24 ¶ And the wife bore a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him.

25 And the Spirit of the Lord began to [a]strengthen him in the host of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

14 2 Samson desireth to have a wife of the Philistines. 6 He killeth a lion. 12 He propoundeth a riddle. 19 He killeth thirty. 20 His wife forsaketh him, and taketh another.

Now Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines,

And he came up and told his father and his mother and said, I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore [b]give me her to wife.

Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there [c]never a wife among the daughters of thy brethren, and among all my people, that thou must go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Give me her, for she pleaseth me well.

But his father and his mother knew not that it came of the Lord, that he should seek an occasion against the [d]Philistines: for at that time the Philistines reigned over Israel.

¶ Then went Samson, and his father and his mother down to Timnah, and came to the vineyards of Timnah: and behold, a young lion roared upon him.

And the Spirit of the Lord [e]came upon him, and he tare him, as one should have rent a kid, and had nothing in his hand, neither told he his father nor his mother what he had done.

And he went down, and talked with the woman which was beautiful in the eyes of Samson.

¶ And within a few days, when he returned [f]to receive her, he went aside to see the carcass of the lion: and behold, there was a swarm of bees, and honey in the body of the lion.

And he took thereof in his hands, and went eating, and came to his father and to his mother, and gave unto them, and they did eat: but he told not them, that he had taken the honey out of the body of the lion.

10 So his father went down unto the woman, and Samson made there a [g]feast: for so used the young men to do.

11 And when [h]they saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him.

12 Then Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: and if you can declare it me within seven days of the feast, and find it out, I will give you thirty sheets, and thirty [i]change of garments.

13 But if you cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they answered him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.

14 And he said unto them, Out of the eater came meat, and out of the strong came sweetness: and they could not in three days expound the riddle.

15 And when the seventh day was [j]come, they said unto Samson’s wife, Entice thine husband that he may declare us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire. Have ye called us [k]to possess us? is it not so?

16 And Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, Surely thou hatest me, and lovest me not: for thou hast put forth a riddle unto the [l]children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?

17 Then Samson’s wife wept before him [m]seven days, while their feast lasted, and when the seventh day came, he told her, because she was importunate upon him: so she told the riddle to the children of her people.

18 And the men of the city said unto him the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a Lion? Then said he unto them, [n]If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.

19 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he went down [o]to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them and spoiled them, and gave change of garments unto them, which expounded the riddle: and his wrath was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.

20 Then Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.

15 4 Samson tieth firebrands to the foxes’ tails. 6 The Philistines burnt his father-in-law and his wife. 15 With the jawbone of an ass he killeth a thousand men. 19 Out of a great tooth in the jaw God gave him water.

But within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a kid, saying, I will [p]go in to my wife into the chamber: but her father would not suffer him to go in.

And her father said, I thought that thou hadst hated her: therefore gave I her to thy companion. Is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of the other.

Then Samson said unto them, Now am I more [q]blameless than the Philistines: therefore will I do them displeasure.

¶ And Samson went out, and took three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned them tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.

And when he had set the brands on fire, he sent them out into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the [r]ricks and the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives.

Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered, Samson the son-in-law of the [s]Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. Then the Philistines came up and [t]burnt her and her father with fire.

And Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and then I will cease.

So he smote them [u]hip and thigh with a mighty plague: then he went and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.

¶ Then the Philistines came up, and pitched in Judah, and [v]were spread abroad in Lehi.

10 And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up unto us? And they answered, To [w]bind Samson are we come up, and to do to him as he hath done to us.

11 Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? [x]Wherefore then hast thou done thus unto us? And he answered them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

12 Again they said unto him, We are come to bind thee, and to deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.

13 And they answered him, saying, No, but we will bind thee and [y]deliver thee unto their hand, but we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him from the rock.

14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms, became as flax that was burnt with fire: for the bands loosed from his hands.

15 And he found a [z]new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hands, and caught it, and slew a thousand men therewith.

