³⁸ Yet he was compassionate;
he atoned for their iniquity
and did not destroy them.
He often turned his anger aside
and did not unleash^[a] all his wrath.^(A)

²³ So he said he would have destroyed them –
if Moses his chosen one
had not stood before him in the breach
to turn his wrath away from destroying them.^(A)
