Women Accompanying Jesus

8 Soon afterwards he went on ^(A)through cities and villages, proclaiming and ^(B)bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, ² and also ^(C)some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: ^(D)Mary, called Magdalene, ^(E)from whom seven demons had gone out, ³ and ^(F)Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them^[a] out of their means.

The Parable of the Sower

^4 (G)And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: ^5 (H)“A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. ⁶ And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, ^(I)it withered away, because it had no moisture. ⁷ And some fell among ^(J)thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. ⁸ And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded ^(K)a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, ^(L)“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

⁹ And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, ¹⁰ he said, ^(M)“To you it has been given to know ^(N)the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so ^(O)that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand’. ^11 (P)Now the parable is this: The seed is ^(Q)the word of God. ¹² The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not ^(R)believe and be saved. ¹³ And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it ^(S)with joy. But these have no root; they ^(T)believe for a while, and in time of testing ^(U)fall away. ¹⁴ And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but ^(V)as they go on their way they are choked by the ^(W)cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. ¹⁵ As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and ^(X)bear fruit ^(Y)with patience.

A Lamp Under a Jar

^16 (Z)(AA)“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. ^17 (AB)For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. ^18 (AC)Take care then how you hear, ^(AD)for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”

Jesus' Mother and Brothers

^19 (AE)Then his mother and ^(AF)his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. ²⁰ And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” ²¹ But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those ^(AG)who hear the word of God and do it.”

Jesus Calms a Storm

^22 (AH)One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of ^(AI)the lake.” So they set out, ²³ and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on ^(AJ)the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. ²⁴ And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and ^(AK)rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, ^(AL)and there was a calm. ²⁵ He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they ^(AM)were afraid, and they ^(AN)marvelled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that ^(AO)he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

^26 (AP)Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes,^[b] which is opposite Galilee. ²⁷ When Jesus^[c] had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house ^(AQ)but among the tombs. ²⁸ When he saw Jesus, he ^(AR)cried out and fell down before him and said ^(AS)with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, ^(AT)Son of ^(AU)the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” ²⁹ For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon ^(AV)into the desert.) ³⁰ Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, ^(AW)“Legion”, for many demons had entered him. ³¹ And they begged him not to command them to depart into ^(AX)the abyss. ³² Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. ³³ Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into ^(AY)the lake and were drowned.

³⁴ When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. ³⁵ Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting ^(AZ)at the feet of Jesus, ^(BA)clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. ³⁶ And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed^[d] man had been healed. ³⁷ Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes ^(BB)asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. ³⁸ The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, ³⁹ “Return to your home, and ^(BC)declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

⁴⁰ Now when Jesus returned, the crowd ^(BD)welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. ^41 (BE)And there came a man named Jairus, who was ^(BF)a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus' feet, he implored him to come to his house, ⁴² for he had ^(BG)an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

As Jesus went, the people ^(BH)pressed around him. ⁴³ And there was a woman ^(BI)who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her ^(BJ)living on physicians,^[e] she could not be healed by anyone. ⁴⁴ She came up behind him and touched ^(BK)the fringe of his garment, and ^(BL)immediately her discharge of blood ceased. ⁴⁵ And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter^[f] said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” ⁴⁶ But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that ^(BM)power has gone out from me.” ⁴⁷ And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. ⁴⁸ And he said to her, “Daughter, ^(BN)your faith has made you well; ^(BO)go in peace.”

⁴⁹ While he was still speaking, someone from ^(BP)the ruler's house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; ^(BQ)do not trouble ^(BR)the Teacher any more.” ⁵⁰ But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.” ⁵¹ And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except ^(BS)Peter and ^(BT)John and James, and the father and mother of the child. ⁵² And all were weeping and ^(BU)mourning for her, but he ^(BV)said, “Do not weep, for ^(BW)she is not dead but ^(BX)sleeping.” ⁵³ And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. ⁵⁴ But ^(BY)taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, ^(BZ)arise.” ⁵⁵ And ^(CA)her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given to her to eat. ⁵⁶ And her parents were amazed, but ^(CB)he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

9 ^(CC)And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, ^2 (CD)and he sent them out to ^(CE)proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. ^3 (CF)And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, ^(CG)no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.^{[g] 4} And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. ⁵ And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town ^(CH)shake off the dust from your feet ^(CI)as a testimony ^(CJ)against them.” ^6 (CK)And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus

