Jesus’s Lamenting over Jerusalem

³⁷ ‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem,^(A) who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks^[a] under her wings, but you were not willing!^(B)

⁵ The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem^(A) were going out to him, and they were baptised by him in the River Jordan,^(B) confessing^(C) their sins.^(D)

³ He went into all the vicinity of the Jordan,^(A) proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,^(B)

²² If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin.^(A) Now they have no excuse for their sin.

¹⁸ And many who had become believers came confessing and disclosing their practices,
