Persecutions Predicted

⁹ ‘But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to local courts,^[a](A) and you will be flogged^(B) in the synagogues.^(C) You will stand before governors and kings^(D) because of me,^(E) as a witness^(F) to them.^(G)

¹¹ So when they arrest you and hand you over, don’t worry beforehand what you will say, but say whatever is given to you at that time, for it isn’t you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

¹¹ Whenever^(A) they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities,^(B) don’t worry^(C) about how you should defend^(D) yourselves or what you should say. ¹² For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said.’^(E)

⁴⁰ After they called in the apostles and had them flogged, they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them.^(A)

¹¹ In all the synagogues I often punished them and tried to make them blaspheme.^(A) Since I was terribly enraged at them, I pursued them even to foreign cities.