^7 (CL)Now ^(CM)Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that ^(CN)John had been raised from the dead, ^8 (CO)by some that Elijah had appeared, and ^(CP)by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. ⁹ Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And ^(CQ)he sought to see him.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

¹⁰ On their return ^(CR)the apostles told him all that they had done. ^(CS)And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. ¹¹ When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he ^(CT)welcomed them and ^(CU)spoke to them of the kingdom of God and ^(CV)cured those who needed healing. ¹² Now ^(CW)the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, ^(CX)“Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” ¹³ But he said to them, ^(CY)“You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than ^(CZ)five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” ¹⁴ For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” ¹⁵ And they did so, and made them all sit down. ¹⁶ And taking the five loaves and the two fish, ^(DA)he looked up to heaven and ^(DB)said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. ¹⁷ And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

^18 (DC)Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” ¹⁹ And they answered, ^(DD)“John the Baptist. But others say, ^(DE)Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” ²⁰ Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, ^(DF)“The Christ of God.”

Jesus Foretells His Death

^21 (DG)And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, ^22 (DH)saying, ^(DI)“The Son of Man must ^(DJ)suffer many things and ^(DK)be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on ^(DL)the third day be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

²³ And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him ^(DM)deny himself and ^(DN)take up his cross ^(DO)daily and follow me. ²⁴ For ^(DP)whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. ^25 (DQ)For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? ²⁶ For ^(DR)whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed ^(DS)when he comes in ^(DT)his glory and the glory of the Father and of ^(DU)the holy angels. ²⁷ But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not ^(DV)taste death ^(DW)until they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

^28 (DX)Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him ^(DY)Peter and John and James and ^(DZ)went up on the mountain to pray. ²⁹ And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was ^(EA)altered, and ^(EB)his clothing became dazzling white. ³⁰ And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, ³¹ who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,^[h] which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. ³² Now Peter and those who were with him ^(EC)were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake ^(ED)they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. ³³ And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three ^(EE)tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—^(EF)not knowing what he said. ³⁴ As he was saying these things, ^(EG)a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. ³⁵ And ^(EH)a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, ^(EI)my Chosen One;^{[i] (EJ)}listen to him!” ³⁶ And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. ^(EK)And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

^37 (EL)On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. ³⁸ And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for ^(EM)he is my only child. ³⁹ And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. ⁴⁰ And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but ^(EN)they could not.” ⁴¹ Jesus answered, “O ^(EO)faithless and twisted generation, ^(EP)how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” ⁴² While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus ^(EQ)rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and ^(ER)gave him back to his father. ⁴³ And all were astonished at ^(ES)the majesty of God.

Jesus Again Foretells His Death

^(ET)But while they were all marvelling at everything he was doing, Jesus^[j] said ^(EU)to his disciples, ⁴⁴ “Let these words sink into your ears: ^(EV)The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” ^45 (EW)But they did not understand this saying, and ^(EX)it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Who Is the Greatest?

^46 (EY)An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. ⁴⁷ But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side ⁴⁸ and said to them, ^(EZ)“Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and ^(FA)whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For ^(FB)he who is least among all of you is the one who is great.”

Anyone Not Against Us Is For Us

^49 (FC)John answered, “Master, we saw someone ^(FD)casting out demons in your name, and ^(FE)we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” ⁵⁰ But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, ^(FF)for the one who is not against you is for you.”

A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus

⁵¹ When the days drew near for ^(FG)him to be taken up, ^(FH)he set his face ^(FI)to go to Jerusalem. ⁵² And ^(FJ)he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of ^(FK)the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. ⁵³ But ^(FL)the people did not receive him, because ^(FM)his face was set towards Jerusalem. ⁵⁴ And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell ^(FN)fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”^{[k] 55} But he turned and rebuked them.^{[l] 56} And they went on to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus

⁵⁷ As they were going ^(FO)along the road, ^(FP)someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” ⁵⁸ And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” ⁵⁹ To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” ⁶⁰ And Jesus^[m] said to him, “Leave ^(FQ)the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and ^(FR)proclaim the kingdom of God.” ⁶¹ Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, ^(FS)but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” ⁶² Jesus said to him, ^(FT)“No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two

10 After this the Lord appointed ^(FU)seventy-two^[n] others and ^(FV)sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. ^2 (FW)And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few. ^(FX)Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. ³ Go your way; ^(FY)behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. ^4 (FZ)Carry no money bag, no knapsack, no sandals, and ^(GA)greet no one on the road. ⁵ Whatever house you enter, first say, ^(GB)‘Peace be to this house!’ ⁶ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, ^(GC)it will return to you. ⁷ And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for ^(GD)the labourer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. ⁸ Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. ⁹ Heal the sick in it and say to them, ^(GE)‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ ¹⁰ But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, ^11 (GF)‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that ^(GG)the kingdom of God has come near.’ ¹² I tell you, ^(GH)it will be more bearable on ^(GI)that day for Sodom than for that town.

