Li t ap di moun yo “Vin batize pou montre nou vle chanje lavi nou epi Bondye va padone peche nou.” 4 Se menm jan sa te ekri nan liv pwofèt Ezayi a:
“Gen yon vwa k ap pale byen fò nan dezè a:
Prepare chemen pou Senyè a.
Fè wout yo byen dwat devan l.
5 Tout vale yo gen pou konble,
tout gwo mòn yo ak kolin yo fèt pou vin plat.
Wout ki gen koub yo, nou dwe fè yo dwat,
epi chemen ki difisil yo fèt pou vin swa.
6 Tout moun gen pou yo wè jan
Bondye ap delivre nou!”(A)
7 Lè sa a, yon foul moun te vin jwenn Jan pou l te batize yo. Li di yo: “Bann ras vipè! Kilès ki fè nou konnen pou n chape anba jijman kolè Bondye ki pa lwen vini an? 8 Olye pou n chita ap di se pitit Abraram nou ye, se pou nou montre nou repanti nan jan n ap viv. Paske, m ap di nou franchman, Bondye ka fè wòch sa yo fè pitit pou Abraram wi. 9 Rach la gentan pare pou koupe pyebwa yo depi nan rasin. Nenpòt pyebwa ki pa pwodui bonjan fwi, y ap koupe l epi jete l nan dife a.”
10 Lè sa a, moun yo poze Jan kesyon, yo mande l: “Ki sa pou nou fè menm?”
11 Jan reponn yo: “Si ou gen de chemiz, bay moun ki pa genyen an youn. Si ou gen manje pou manje, bay sa k pa genyen tou.”
12 Ata pèseptè kontribisyon yo te vin jwenn Jan tou pou l batize yo. Yo mande l: “Mèt, kisa pou nou fè?”
13 Li te di yo, “Pa fè moun peye plis lajan pase sa gouvènman an te di nou fè yo peye a.”
14 Sòlda yo te poze Jan kesyon tou, yo te di l: “E nou menm, kisa pou nou fè?”
Li te reponn yo, “Piga nou itilize lafòs osinon manti pou nou soutire lajan nan men moun yo. Se pou nou kontante nou ak salè nou touche a.”
15 Kòm tout moun t ap veye ki lè pou Mesi a te parèt, yo t ap poze tèt yo kesyon. Yo t ap reflechi konsènan Jan. Yo t ap di: “Ou kwè se pa li menm ki Mesi a.”
16 Jan te reponn moun yo, li di yo: “Mwen menm, mwen batize nou nan dlo, men gen yon lòt k ap vini apre m. Li pi fò pase m. Mwen pa bon ase pou m ta menm delase soulye l. Li menm, l ap batize nou nan Sentespri ak nan dife. 17 Li gen laye[b] l nan men li pou l netwaye rekòt la. L ap mete bon grenn yo nan depo li, epi l ap boule pay la nan yon dife ki p ap janm etenn.” 18 Jan te di anpil lòt bagay kon sa toujou pou l ankouraje pèp la viv lavi yo yon lòt jan.
