16 och Jakob födde Josef, Marias man. Av henne föddes Jesus, som kallas Kristus.
17 Alltså blir det tillsammans fjorton släktled från Abraham till David, fjorton led från David till fångenskapen i Babylon och från fångenskapen i Babylon till Kristus fjorton led.

18 Med Jesu Kristi födelse gick det till så: hans mor Maria var trolovad[a] med Josef, men innan de hade kommit tillsammans, visade det sig att hon var havande genom den helige Ande.

- Matteus 1:18 trolovad Trolovningen bland judar får inte förväxlas med den nutida förlovningen hos oss. Trolovningen ingicks enligt judisk sed offentligt, inför kvinnans och mannens föräldrar och hade rättslig giltighet. Den var bindande och innebar ingående av ett äktenskap. Äktenskapet fullbordades sedan genom bröllopsfesten och hemförandet av bruden.

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[a]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.(C)