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

^13 (GJ)“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in ^(GK)Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ^14 (GL)But it will be more bearable in the judgement for ^(GM)Tyre and Sidon than for you. ¹⁵ And you, Capernaum, ^(GN)will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to ^(GO)Hades.

^16 (GP)“The one who hears you hears me, and ^(GQ)the one who rejects you rejects me, and ^(GR)the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

The Return of the Seventy-Two

^17 (GS)The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, ^(GT)even the demons are subject to us in your name!” ¹⁸ And he said to them, ^(GU)“I saw Satan ^(GV)fall like lightning from heaven. ¹⁹ Behold, I have given you authority ^(GW)to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of ^(GX)the enemy, and ^(GY)nothing shall hurt you. ^20 (GZ)Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that ^(HA)your names are written in heaven.”

Jesus Rejoices in the Father's Will

^21 (HB)In that same hour ^(HC)he rejoiced ^(HD)in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, ^(HE)Lord of heaven and earth, that ^(HF)you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and ^(HG)revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for ^(HH)such was your gracious will.^{[o] 22 (HI)}All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is ^(HJ)except the Father, or who the Father is ^(HK)except the Son and anyone ^(HL)to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

²³ Then turning to the disciples he said privately, ^(HM)“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! ²⁴ For I tell you ^(HN)that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

^25 (HO)And behold, a ^(HP)lawyer stood up to ^(HQ)put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to ^(HR)inherit eternal life?” ²⁶ He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” ²⁷ And he answered, ^(HS)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and ^(HT)your neighbour as yourself.” ²⁸ And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; ^(HU)do this, and you will live.”

²⁹ But he, ^(HV)desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?” ³⁰ Jesus replied, “A man ^(HW)was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. ³¹ Now by chance a ^(HX)priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. ³² So likewise ^(HY)a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. ³³ But a ^(HZ)Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. ³⁴ He went to him and ^(IA)bound up his wounds, pouring on ^(IB)oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. ³⁵ And the next day he took out two ^(IC)denarii^[p] and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ ³⁶ Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbour to the man who fell among the robbers?” ³⁷ He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

Martha and Mary

³⁸ Now as they went on their way, Jesus^[q] entered a village. And a woman named ^(ID)Martha ^(IE)welcomed him into her house. ³⁹ And she had a sister called ^(IF)Mary, who ^(IG)sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. ⁴⁰ But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” ⁴¹ But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are ^(IH)anxious and troubled about many things, ⁴² but one thing is necessary.^[r] Mary has chosen ^(II)the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

22 ^(A)Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called ^(B)the Passover. ² And the chief priests and the scribes ^(C)were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.

Judas to Betray Jesus

^3 (D)Then ^(E)Satan entered into ^(F)Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. ⁴ He went away and conferred with the chief priests and ^(G)officers how he might betray him to them. ⁵ And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. ⁶ So he consented and sought an opportunity to ^(H)betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

The Passover with the Disciples

^7 (I)Then came ^(J)the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. ⁸ So Jesus^[a] sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” ⁹ They said to him, “Where would you have us prepare it?” ¹⁰ He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters ¹¹ and tell the master of the house, ^(K)‘The Teacher says to you, Where is ^(L)the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ ¹² And he will show you ^(M)a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” ¹³ And they went and found it ^(N)just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Institution of the Lord's Supper

^14 (O)And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. ¹⁵ And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. ¹⁶ For I tell you I will not eat it^{[b] (P)}until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” ¹⁷ And he took a cup, and ^(Q)when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. ^18 (R)For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine ^(S)until the kingdom of God comes.” ^19 (T)And he took bread, and ^(U)when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ^(V)“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” ²⁰ And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, ^(W)“This cup that is poured out for you is ^(X)the new ^(Y)covenant in my blood.^{[c] 21 (Z)}But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is ^(AA)with me on the table. ²² For the Son of Man goes ^(AB)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” ²³ And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

Who Is the Greatest?

