¹⁶ When the scribes^(A) who were Pharisees^[a](B) saw that he was eating^(C) with sinners^(D) and tax collectors,^(E) they asked his disciples, ‘Why does he eat^[b] with tax collectors and sinners? ’

¹⁷ When Jesus heard this, he told them, ‘It is not those who are well who need^(F) a doctor,^(G) but those who are ill.^(H) I didn’t come to call the righteous,^(I) but sinners.’^(J)
