, te ruego, la instrucción[l] de Su boca,
Y pon Sus palabras en tu corazón(AB).
23 -»Si vuelves al Todopoderoso(AC), serás restaurado[m].
Si alejas de tu tienda la injusticia(AD),
24 Y pones tu oro[n](AE) en el polvo,
Y el oro de Ofir entre las piedras de los arroyos,
25 El Todopoderoso será para ti tu oro[o]
Y tu plata escogida.
26 -»Porque entonces te deleitarás en el Todopoderoso(AF),
Y alzarás a Dios tu rostro.
27 -»Orarás a Él(AG) y te escuchará(AH),
Y cumplirás tus votos.
28 -»Decidirás una cosa, y se te cumplirá,
Y en tus caminos resplandecerá la luz(AI).
29 -»Cuando estés abatido[p], hablarás con confianza[q]
Y Él salvará al humilde[r](AJ).
30 -»Él librará aun al que no es inocente,
Que será librado por la pureza de tus manos[s](AK)».

22 Respondió Elifaz temanita, y dijo:
2 ¿Traerá el hombre provecho a Dios?
Al contrario, para sí mismo es provechoso el hombre sabio.
3 ¿Tiene contentamiento el Omnipotente en que tú seas justificado,
O provecho de que tú hagas perfectos tus caminos?(A)
4 ¿Acaso te castiga,
O viene a juicio contigo, a causa de tu piedad?
5 Por cierto tu malicia es grande,
Y tus maldades no tienen fin.
6 Porque sacaste prenda a tus hermanos sin causa,
Y despojaste de sus ropas a los desnudos.
7 No diste de beber agua al cansado,
Y detuviste el pan al hambriento.
8 Pero el hombre pudiente tuvo la tierra,
Y habitó en ella el distinguido.
9 A las viudas enviaste vacías,
Y los brazos de los huérfanos fueron quebrados.
10 Por tanto, hay lazos alrededor de ti,
Y te turba espanto repentino;
11 O tinieblas, para que no veas,
Y abundancia de agua te cubre.
12 ¿No está Dios en la altura de los cielos?
Mira lo encumbrado de las estrellas, cuán elevadas están.
13 ¿Y dirás tú: Qué sabe Dios?
¿Cómo juzgará a través de la oscuridad?
14 Las nubes le rodearon, y no ve;
Y por el circuito del cielo se pasea.
15 ¿Quieres tú seguir la senda antigua
Que pisaron los hombres perversos,
16 Los cuales fueron cortados antes de tiempo,
Cuyo fundamento fue como un río derramado?
17 Decían a Dios: Apártate de nosotros.
¿Y qué les había hecho el Omnipotente?
18 Les había colmado de bienes sus casas.
Pero sea el consejo de ellos lejos de mí.
19 Verán los justos y se gozarán;
Y el inocente los escarnecerá, diciendo:
20 Fueron destruidos nuestros adversarios,
Y el fuego consumió lo que de ellos quedó.
21 Vuelve ahora en amistad con él, y tendrás paz;
Y por ello te vendrá bien.
22 Toma ahora la ley de su boca,
Y pon sus palabras en tu corazón.
23 Si te volvieres al Omnipotente, serás edificado;
Alejarás de tu tienda la aflicción;
24 Tendrás más oro que tierra,
Y como piedras de arroyos oro de Ofir;
25 El Todopoderoso será tu defensa,
Y tendrás plata en abundancia.
26 Porque entonces te deleitarás en el Omnipotente,
Y alzarás a Dios tu rostro.
27 Orarás a él, y él te oirá;
Y tú pagarás tus votos.
28 Determinarás asimismo una cosa, y te será firme,
Y sobre tus caminos resplandecerá luz.
29 Cuando fueren abatidos, dirás tú: Enaltecimiento habrá;
Y Dios salvará al humilde de ojos.
30 Él libertará al inocente,
Y por la limpieza de tus manos este será librado.

Chapter 22
Eliphaz’s Third Speech. 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:
2 Can a man be profitable to God?(A)
Can a wise man be profitable to him?
3 Does it please the Almighty that you are just?(B)
Does he gain if your ways are perfect?[b]
4 Is it because of your piety that he reproves you—
that he enters into judgment with you?
5 Is not your wickedness great,
your iniquity endless?
6 You keep your relatives’ goods in pledge unjustly,[c]
leave them stripped naked of their clothing.(C)
7 To the thirsty you give no water to drink,
and from the hungry you withhold bread;
8 As if the land belonged to the powerful,
and only the privileged could dwell in it!
9 You sent widows away empty-handed,
and the resources of orphans are destroyed.(D)
10 Therefore snares are round about you,(E)
sudden terror makes you panic,
11 Or darkness—you cannot see!
A deluge of waters covers you.
12 Does not God, in the heights of the heavens,(F)
behold the top of the stars, high though they are?
13 Yet you say, “What does God know?(G)
Can he judge through the thick darkness?
14 Clouds hide him so that he cannot see
as he walks around the circuit of the heavens!”
15 Do you indeed keep to the ancient way
trodden by the worthless?
16 They were snatched before their time;
their foundations a river swept away.
17 They said to God, “Let us alone!”
and, “What can the Almighty do to us?”
18 Yet he had filled their houses with good things.
The designs of the wicked are far from me
19 The just look on and are glad,
and the innocent deride them:[e](I)
20 “Truly our enemies are destroyed,
and what was left to them, fire has consumed!”
21 Settle with him and have peace.
That way good shall come to you:
22 Receive instruction from his mouth,
and place his words in your heart.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored;
if you put iniquity far from your tent,
24 And treat raw gold as dust,
the fine gold of Ophir[f] as pebbles in the wadi,
25 Then the Almighty himself shall be your gold
and your sparkling silver.
26 For then you shall delight in the Almighty,
you shall lift up your face toward God.
27 Entreat him and he will hear you,(J)
and your vows you shall fulfill.
28 What you decide shall succeed for you,
and upon your ways light shall shine.
29 For when they are brought low, you will say, “It is pride!”
But downcast eyes he saves.(K)
30 He will deliver whoever is innocent;
you shall be delivered if your hands are clean.(L)

- 22:1–27:23 The traditional three cycles of speeches breaks down in chaps. 22–27, because Zophar does not appear. This may be interpreted as a sign that the three friends see no point in further dialogue, or that Job’s replies have reduced them to silence, or that there has been a mistake in the transmission of the text (hence various transferrals of verses have been proposed to include Zophar, but without any textual evidence).
- 22:3 Another irony: God will “gain,” because he will have been proved right in his claim to the satan that Job is “perfect.”
- 22:6–9 This criticism of Job by Eliphaz is untrue (cf. 31:19), but he is driven to it by his belief that God always acts justly, even when he causes someone to suffer; suffering is due to wrongdoing (cf. v. 29).
- 22:18 The second part of the verse repeats 21:16.
- 22:19 Them: the wicked. Eliphaz obviously thinks that the just can be pleased by God’s punishment of the wicked. Such pleasure at the downfall of the wicked is expressed elsewhere, e.g., Ps 58:11; 63:12.
- 22:24 Ophir: see note on Ps 45:10.