^24 (AC)A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. ^25 (AD)And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles ^(AE)exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. ^26 (AF)But not so with you. Rather, let ^(AG)the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. ²⁷ For who is the greater, ^(AH)one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But ^(AI)I am among you as the one who serves.

²⁸ “You are those who have stayed with me ^(AJ)in my trials, ²⁹ and ^(AK)I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, ^30 (AL)that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and ^(AM)sit on thrones judging ^(AN)the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

³¹ “Simon, Simon, behold, ^(AO)Satan demanded to have you,^{[d] (AP)}that he might sift you like wheat, ³² but ^(AQ)I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

³⁵ And he said to them, ^(AV)“When I sent you out with no money bag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” ³⁶ He said to them, “But now let the one who has a money bag take it, and likewise a knapsack. Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

^39 (BB)And he came out and went, ^(BC)as was his custom, to ^(BD)the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. ^40 (BE)And when he came to ^(BF)the place, he said to them, ^(BG)“Pray that you may not ^(BH)enter into temptation.” ⁴¹ And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and ^(BI)knelt down and prayed, ⁴² saying, ^(BJ)“Father, if you are willing, remove ^(BK)this cup from me. ^(BL)Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” ⁴³ And there appeared to him ^(BM)an angel from heaven, strengthening him. ⁴⁴ And ^(BN)being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.^{[g] 45} And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, ⁴⁶ and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and ^(BO)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, ⁴⁸ but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” ⁴⁹ And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike ^(BR)with the sword?” ⁵⁰ And one of them struck the servant^[h] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. ⁵¹ But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. ⁵² Then Jesus said to the chief priests and ^(BS)officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? ⁵³ When ^(BT)I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is ^(BU)your hour, and ^(BV)the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus

^54 (BW)Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, ^(BX)and Peter was following at a distance. ^55 (BY)And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of ^(BZ)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. ⁵⁶ Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” ⁵⁷ But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” ⁵⁸ And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” ⁵⁹ And after an interval of about an hour still another ^(CA)insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” ⁶⁰ But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. ⁶¹ And the Lord turned and ^(CB)looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, ^(CC)“Before the cock crows today, you will ^(CD)deny me three times.” ⁶² And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Is Mocked

^63 (CE)Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. ^64 (CF)They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, ^(CG)“Prophesy! ^(CH)Who is it that struck you?” ⁶⁵ And they said many other things against him, ^(CI)blaspheming him.

Jesus Before the Council

^66 (CJ)When day came, ^(CK)the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their ^(CL)council, and they ^(CM)said, ^67 (CN)“If you are ^(CO)the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, ⁶⁸ and if I ask you, you will not answer. ⁶⁹ But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated ^(CP)at the right hand of the power of God.” ⁷⁰ So they all said, “Are you ^(CQ)the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, ^(CR)“You say that I am.” ⁷¹ Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

Jesus Before Pilate

23 ^(CS)Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. ² And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man ^(CT)misleading our nation and ^(CU)forbidding us to give tribute to ^(CV)Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, ^(CW)a king.” ^3 (CX)And Pilate asked him, ^(CY)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, ^(CZ)“You have said so.” ⁴ Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, ^(DA)“I find no guilt in this man.” ⁵ But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, ^(DB)from Galilee even to this place.”

Jesus Before Herod

⁶ When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. ⁷ And when he learned that he belonged to ^(DC)Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. ⁸ When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, ^(DD)for he had long desired to see him, ^(DE)because he had heard about him, and he was hoping ^(DF)to see some sign done by him. ⁹ So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. ¹⁰ The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. ¹¹ And Herod with his soldiers ^(DG)treated him with contempt and ^(DH)mocked him. Then, ^(DI)arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. ¹² And ^(DJ)Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.

¹³ Pilate then called together the chief priests and ^(DK)the rulers and the people, ¹⁴ and said to them, “You brought me this man ^(DL)as one who was misleading the people. And ^(DM)after examining him before you, behold, I ^(DN)did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. ¹⁵ Neither did Herod, for ^(DO)he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. ^16 (DP)I will therefore punish and release him.”^[i]

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

^18 (DQ)But they all cried out together, ^(DR)“Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”— ¹⁹ a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and ^(DS)for murder. ²⁰ Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus,
