⁴⁰ For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish^[a](A) for three days and three nights,^(B) so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.

⁴ An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of^[a] Jonah.’^(A) Then he left them and went away.

The Sign of Jonah

²⁹ As the crowds were increasing, he began saying, ‘This generation^(A) is an evil generation.^(B) It demands a sign,^(C) but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.^{[a](D) 30} For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also the Son of Man^(E) will be to this generation.

⁶ So when he heard that he was ill, he stayed two more days in the place where he was.

¹⁴ So Jesus then told them plainly, ‘Lazarus has died.
