⁵ The staff of the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of the Israelites’ complaints that they have been making about you.’

¹⁴ Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen.^(A) Let them deliver you whenever you are oppressed.’

²⁴ Samuel said to all the people, ‘Do you see the one the Lord has chosen?^(A) There is no one like him among the entire population.’

And all the people shouted,^[a] ‘Long live the king! ’^(B)

²¹ David replied to Michal, ‘It was before the Lord who chose me over your father and his whole family to appoint me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel.^(A) I will dance before the Lord,

³² but one tribe will remain his for the sake of my servant David^(A) and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I chose out of all the tribes of Israel.^(B)