16 Then Samson said, With the jaw of an ass are heaps upon heaps: with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.

17 And when he had left speaking, he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place, [aa]Ramath Lehi.

18 And he was sore athirst, and [ab]called on the Lord, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?

19 Then God brake the cheek tooth, that was in the jaw, and water came there out: and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he was revived: wherefore the name thereof is called, [ac]En Hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.

20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

16 3 Samson carrieth away the gates of Gaza. 18 He was deceived by Delilah. 30 He pulleth down the house upon the Philistines, and dieth with them.

Then went Samson to [ad]Gaza, and saw there [ae]an harlot, [af]and went in unto her.

And it was told to the Gazites, Samson is come hither. And they went about, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, Abide [ag]till the morning early, and we shall kill him.

And Samson slept till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gates of the city and the two posts, and lifted them away with the bars, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron.

And after this he loved a woman by the [ah]river of Sorek, whose name was Delilah:

Unto whom came the princes of the Philistines, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may overcome him, that we may bind him, and punish him, and every one of us shall give thee eleven hundred [ai]shekels of silver.

¶ And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound, to do thee hurt.

Samson then answered unto her, If they bind me with seven [aj]green cords, that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.

And the princes of the Philistines brought her seven green cords that were not dry, and she bound him therewith.

(And she had [ak]men lying in wait with her in the chamber) Then she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the cords, as a thread of tow is broken, when [al]it feeleth fire: so his strength was not known.

10 ¶ After Delilah said unto Samson, See, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies. I pray thee now, [am]tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound.

11 Then he answered her, If they bind me with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.

12 Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson: (and men lay in wait in the chamber) and he brake them from his arms, as a thread.

13 ¶ Afterward Delilah said to Samson, Hitherto thou hast beguiled me, and told me lies: tell me how thou mightest be bound. [an]And he said unto her, If thou plattedst seven locks of mine head with the threads of the woof.

14 And she fastened it with a pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and went away with the [ao]pin of the web, and the woof.

15 Again she said unto him, How canst thou say, [ap]I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.

16 And because she was importunate upon him with her words continually, and vexed him, his soul was pained unto the death.

17 Therefore he told her all his [aq]heart, and said unto her, There never came razor upon mine head: for I am a Nazirite unto God from my mother’s womb: therefore if I be shaven, my strength will go from me, and I shall be weak and be like all other men.

18 And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent, and called for the Princes of the Philistines, saying, Come up once again: for he hath showed me all his heart. Then the Princes of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought the money in their hands.

19 And she made him sleep upon her knees, and she called a man, and made him to shave off the seven locks of his head, and she began to vex him, and his strength was gone [ar]from him.

20 Then she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and thought, I will go out now as at other times, and shake myself, but he knew not that the Lord was departed from him.

21 Therefore the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters: and he did grind in the prison house.

22 And the hair of his head began to [as]grow again after that it was shaven.

23 Then the Princes of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hands.

24 Also when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy and destroyer of our country, which hath slain many of us.

25 And when their hearts were merry, they said, Call Samson, that he may make us pastime: So they called Samson out of the prison house, and he [at]was a laughing stock unto them, and they set him between the pillars.

26 Then Samson said unto the servant that led him by the hand, Lead me, that I may touch the pillars that the house standeth upon, and that I may lean to them.

27 (Now the house was full of men and women, and there were all the princes of the Philistines: also upon the roof were about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson [au]played)

28 Then Samson called unto the Lord, and said, O Lord God, I pray thee, think upon me: O God, I beseech thee, strengthen me at this time only, that I may be [av]at once [aw]avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.

29 And Samson laid hold on the two middle pillars whereupon the house stood, and on which it was borne up: on the one with his right hand, and on the other with his left.

30 Then said Samson, [ax]Let me lose my life with the Philistines: and he bowed him with all his might, and the house fell upon the princes, and upon all the people that were therein: so the dead which he slew at his death, were more than they which he had slain in his life.

