16 The Pharisees and Sadducees approached,^(A) and tested him, asking him to show them a sign from heaven.^(B)

¹¹ The^(A) Pharisees^(B) came and began to argue with him, demanding of him a sign^(C) from heaven^(D) to test^(E) him. ¹² Sighing deeply in his spirit,^(F) he said, ‘Why does this generation^(G) demand a sign? Truly I tell you,^(H) no sign will be given to this generation.’

¹⁶ And others, as a test,^(A) were demanding of him a sign^(B) from heaven.

¹⁸ So the Jews replied to him, ‘What sign will you show us for doing these things? ’

³⁰ ‘What sign, then, are you going to do so that we may see and believe you? ’ they asked. ‘What are you going to perform?
