20 And the one sown on rocky ground – this is one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy.(A) 21 But he has no root and is short-lived. When distress or persecution(B) comes because of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 Now the one sown among the thorns – this is one who hears the word, but the worries of this age(C) and the deceitfulness[a] of wealth(D) choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.(A) 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth(B) choke the word, making it unfruitful.
