⁸ That is, it is not the children by physical descent^[a] who are God’s children,^(A) but the children of the promise^(B) are considered to be the offspring.

¹⁶ Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say ‘and to seeds’, as though referring to many, but referring to one, and to your seed,^[a](A) who is Christ.

¹⁵ And so, after waiting patiently, Abraham obtained the promise.

¹⁷ Because God wanted to show his unchangeable purpose even more clearly to the heirs of the promise, he guaranteed it with an oath,^(A)

⁶ But one without this^[a] lineage collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed the one who had the promises.^(A)

⁹ By faith he stayed as a foreigner in the land of promise, living in tents as did Isaac and Jacob, co-heirs of the same promise.^(A)

¹⁷ By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac.^(A) He received the promises and yet he was offering his one and only son,
