²³ When Jesus came to the leader’s house, he saw the flute players and a crowd lamenting loudly.^{(A) 24} ‘Leave,’ he said, ‘because the girl is not dead but asleep.’^(B) And they laughed at him. ²⁵ After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up.^{(C) 26} Then news of this spread throughout that whole area.^(D)

³⁵ While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, ‘Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher^(A) any more? ’

³⁶ When Jesus overheard^[a] what was said, he told the synagogue leader, ‘Don’t be afraid.^(B) Only believe.’ ³⁷ He did not let anyone accompany him except Peter,^(C) James,^(D) and John,^(E) James’s brother. ³⁸ They came to the leader’s house, and he saw a commotion – people weeping and wailing loudly. ³⁹ He went in and said to them, ‘Why are you making a commotion and weeping?^(F) The child^(G) is not dead but asleep.’^{(H) 40} They laughed at him, but he put them all outside. He took the child’s father,^(I) mother, and those who were with him, and entered the place where the child was. ⁴¹ Then he took the child^(J) by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha koum’^[b] (which is translated, ‘Little girl, I say to you, get up’^(K)). ⁴² Immediately the girl got up^(L) and began to walk.^(M) (She was twelve years old.) At this they were utterly astounded.^{(N) 43} Then he gave them strict orders that no one should know about this^(O) and told them to give her something to eat.