24 The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson.(A) He grew(B) and the Lord blessed him,(C) 25 and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir(D) him while he was in Mahaneh Dan,(E) between Zorah and Eshtaol.

Samson’s Marriage

14 Samson(F) went down to Timnah(G) and saw there a young Philistine woman. When he returned, he said to his father and mother, “I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.”(H)

His father and mother replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people?(I) Must you go to the uncircumcised(J) Philistines to get a wife?(K)

But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me. She’s the right one for me.” (His parents did not know that this was from the Lord,(L) who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines;(M) for at that time they were ruling over Israel.)(N)

Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him(O) so that he tore the lion apart(P) with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done. Then he went down and talked with the woman, and he liked her.

Some time later, when he went back to marry her, he turned aside to look at the lion’s carcass, and in it he saw a swarm of bees and some honey. He scooped out the honey with his hands and ate as he went along. When he rejoined his parents, he gave them some, and they too ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s carcass.

10 Now his father went down to see the woman. And there Samson held a feast,(Q) as was customary for young men. 11 When the people saw him, they chose thirty men to be his companions.

12 “Let me tell you a riddle,(R)” Samson said to them. “If you can give me the answer within the seven days of the feast,(S) I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.(T) 13 If you can’t tell me the answer, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.”

“Tell us your riddle,” they said. “Let’s hear it.”

14 He replied,

“Out of the eater, something to eat;
out of the strong, something sweet.”(U)

For three days they could not give the answer.

15 On the fourth[a] day, they said to Samson’s wife, “Coax(V) your husband into explaining the riddle for us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death.(W) Did you invite us here to steal our property?”

16 Then Samson’s wife threw herself on him, sobbing, “You hate me! You don’t really love me.(X) You’ve given my people a riddle, but you haven’t told me the answer.”

“I haven’t even explained it to my father or mother,” he replied, “so why should I explain it to you?” 17 She cried the whole seven days(Y) of the feast. So on the seventh day he finally told her, because she continued to press him. She in turn explained the riddle to her people.

18 Before sunset on the seventh day the men of the town said to him,

“What is sweeter than honey?
What is stronger than a lion?”(Z)

Samson said to them,

“If you had not plowed with my heifer,
you would not have solved my riddle.”

19 Then the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.(AA) He went down to Ashkelon,(AB) struck down thirty of their men, stripped them of everything and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with anger,(AC) he returned to his father’s home. 20 And Samson’s wife was given to one of his companions(AD) who had attended him at the feast.

Samson’s Vengeance on the Philistines

15 Later on, at the time of wheat harvest,(AE) Samson(AF) took a young goat(AG) and went to visit his wife. He said, “I’m going to my wife’s room.”(AH) But her father would not let him go in.

“I was so sure you hated her,” he said, “that I gave her to your companion.(AI) Isn’t her younger sister more attractive? Take her instead.”

Samson said to them, “This time I have a right to get even with the Philistines; I will really harm them.” So he went out and caught three hundred foxes(AJ) and tied them tail to tail in pairs. He then fastened a torch(AK) to every pair of tails, lit the torches(AL) and let the foxes loose in the standing grain of the Philistines. He burned up the shocks(AM) and standing grain, together with the vineyards and olive groves.

When the Philistines asked, “Who did this?” they were told, “Samson, the Timnite’s son-in-law, because his wife was given to his companion.(AN)

So the Philistines went up and burned her(AO) and her father to death.(AP) Samson said to them, “Since you’ve acted like this, I swear that I won’t stop until I get my revenge on you.” He attacked them viciously and slaughtered many of them. Then he went down and stayed in a cave in the rock(AQ) of Etam.(AR)

The Philistines went up and camped in Judah, spreading out near Lehi.(AS) 10 The people of Judah asked, “Why have you come to fight us?”

“We have come to take Samson prisoner,” they answered, “to do to him as he did to us.”

