7 How beautiful are your sandaled feet, princess!^[a](A)
The curves of your thighs are like jewelry,
the handiwork of a master.
² Your navel is a rounded bowl;
it never lacks mixed wine.
Your belly is a mound of wheat
surrounded by lilies.
³ Your breasts are like two fawns,
twins of a gazelle.^(B)
4 Your neck is like a tower of ivory,^(C)
your eyes like pools in Heshbon
by Bath-rabbim’s gate.
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon
looking toward Damascus.
⁵ Your head crowns you^[b] like Mount Carmel,
the hair of your head like purple cloth—
a king could be held captive^(D) in your tresses.
⁶ How beautiful you are and how pleasant,^(E)
my love, with such delights!
⁷ Your stature is like a palm tree;
your breasts are clusters of fruit.
⁸ I said, “I will climb the palm tree
and take hold of its fruit.”^(F)
May your breasts be like clusters of grapes,
and the fragrance of your breath like apricots.^(G)
9 Your mouth^[c] is like fine wine^(H)—

¹¹ Come, my love,
let’s go to the field;
let’s spend the night among the henna blossoms.^[e]
12 Let’s go early to the vineyards;
let’s see if the vine has budded,
if the blossom has opened,
if the pomegranates are in bloom.^(K)
There I will give you my caresses.
¹³ The mandrakes^(L) give off a fragrance,
and at our doors is every delicacy,
both new and old.
I have treasured them up for you, my love.

8 If only I could treat you like my brother,^[f]
one who nursed at my mother’s breasts,
I would find you in public and kiss you,
and no one would scorn me.
² I would lead you, I would take you,
to the house of my mother^(M) who taught me.^[g]
I would give you spiced wine to drink
from the juice of my pomegranate.
³ May his left hand be under my head,
and his right arm embrace me.^(N)
4 Young women of Jerusalem, I charge you,
do not stir up or awaken love
until the appropriate time.^(O)

¹¹ Solomon owned a vineyard in Baal-hamon.^(X)
He leased the vineyard to tenants.^(Y)
Each was to bring for his fruit
one thousand pieces of silver.^(Z)
12 I have my own vineyard.^[m](AA)
The one thousand are for you, Solomon,
but two hundred for those who take care of its fruits.

⁴ Oh sinful nation,
people weighed down with iniquity,^(AO)
brood of evildoers,^(AP)
depraved children!
They have abandoned^(AQ) the Lord;
they have despised^(AR) the Holy One of Israel;^(AS)
they have turned their backs on him.

⁵ Why do you want more beatings?
Why do you keep on rebelling?
The whole head is hurt,
and the whole heart is sick.
⁶ From the sole of the foot even to the head,^(AT)
no spot is uninjured^(AU)—
wounds, welts, and festering sores
not cleansed, bandaged,
or soothed with oil.

⁷ Your land is desolate,
your cities burned down;^(AV)
foreigners devour your fields
right in front of you—
a desolation, like a place demolished by foreigners.
⁸ Daughter Zion^(AW) is abandoned
like a shelter in a vineyard,
like a shack in a cucumber field,
like a besieged city.
⁹ If the Lord of Armies^(AX)
had not left us a few survivors,^(AY)
we would be like Sodom,
we would resemble Gomorrah.^(AZ)

¹⁰ Hear the word of the Lord,^(BA)
you rulers of Sodom!
Listen to the instruction of our God,
you people of Gomorrah!^(BB)
11 “What are all your sacrifices to me?”
asks the Lord.
“I have had enough of burnt offerings and rams
and the fat of well-fed cattle;
I have no desire for the blood of bulls,
lambs, or male goats.^(BC)
12 When you come to appear before me,
who requires this from you—
this trampling of my courts?
¹³ Stop bringing useless offerings.^(BD)
Your incense is detestable to me.
New Moons and Sabbaths,^(BE)
and the calling of solemn assemblies^(BF)—
I cannot stand iniquity^(BG) with a festival.
¹⁴ I hate your New Moons and prescribed festivals.
They have become a burden to me;
I am tired of putting up with them.
¹⁵ When you spread out your hands in prayer,^(BH)
I will refuse to look at you;
even if you offer countless prayers,
I will not listen.^(BI)
Your hands are covered with blood.^(BJ)

¹⁸ “Come, let’s settle this,”^(BN)
says the Lord.
“Though your sins are scarlet,
they will be as white as snow;^(BO)
though they are crimson red,
they will be like wool.
¹⁹ If you are willing and obedient,
you will eat the good things of the land.^(BP)
20 But if you refuse and rebel,
you will be devoured by the sword.”^(BQ)
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.^(BR)

²¹ The faithful town—
what an adulteress^[s] she has become!
She was once full of justice.
Righteousness once dwelt in her,
but now, murderers!
²² Your silver has become dross to be discarded,
your beer^[t] is diluted with water.
²³ Your rulers are rebels,
friends of thieves.^(BS)
They all love graft
and chase after bribes.^(BT)
They do not defend the rights of the fatherless,
and the widow’s case never comes before them.^(BU)

²⁴ Therefore the Lord God of Armies,
the Mighty One of Israel, declares:
“Ah, I will get even with my foes;
I will take revenge against my enemies.^(BV)
25 I will turn my hand against you^(BW)
and will burn away your dross completely;^[u]
I will remove all your impurities.^(BX)
26 I will restore your judges^(BY) to what they were at first,
and your advisers to what they were at the start.
Afterward you will be called the Righteous City,^(BZ)
a Faithful Town.”

²⁷ Zion will be redeemed by justice,
those who repent, by righteousness.^(CA)
28 At the same time both rebels and sinners will be broken,
and those who abandon the Lord will perish.
²⁹ Indeed, they^[v] will be ashamed of the sacred trees
you desired,^(CB)
and you will be embarrassed because of the garden shrines
you have chosen.^(CC)
30 For you will become like an oak
whose leaves are withered,
and like a garden without water.^(CD)
31 The strong one will become tinder,
and his work a spark;
both will burn together,^(CE)
with no one to extinguish the flames.^(CF)
