⁸ They said to Joshua, ‘We are your servants.’^(A)

Then Joshua asked them, ‘Who are you and where do you come from? ’

¹¹ So our elders and all the inhabitants of our land told us, “Take provisions with you for the journey; go and meet them and say, ‘We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’ ”

⁴ Then the king of Israel answered, ‘Just as you say, my lord the king: I am yours, along with all that I have.’

³² So they dressed with sackcloth round their waists and ropes round their heads, went to the king of Israel, and said, ‘Your servant Ben-hadad says, “Please spare my life.” ’

So he said, ‘Is he still alive? He is my brother.’

¹⁴ So King Hezekiah of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria at Lachish:^(A) ‘I have done wrong;^(B) withdraw from me. Whatever you demand from me, I will pay.’ The king of Assyria demanded ten tonnes^[a] of silver and one tonne^[b] of gold from King Hezekiah of Judah.
