⁸ When the crowds saw this, they were awestruck^[a][b] and gave glory^(A) to God, who had given such authority to men.

²⁶ But if we say, “Of human origin,” we’re afraid of the crowd,^(A) because everyone considers John to be a prophet.’^(B)

⁶ But if we say, “Of human origin,” all the people^(A) will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.’^(B)

¹⁹ Then the scribes and the chief priests^(A) looked for a way to get their hands on him^(B) that very hour, because they knew he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.^(C)

² The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death,^(A) because they were afraid of the people.^(B)

²⁶ Then the commander went with the servants and brought them in without force, because they were afraid the people might stone them.^(A)