11 Then three thousand men from Judah went down to the cave in the rock of Etam and said to Samson, “Don’t you realize that the Philistines are rulers over us?(AT) What have you done to us?”

He answered, “I merely did to them what they did to me.”

12 They said to him, “We’ve come to tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines.”

Samson said, “Swear to me(AU) that you won’t kill me yourselves.”

13 “Agreed,” they answered. “We will only tie you up and hand you over to them. We will not kill you.” So they bound him with two new ropes(AV) and led him up from the rock. 14 As he approached Lehi,(AW) the Philistines came toward him shouting. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.(AX) The ropes on his arms became like charred flax,(AY) and the bindings dropped from his hands. 15 Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men.(AZ)

16 Then Samson said,

“With a donkey’s jawbone
I have made donkeys of them.[b](BA)
With a donkey’s jawbone
I have killed a thousand men.”

17 When he finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone; and the place was called Ramath Lehi.[c](BB)

18 Because he was very thirsty, he cried out to the Lord,(BC) “You have given your servant this great victory.(BD) Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” 19 Then God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When Samson drank, his strength returned and he revived.(BE) So the spring(BF) was called En Hakkore,[d] and it is still there in Lehi.

20 Samson led[e] Israel for twenty years(BG) in the days of the Philistines.

Samson and Delilah

16 One day Samson(BH) went to Gaza,(BI) where he saw a prostitute.(BJ) He went in to spend the night with her. The people of Gaza were told, “Samson is here!” So they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate.(BK) They made no move during the night, saying, “At dawn(BL) we’ll kill him.”

But Samson lay there only until the middle of the night. Then he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate, together with the two posts, and tore them loose, bar and all. He lifted them to his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.(BM)

Some time later, he fell in love(BN) with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah.(BO) The rulers of the Philistines(BP) went to her and said, “See if you can lure(BQ) him into showing you the secret of his great strength(BR) and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels[f] of silver.”(BS)

So Delilah(BT) said to Samson, “Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued.”

Samson answered her, “If anyone ties me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”

Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she tied him with them. With men hidden in the room,(BU) she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(BV) But he snapped the bowstrings as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.

10 Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have made a fool of me;(BW) you lied to me. Come now, tell me how you can be tied.”

11 He said, “If anyone ties me securely with new ropes(BX) that have never been used, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”

12 So Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them. Then, with men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(BY) But he snapped the ropes off his arms as if they were threads.

13 Delilah then said to Samson, “All this time you have been making a fool of me and lying to me. Tell me how you can be tied.”

He replied, “If you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I’ll become as weak as any other man.” So while he was sleeping, Delilah took the seven braids of his head, wove them into the fabric 14 and[g] tightened it with the pin.

Again she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(BZ) He awoke from his sleep and pulled up the pin and the loom, with the fabric.

15 Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’(CA) when you won’t confide in me? This is the third time(CB) you have made a fool of me and haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.(CC) 16 With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death of it.

17 So he told her everything.(CD) “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite(CE) dedicated to God from my mother’s womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.”

18 When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines(CF), “Come back once more; he has told me everything.” So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands.(CG) 19 After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him.[h] And his strength left him.(CH)

20 Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(CI)

He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.(CJ)

21 Then the Philistines(CK) seized him, gouged out his eyes(CL) and took him down to Gaza.(CM) Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain(CN) in the prison. 22 But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.

The Death of Samson

23 Now the rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon(CO) their god and to celebrate, saying, “Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands.”

24 When the people saw him, they praised their god,(CP) saying,

“Our god has delivered our enemy
    into our hands,(CQ)
the one who laid waste our land
    and multiplied our slain.”

25 While they were in high spirits,(CR) they shouted, “Bring out Samson to entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he performed for them.

When they stood him among the pillars, 26 Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.” 27 Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof(CS) were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. 28 Then Samson prayed to the Lord,(CT) “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge(CU) on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, 30 Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.
